When I was 5 or 6 years old, my parents gave me books about Aesop’s fables, Mother Goose stories, Fairy tales, etc., and almost all of those stories had talking animals. I asked my Dad if animals can really talk, and he told me that it was make-believe (which I later labeled Suspended disbelief). I put those books on my make-believe shelf, along with Mickey Mouse, Peter Rabbit, and Winnie the Pooh. One day my Presbyterian grandmother gave me a book of Bible stories for children. In the very first story, I found a talking snake. That book went straight to the make-believe shelf, where it has remained for over 65 years.

My grandmother also contributed to my atheism. She gave me a read-along-record about Hercules and the Hydra, which sparked my interest in Greek mythology. Even in elementary school, I saw similarities between stories in Greek mythology and those in Christianity. And I eventually rejected Christianity in 10th grade.
The funny part was that my grandmother was a minister. The not so funny part was that she very frequently interjected her religious beliefs into mundane interactions, my fear of our relationship degrading if she found out that I was an atheist made me more standoffish, and she died when I was 22. An older, more mature me could've handled it better, and we could've had more good times before she died.

This is why so many religions preach "have faith & just leave it to god" , leaving people to suffer needlessly, instead of trying to fix it..
And it shows a patronizing arrogance of "God said just put up with YOUR suffering, cos I swear I'll pay you back what I owe you, later..

Rodney didn't seem to understand that George Washington having actually existed doesn't mean that the story about him and the cherry tree is true (it isn't true, yet it's exponentially more plausible than Jesus resurrecting from the dead, being a god, being the son of a god, etc)

@1:08:41 - Zack: "If you even just study the human eye..."
Zack, I'd LOVE to talk about the human eye with you. I was born with cataracts - a mass in the lenses of both eyes that prevented me from seeing. Do you know why? Just because.
I later developed glaucoma and lost my left eye. Do you know why? Just because.
After that I had a black spot that kept coming and going so I go to the doctor and they tell me my retina has detached. Do you know why? Just because.
If the eye was designed it was done by a mentally deficient sadist because it's terribly designed. Why didn't God make the human eye more like the octopus eye so we didn't have to worry about cataracts because they have no lens? Why didn't God design us to breath like dolphins so we don't choke to death on the stuff we eat to stay alive?
There's NO WAY this crap was designed.

The chaotic thinker in that particular call, hasn’t studied anything about the various paths that evolution has taken to make eyes, but he somehow reckons that because humans have a certain type of eye, that must mean there had to be only one God making eyes (and absolutely everything else) … because multiple gods couldn’t come up with all these different eye types, flawed or working eyes. 😮

My favorable part of being an atheist is that when you leave your religious morals behind, you also realize that your desire to help & not hurt others still exists inside you. Even without expecting a reward. And you get to re-evaluate your most strident beliefs without worrying about being manipulated by supernatural forces. And personally, I’ve never met an atheist that became a worse person after leaving religion.
As for humans “just being animals by accident,” what a f-king amazing accident! The energy once put towards faith, can now be re-focused towards actual learning. We tend to take science & technology for granted, but imho, science has come so far and has answered so many fundamental questions about how the world works, it’s endlessly fascinating!
We are super lucky to live at a time when science has discovered most of the basics of how the world works! How lucky are we! We have detailed understandings about the universe, our solar system, our planet, our weather systems, evolution & abiogenesis, archeology & paleontology, etc. Questions that only began to be answered in the last 150 years! It’s freaking amazing how much is known about life, that we couldn’t have hoped to have known just a few generations ago. That this could be called some boring accident is astounding to me. Knowing that a sunset or childbirth is “only” a combination of chemicals & physics, is the beginning of a potential lifetime of learning.
That is far more amazing to me then if some giant brain in the sky designed it like a production. That would make humans mere players on God’s stage who will be punished if we question our scripts. “God” as an answer shuts down questions & curiosity. While an accidental “bag of chemicals” can continue to be investigated forever.

Why was Jesus Christ on planet Earth thousands of years ago?
      ANSWER -
      Jesus Christ KNOWS
that the Creator authorized and sent him from heaven to earth to preach and teach the "Kingdom of God" and "Resurrection of the Dead" to imperfect, suffering, and dying human beings
      as written in Luke 4: 43 and John 11: 25, 26
What is the Creator's favor and reward for Followers and Believers of Jesus Christ?
      ANSWER -
      Jesus Christ KNOWS
      that
all persons on earth who willingly submit to his authority and put their faith and hope in his teachings about the "Kingdom of God" and "Resurrection of the Dead" in obedience to what were written in Matthew 28: 18, Luke 4: 43, and John 11: 25, 26
      will
definitely bring themselves honor and the loving, kind, and merciful Creator's favor and reward of ETERNAL LIFE and existence without sufferings, pains, griefs, sickness, and death on a safe, secure, and peaceful earth without liars, slanderers, perverts, traitors, cowards, and murderers as written in Revelation 21: 3, 4, 8.
How will human beings live and exist on earth forever if they just turn into worthless and useless dusts after their deaths?
      ANSWER -
      The Creator KNOWS
      that
all human beings will just become worthless and useless dusts on earth after their deaths just like the animals as written in Ecclesiastes, 3: 19 20 ; 9: 5, 6
      but
he knows too that he will not let his loving, kind, and respectful worshippers who died recently and thousands of years ago like Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Job, Moses, Ruth, Naomi, King David, Daniel, Jesus Christ's followers, and many others to remain as worthless and useless dusts on earth forever,
      instead,
in the right and proper time, and as written in John 11: 25, 26
he will let Jesus Christ RESURRECT them back to life so they can all happily and abundantly live and exist on earth forever as submissive and obedient subjects of the "KINGDOM of GOD" or His Kingdom
and fully enjoy his and his Christ's eternal love, kindness, goodness, generosities, compassions, favors, and blessings for eternity under the loving and kind rulership, guidance, and protection of Jesus Christ as his Chosen King and Ruler of the heavens and the earth as written in Revelation 11: 15.

    • @AudunWangen
      @AudunWangen 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@coletrickle1775I think that's a little reductive. I believe there are intellectual ways to argue for god, but most people are not that smart. Even debates with highly educated and pretty smart religious people don't exhibit that, because they are too invested in giving evidence, ANY evidence. So the good stuff completely drowns in fallacies and bad arguments.
I just watched a video on Alex O'Connor's channel about the argument from motion, which I think has some merits too it. I don't think it proves god's existence, and definitely not the Christian god, but I believe it's an intellectual and worthy endeavor to explore it.

Nikol said that if a person were born with no limbs, they would not be living. They would just be existing. I hope Nikol reads this someday. I lived the first 26 years of my life as a physically fit theist (albeit with little conviction). I have lived the last 36 years of my life as a quadriplegic with no motor or sensory nerve function below my shoulders and I have been atheist most of that time. It has been much more than an existence, Nikol. In fact, I feel confident in saying that you would probably wish that you had lived your life as fully as I have enjoyed living mine.

For example, raffles. There's two outcomes: either I win, or I don't. But that doesn't mean that I have a 50% chance of winning. Your odds of winning in a raffle are [how many tickets you put in] over [how many tickets total are in]. If you bought exactly half the tickets, sure, you'd have 50/50 odds. But if you bought 1 tickets, and there are 1 million tickets sold, your odds of winning are one in a million.

Somedays, I sit back and really think about the fact that shows like this have to exist. The fact that there are real, living, breathing, (somehow) functioning people walking around among us that ACTUALLY believe there is a magic god that created everything, is watching us and is all powerful. They believe they know things about this god because they have their specific book out of hundreds that they are familiar with, and were just lucky enough to be raised with the correct book that details the exact characterization of the correct god(what are the odds? How lucky!). They believe the god not only knows about them, but loves them, cares about them, and wants to punish those who accidently got the wrong book due to geography and the happenstance of being born into the wrong family. And they give money to some of the most powerful people on the planet who claim to speak for the magical god, while they do heinous things to children and communities, and handicap the future of our species and civilization. And the kicker....the majority of the planet believes these crocks of s**t.
It is about to be 2024, and I can't help but reflect on all this yet again. It is hard to keep your sanity living in a world like this where most of the world live their lives based on old fairy tales... Seriously, I feel like the majority of the planet is in the midst of one of those fake IRS telephone scams. You just want to shake them and make their brains work right. But... The good news is, it's on the decline. Not in our lifetime, but hopefully several generations down the line, our ancestors will live in a world free of this nonsense. I am immensely thankful of this show in particular, that has helped me keep my sanity over the past two decades. Keep it up! For my brain's sake lol. To all my atheist brothers, sisters and non-binary siblings out there, we have the truth on our side, and I wish you all a very happy new year. 😊.

Zach's "it's too perfect for there to be multiple gods" is always a little funny to me. Incidentally, I've heard it from other Muslims as well.
They seem to be suggesting that a perfect being wouldn't be able to work as a team with other perfect beings to create this "too perfect" world. Does being perfect somehow preclude one from being a good team player? What a strange idea.

Can something perfect create anything that is not perfect? Wouldn't creating imperfect things make you not perfect?

@joecoolioness6399 whether they could is different from whether they would. I'd imagine people would answer "yes" to the former, and invoke god's mysteriousness or invent some contrivance for the latter. Either way, I haven't seen any good evidence for these claims.

I love your work, but I want to make a small complaint; is it really so hard to equalize everyone's mics? It's much harder to listen to when one or more people are way louder or quieter than the others.

Call number 3 sounds like a stroppy teenager who really needs to grow up.
I really feel JMike’s frustration at the extremely arrogant idiocy on display.

Reminds me of a study some years back over multiple nations from around the world. Confidence vs test results. In this study the U.S. citizens scored themselves highest in confidence levels when it come to math and science abilities. After the actual tests, the U.S. scored dead last.
