Well done on your coverage and mentioning work outside after a good rain and overcast weather is a Huge help! I’ve been Autobody since I was 14 and a Combination collision, frame , restoration, fiberglass and painting from straight enamel, acrylic enamel, bc cc urethane & epoxy. 😂 I m 71 13:19 year’s young no and I’m doing some restoration on my 1987 Marathon cabin cruiser I bought New In Ohio raised all 3 of my kids on it every weekend on Lake Erie . Now it’s on Lake Gaston NC since 2001. Thanks again I’ve been looking around for what’s good in th material Co at this time 👍🇺🇸
Thanks, glad you agree with and enjoyed the awlgrip paint video! I appreciate someone with your experience level commenting and watching the content that we are putting out! It sounds like a great boat, with some sentimental value that you have and I wish you all the best with the work you have planned for her!
I painted small aircraft with Imron for a living. I hit my baby Bertram with Awlgrip back in 2003. The boat sat in the sun since and still buffs up nice. Tough paint.
Boats are boats and who hasn't as a young man thought about sailing around the world in a sailboat. I know I have. I'm a power boater but I enjoyed the video. It's tough spray painting out in the open. I guess you had a portable compressor that could put out enough dry air. Good job!
I agree! This one would make a great boat for someone wanting to do some serious sailing! I am a powerboat guy also, but I can definitely see some really great benefits to this type of boat. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
Fish bump family Awesome job would love to see y'all doing some more family videos with some more boat restoration with the total family like your new project boat y'all take care moving forward
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed seeing the family working together! We will be back on the hardtop and project boat very soon for you all! I really appreciate your support of the channel, it means a lot!
Love the sailboat project. I know nothing about sailboats but man that thing looks cool. I hope we get to see Mark sail that bad boy. That would be a cool video.
Thanks so much, glad you are enjoying the Sailboat at the boatyard videos! I know it is a little different than our usual content, but I am excited to help my brother out! We will for sure get some videos for you when she is all done and under sail! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Thank you for the footage you share with us. That boat is looking awesome. Do you know if I can use that paint on a 37' aluminum house boat? Capt. Joe you are a good teacher and good editor also. I'm addicted to your channel and you helping me to refresh my mind on working on boats. I have three different boats I'm working on now. Please let me know on the paint.
Glad you are enjoying the videos! I have always used awlgrip on fiberglass hulls, but I believe it will also work with aluminum. I have had good success using the awlgrip 545 epoxy primer as your base. I think a quality primer has a lot to do with the overall quality of the paint job. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Looks really nice. Love watching your videos, I’ve learned a ton from them, and have applied a lot of these tips to my own project. I had one quick question for you could you make a video going over what air compressor, as well as gun and settings you use for different spray applications? That would be super helpful.
Thank you , a lot of effort for sure . Look forward to seeing the finishe job . Any polish work to be done after? Will he paint the deck as they always look bad on old boats . Cheers Warren
Glad you enjoyed the video! No polishing planned as the Awlgrip turned out very nice. Yes, my brother will also be painting the topside, but I will not be able to be there for that. I do plan more updates on his Tayana 42 sailboat project though. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great job guys , if id run into a bunch of money . I would get a custom 29 built by you guys. Your boat is the perfect bay boat for the Chesapeake bay where i live fish.
Haha, I hear ya! Man I appreciate that! Don't get me wrong I love our Buskens 29, but those Freemans are awesome for the WAY offshore stuff. Would be nice to have one of each! Thanks so much for your support of the channel, it is much appreciated!
Would you paint rather than re-gel coat if chaging color? I picked up an 87 trawler that previous owners painted bulwarks badly. Was thinking of chemical stripping and re-gel coating. Thanks for any help. Great videos by the way. Also, why would you not use a 2 gal. Pressure pot to paint something that large? Are you old enough to remember Ernie Lee, the old weatherman from the 70's? His tag after the weather was, get out there and go fishing, cause it's good fur ya.. good times.
Most people use awlgrip paint on larger boats in our area. Other 2 part paint systems can also work well. You can use gelcoat, but it can be labor intensive if you want it to be a glossy finish. I will be making some gelcoat option related videos soon, so stay tuned!
Looks nice. Any prep between coats? Any polishing afterward? I'd like to know more about the difference between alwgrip and awlcraft and when it's better than gelcoat or epoxy? I'm looking forward to your hardtop build. I have a catamaran that I want to build a hard bimini for. It also is getting repairs and needs paint so almost everyone of your videos have been about something I need or have coming up. Thanks
Thanks so much, glad you are enjoying the videos! No sanding or prep between coats as long as you keep the process moving along. Basically about 30 minutes between coats. Awlgrip is a 1 to 1 mix ratio, and is very durable, but a little more difficult to work. Awlcraft is 2 to 1 mix ratio and is designed to be buffed out if debris or runs occur in the paint. In our area most people paint rather than regelcoat, especially on large boats. We will have hardtop videos coming soon for you, so stay tuned. I appreciate you watching and best of luck with your boat projects!
Capt Joe Fish bump family by the way y'all need some good sombreros that Sun can put it on y'all it can get pretty strong I'm sure y'all know all to well
The boat yard we were working at has a large on site compressor. But a good 5 to 7.5 hp compressor with a decent size tank will do the job. Thanks for watching!
I have a 80 gal 7.5 hp upright compressor in the shop, but a smaller one could certainly work, especially on smaller jobs. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
So ya "MARK'd" the Mark's on the family unit.... lol, interesting products. You guys still using lead paints aren't you, I mean that's what I thought we used in the early 70's. That's a pretty big job, glad ya'll got some help ! Appreciate the video. peace
Your brother's arm looked tired from here.... my body's too F#@K'd Up to do too much so I know I'd need to hire some help out in that humid heat. Yeah man, all that work is tough & being able to shoot video, then edit things is another skill-set most don't realize. Fun watching & your poor brother is exhausted....lol, did he want you to paint & you said,,, Umm, I've got to shoot the video & it's your boat? I'm messing w/ you guys & I want to see the bottom paint before you drop her in.
Haha, enjoyed your comment! Yep, Mark was pretty whooped by the time we were done! It is definitely a 2 or 3 man job for sure on a boat like that. I did some spraying, but mostly mixing paint and moving scaffolding for Mark. The Tayana is His baby, so he was definitely the lead painter that day! Thanks for watching!
FishBump Bros >> I enjoyed seeing those family dynamics in play.... lol, I was WHooP'd just watching him GiT after it & yeah, that's definitely a 3-4 man job OR a pair of arse-kickin' pro's which I ain't one ! Back in the day I was a one man wrecking crew but I thank you guys for the entertainment w/ a side of education. KUDO's & I'll see ya'll very soon. peace out
Yes Sir! Just like my brother Mark said, 1 gal paint 2 qts converter, 1 qt reducer. 7 qts total value for 2 coats on the hull. Thanks for watching and commenting, it is appreciated!
Do you personally have a preference on paint? If doing a new color on a boat that is currently gel coat would you stick with that or use imron or awlcraft?
On smaller parts, and on smaller boats many people go with gelcoat. Gelcoat requires a lot of sanding and polishing to make it shine after its applied though. For most larger boats in our area, Awlgrip is by far the preferred paint system. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
OG Awlgrip is the most durable paint available, followed by Imron (though the old formula was superior). Awlgrip's downside is that it is a pita to repair/blend. Awlcraft is comparatively soft, BUT it can be easily repaired and buffed, just not as durable. ALWAYS use clear over colorcoat if your are keeping the boat.
I really don't think this conveys the magnitude of this job. This was a lot of work. I have painted enough large signs to know that Mark was worn out afterwards. I don't know how his shoulder held out. It turned out great. Good job.
Yep, it was a lot of work! Mark is tough, no doubt it! I thought it turned out really good, and I am happy to see Mark making good progress on his boat. I appreciate you watching and commenting and am glad you enjoyed the video!
Done a few mostly auto paint stuff in my time. Going out to paint my sailboat. Sure is great to sit down and check out this vid. Always good tips.
Very cool! Glad to help and thanks for watching!

That paint job fantastic
Thank you!
Anyone who loves boats this much has to be alright in my book. Nothing not to love about this channel!
Awesome! Thank you for your comment!
That color is really nice
Thanks, I agree! They call it sky blue.
Thank you for the video. Great job!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
There's a good painter. Mark can lay it down like glass flowing out ahead perfectly of the wet line without hardly looking or slowing down. 👈🐱👍
He is like Ricky Bobby with a spray gun - spider monkey hopped up on mountain dew
Haha, Ricky bobby!! That's awesome! I thought he did a great job, but he was whooped by the time he finished!
Great work Capt Joe and Mark
Thanks so much! Mark sure was happy with how good she looks!
Looks great. And the Stoke is high. You guys really know your stuff and I shows. And you have so much passion for your work.👍
Much appreciated! Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
I painted small aircraft with Imron for a living. I hit my baby Bertram with Awlgrip back in 2003. The boat sat in the sun since and still buffs up nice. Tough paint.
Very cool! Thanks for your thoughts and comments!
Really cool sailboat .. another great episode !
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video!
Yeah, sailboat hull looks great. Nice work. Will love to see the Gulfstar.
Thanks 👍 I will try to get some videos of his Gulfstar project as soon as he is done with his Tayana. I appreciate you watching!
Love what you are doing
Thank you very much!

Wow 32 thousand subs I remember going fishing with you a few years ago it was fun you had around 900 subscribers keep up the amazing work
Awesome! Thank you! Yes, the channel is really started to grow. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Wow instant gloss< impressive work. No bugs flying around there I guess. Looking forward to the hardtop build you mentioned
Thanks! Yes, we had great weather and no bugs that day. We were pretty happy about that! I appreciate you watching and commenting!

Beautiful work
Not a huge sailboat captain
But do love it when you can make any boat look absolutely beautiful
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great work beautiful how that turned out
Thank you very much! Mark was very happy with it!
Love the content keep it coming!
Thanks! Will do! I appreciate you watching

Daum good job skill craftsmen
Thanks so much!
What pressure and tip? Thx, Jon
When your spraying this awlcraft what size tip are you using on the hvlp style guns? Any feedback is much appreciated
We were using a 1.5mm nozzle. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
When is the next upload on the project boat need to see that floor boss man before I replace mine
??? Do you have a video of how the form was made or did you buy it.
Capt Joe Fish bump family by the way y'all need some good sombreros that Sun can put it on y'all it can get pretty strong I'm sure y'all know all to well
I agree! We will be better prepared next time. Thanks for looking out for us!
What type of compressor was used?
The boat yard we were working at has a large on site compressor. But a good 5 to 7.5 hp compressor with a decent size tank will do the job. Thanks for watching!
Great job as always. Could you estimate what the cost was. In the projects you work on? Thanks for another great video.👍👍👍👍👍
What kind of air compressor do you guys use for spraying the Awlcraft? Great work!
There is good air at Barbers but we had to use a good water separater regulator combo.
What size compressor would a DIY guy need to make that paint flow like that? Dual chamber? Minimum CFM? Thx!
I have a 80 gal 7.5 hp upright compressor in the shop, but a smaller one could certainly work, especially on smaller jobs. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

1 gallon did that whole hull? I talked to TB about painting my 36ft and they recommend 3 gallons. That Awegrip looks nice.
1 gallon of paint plus 1/2 gallon converter and 1 Quart of reducer so 1.75 gallons total
Yes Sir! Just like my brother Mark said, 1 gal paint 2 qts converter, 1 qt reducer. 7 qts total value for 2 coats on the hull. Thanks for watching and commenting, it is appreciated!
Is this color Sky Blue?
Yes, I believe so. Thanks for watching!

My brother Mark Buskens can be reached on Facebook if you would like to reach out to him. Thanks for watching

I can't believe they still have arms after all that sanding good googly moogly.
Hahaha, yep! It was a lot of sanding! Thanks for watching!
The Su-34 fighter jet is that color for barnacles.
