It's kind of ironic because Javanese often recognize by their sweet food (e.g gudeg). But when it comes to sambal (chili sauce), they don't hold back lol

    • @twotothehalf3725

But the Javanese sambal doesn't taste that spicy in the standard of the Sumatran people where almost all Sumatran food is spicy, and the sambal from Sumatra is even spicier

actually central java is more to sweet than spicy. sure some of it are spicy as fuck, but most of the culinary in central java are sweet. and then comes east java who actually barbaric enough to say with a poker face that "this isn't spicy, you weak" but the actual food itself is like 100 chilies, and still adding more chili to their food.
i can confirm, as a guy who born in east java, and then go to college at central java, it was a heaven because the food itself ar sweet, not like in east java when the food literally screams "FUCK YOU, IMMA RUIN YOUR BODY" kinda in your face

When I was a kid, I can't even handle normal Indomie chilli powder (it taste like nothing now, even pepper is spicier)
Unfortunately (or actually, fortunately) my dad is from Menado and mom is from Medan, I CAN ONLY EAT HIGH LEVEL OF SPICY FOOD WHEN THERES A FAMILY GATHERING
Finally, around Senior High School, I can finally challenge those spicy foods (but with lots of sweat after eating it)
If you live in Indonesia long enough, you can handle spicy food after some time

I always avoid spicy food as a kid, now I can quite eat it now thanks to my dad who put pepper in any soup dishes he cooks, then leveling up to buying me my favorite bread but with sambel on it, and finally put real chili in my veggies.

I remembered my friend's cousin made one heck of a delicious spicy fried rice. It's horribly spicy to the point where I chugged 2 litres of milk, 5 spoonful of sugar, and 3 spoonful of honey to get rid of the heat. I finished the entire plate because at the time, the only way to make the spice bearable is to keep eating that shit. Once you stop, your mouth, tongue, lips, throat, and your digestive systems are fucked.
