I think this is one of my favorite Drumeo lessons yet. I've always loved the brushes yet always felt constrained a bit by the traditional use of them, as Florian pointed out. So I think my favorite part of the lesson is the inspiration to really think outside the box and to revisit these things that tend to collect dust in the stick bag, pull em out and see where I can apply them in a fresh way. Great lesson guys and thank you Florian!!

I love Florian's take on brushes. It's inspiring!!! His approach to 16ths is great for popish/rockish oriented music! Thanks drumeo for the lesson!

+Drumeo My favorite part is the fact that after a long time, we finally get to see a drummer who's not using a large kit with 5+ cymbals and a 22 inch bass drum....Since Peter Erskine.

+Drumeo The most favorable part of the lesson in my eyes was being enlightened on how brushes can still be used in many genres today.

+Drumeo My favorite part is that what else we could actually do with the brushes.......other than playing in jazz. And want to ask that can brushes be helpful in developing finger technique?

  • @jazzhulken

What an amazing lesson! My favorite part was how to "translate" regular grooves with sticks but instead using brushes. Absolute one the best and (for me) most useful lesson on Drumeo!

This is one of the most inspirational lessons that I have seen. Florian is so happy when he plays!! My favorite part is the way he breaks everything down and explains it in an understandable way. I have watched this many times and always pick up a little more each time. Great lesson from a great teacher and performer!!!

I am beginning to teach myself brushes and this video came up and all of the different sounds he was making and doing rudiments. Those books and DVD 'so are just what I need. The fact that you can use brushes for anything on drums that was a favorite part. I love this drummers ideas.

good god! this guy has a super amazing understanding of drumming and playing with brushes…the whole video is fantastic but my favorite part it is watching that ride cymbal wobble on and on and on after it is struck during that first song in the beginning…very very cool lesson and super fun piece in the beginning; very musical use of brushes and a really sweet sounding set-up; that floor tom really growls…AND Florian really kicks ash on those brushes! This lesson left me feeling really re-inspired. Thanks Drumeo for all you do from drummers at all levels and all around the world. I am going to have to watch this over and over and over again to absorb all the in-depth instruction.

i really enjoyed this whole lesson, so much can be explored in the world of brushes. I feel like most drummers only scratch the surface and use the brushes as a low volume or slow tempo advice. it can be so much more! thank you Florian for showing us this world of brush playing!

Wow! Fantastic lesson! Florian communicates his ideas very clearly- what a great teacher! I really like his use of the time pyramid. That alone is going to help me in how I approach my brush work. I have always loved playing with brushes, and always looking at fresh ways to approach using them, this entire lesson is packed with ideas. Thanks drumeo!

Loved the lesson! I love his music choice and how he manipulates the nature of the brushes to make beautiful music! He reminds me of Jeff Hamilton a lot with his clever use of brushes for the most articulate and particular sounds. My favorite part of the lesson was his use of horizontal strokes to create smooth strokes. That's how I was taught to use brushes and I can't seem to find many drummers using that technique today! Awesome lesson!

Really great stuff! Brushes have always been a mistery for me. I've gotten some pointers from some of my previous teachers and I've alsoe bought Florians first book, which is great and I've started to graps the concept. But after all years I've never found one who've explained how to hold the burshes, I mean the grip. That's something I've been messing around with myself and trying to figure out how to hold the brushes to get a great brush sound. Every teacher have always been willing to teach the playing, but non of have talked about the girp which is essential in my oppinon. So to make a long story short, Florian explaned this very good and understanble. That's my biggest take away from this!

I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the video, but I think my favorite part was learning about the origins of using brushes from the use of fly swatters in the early studio. Certainly makes sense, those early acoustic recordings had one huge cone that acted as the mic and every one was placed before it based on volume, the louder players towards the back of the room. Thanks so much for posting this wonderful video!

Am I the only one that prefers brushes to drum sticks or mallets? I love the moderate sound levels and the complex attack, much longer than that of a stick and sharper than that of a mallet. I'm aware that there are Hot Rods that people use, but there is something intriguing about the sonic quality of brushes on skins that is pleasing.
