This is a lesson in not judging a book by its cover. If you saw this guy walking around the rehearsal space, you might see him as the drummer for Marilyn Manson or Foreigner, but who would've guessed that he was a straight-up brush master? So much respect.
The rock look is a haircut and clothes. Many successful rock drummers were into jazz and highschool marching band before they were rockets. Look at Zappa as a teen! 😂
Almost all the early rockers had jazz exposure/knowledge. Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the Hendrix Experience, could swing hard. As could Ian Paice, Deep Purple’s drummer. The Beatles used ‘jazz’ chord structures in their compositions. Charlie Watts had his own jazz big band later in his life. Ultimately, music is music.
Yeah, definitely some of the best brushwork, if not THE best I’ve ever seen. Not only is he musical and technically skillful, he’s very entertaining with the brushes as well - a musician and a performer. Loved this lesson, I’ll be using this stuff for life! Thank you!
Watched this twice - practiced brushes and experimented for an hour and am twice as good as I was - that was an awesome lesson and so Inspiring...Jason Sutter you are a legend
Thank you this is fabelous and creative. I am a new drummer, 62 and loving it. I use brushes a lot becasue the places our band plays have very basic drum sets. Brushes are so versatile... try the nylon ones.. Ive been making my ownout of bits and pieces I have in the shed. My cord tie brushes are heavy duty, they sound very raw...Try the wire brushes on the cojon ..sounds great
Not even a drummer but I've really digging jazzy brush drums lately. Such a fantastic sound. I love learning about the process from masters like this absolute pro.
What an amazing lesson. I love how prepared he was, and I LOVE that he kept it all about sound - every technique and approach was about the sound it produces, and what we can add to the music with brushes. That being said, I would love if you guys brought him back for a follow up to discuss how to expand upon this. Every time I learn the basics of brushes it's enlightening, but I can't quite cross the gap into filling like he does in this video and getting more comfortable adding the flourishes and patterns that make brush playing really exciting without losing the flow. I'd love to get more insight, from him in particular, into how to go beyond the principles discussed here and become a killer brush player.
Hey Jake! Did you check out Benny Grebs "Language Of Drumming"? I just wanted to mention this, because I assume the concepts presented in that Book/DVD might be just what you are looking for. Greb presents a "System" how to come up with good ideas which can be used musically. If you manage to translate that to brushes, I think you will break through that "wall" you described. And anyways, it's a great Drummin DVD, I definetly recommend it! :)
@@MaxMustermann-cj1wk Hey! I actually do have that Book/DVD but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I bought it because I realized I've subconsciously infused Benny Greb's style into my playing (what I can do that is!) and I figured I should study him directly since I love what he does so much. I'm glad you said that his concept could help with my brush playing cause now I have even more reason to dive into that book! Thanks for the suggestion!
@@seeminglymodo Wow isn't that great! Working with his material will definetly pay off, the more the better! No coincidence that you play similar to Greb. It's because we all have the same teacher: Music itself. That's what Greb learned and teaches, it's all about music. Anyway, I wish you great success! I'll get back to practicing those nice Brush patterns :) Greetings from germany!
University of N Texas alumni just amaze me ... they just know how to fit and make things musical.... dude the gig is in 15 min and you have a trash can lid we found 'round back and this old newspaper.... yes one of them can make it happen.... no issues... and smile at the bass player.
Wonderful lesson on brushes. Brushes intimidated me for decades simply because I was ignorant of their capabilities. Now I have different models of wire brushes (yes, there are other materials, but I prefer wire) in various weights and designs which I use according to the size of the venue and the instruments involved. I also have different snare drums with different types of heads for the same reason. I think the snare drums sound so much better with brushes when I don't engage the snares. When I listen to soft jazz, my focus is always on the brushes. My wife gets tired of me saying, "Can you hear the brushes?".
Broh ! What the hell !!??? OMG 😱 wait a second that’s not drumming that’s poetry Jesus Christ !!! This is so beautiful and what a way of starting this MasterClass!!! Jason your a Master of Brushes Woow just the way you played the track there are like 50 brushes lessons right there ! Woow Amazing 😻 work !
Got to meet and hang out with Jason while back in Indy while he was touring with Smash-mouth, he is one of the coolest down to earth humblest guys you'll ever meet. Jason is very approachable and willing to take pictures, talk and hang-out with ya unlike some top notch musicians now-a-days. You ever get a chance to meet him, you'll agree, class A guy.
This is great. I love the reference to Ed Soph. I was fortunate to study with Ed who is a great teacher and a particularly brilliant brush player. Wonderful playing Jason!
There was a period brushes was becoming a lost art! So glad to see really good players using them again; they are a high all their own. Very nice video. I remember Ed Thigpin, Joe Morello, Charlie Percips we’re my favorites.
Wow! Awesome! I can't believe that he's a rock drummer! Perfect technic, with super tone and feeling! It could seem very well, a good drummer can play every type of music. Thanks! It was an incredible experience!
Very well made video! There is a video where Joe Morello shows that basic brush technique in about 20 seconds. Of course Joe is great, but this makes it so much easier to actually get into as a drummer who only used sticks.
46:00 I saw some Steve Gadd brushes the other day in the drum shop. think they were made by Vic firth. They had a bend at the end. This Sutter guy is killer! Great lesson
Drumeo you should really reach out to Jon Hazilla who is a brush master teaching at the Berklee College of Music. His two books Mastering the Art of Brushes are incredible. Thanks again.
AMAZING!!! , not a single cymball, no toms or kick, just talent
No better way to get better playing brushes 😉
Skill*
Wouldn’t have minded him showing what else you could do with brushes but that’s fine
Lots of practice and study*
Just pure skill

He's like a dancer! He moves and feels the beat in such a way that if I close my eyes, I can see the movement! Amazing! 😘
Shut up, you drug addict!
It really is beautiful. Humans can be awesome.
This has to be one of my favorite lessons of all time. Learned so much! Very informative, musical, and just masterful. Bravo!
i know it's pretty off topic but do anybody know of a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
Something so classy and elegant about good brush playing
Watched this twice - practiced brushes and experimented for an hour and am twice as good as I was - that was an awesome lesson and so Inspiring...Jason Sutter you are a legend
What a super lesson! That one can provide complete rhythm with only a snare amazes me!. Not even a kick drum!
He's like a dancer. He moves and flows and expresses the beat so completely that if I close my eyes I can see the movement
WOW!! MESMERIZING!! Best brush playing I've ever seen.

this dude is a beast on brushes. absolutely love!!!!
What an excellent example of a musicianship. His technique is amazing.
Many thanks DrumeO for featuring Mr. Surter and his astounding devotion to this art!

Pick some up. Hope you did!
Jason Sutter, a real soulful craftsman. I feel both your joy & groove. What a great/inspired 53 minutes time spent. Most grateful to/for you!

Been playing for almost 15 years and never had to touch brushes until 2 months ago, amazing lesson, thank you!

Thanks for posting this up Drumeo. So far this is my favorite lesson. I've had the pleasure of studying with Jason and his knowledge is unbelievable.
Getting so many sounds out of that snare....pretty amazing! If you don't watch the video and just listen, sounds like an entire kit is being played
Wow. That's just amazing brush playing. Good as it gets.

Soo good. I’ve watched this video many times. Great teacher. True master. Please get him back again. Maybe brushes with small jazz gig kit.
I’m going to buy a set of his signature brushes. I’ve been stick drumming for 44 years. This guy inspires me to learn brushes. Absolutely amazing!
What amazing technique and texture! Jason is a master of the brushes. Bravo!
This is easily the best instructional video on brushes that I’ve ever seen. Thanks
Incredible. I’ve only taken interest in brush work recently and after watching this lesson I’m determined

This is great. I love the reference to Ed Soph. I was fortunate to study with Ed who is a great teacher and a particularly brilliant brush player. Wonderful playing Jason!

Fantastic!! Beautiful brush player and a very well executed lesson.

There is a video where Joe Morello shows that basic brush technique in about 20 seconds. Of course Joe is great, but this makes it so much easier to actually get into as a drummer who only used sticks.
