I was there, too! I was the person who asked the first question in the Q and A session. Thank you so much for uploading this; I've been looking everywhere!
I am looking forward to hearing a quality recording of this song. Too much reverb on this cell phone recording but all her work is always excellent. One of the best song writers imo.
Maybe? "Cause I'm conducting an experiment on how it feels to die, or stay alive. Just try to stay calm, cause nobody knows the violent partner you carry around. With claws in your back, ripping your clothes. Listing your failures out loud."
That sounds right! Here are the rest of the lyrics I heard... they definitely aren't right though and some of it doesn't make sense, but: Collecting the circles tell us how old we are beneath our eyelids I'm craving your -- love for myself The vials (?) on my wrists Cause I'm conducting an experiment on how it feels to die or stay alive Just try to stay calm, cause nobody knows the violent partner you carry around with claws in your back, ripping your clothes listing your failures out loud The sullen skeletons next to my coat (?) The black that I keep in the back of my throat calls me straight to the bar The easy way out and the hardest part You won't leave I'm better off learning how to be Living with demons I'd mistaken for saints And keep it between us and I think they're the same I think I can love the sickness you make As I take it all back and change my mind I want you to say ahh... I wanted to say
I think that's pretty close, some parts are tricky to make out exactly. The only difference I hear is after eyelids...I hear something something sleeve but I'm not really sure.
I think it's either, "I'm wearing my heart now, on my sleeve, with the vitals on my wrist," or maybe, "I'm wearing your ______ on my sleeve, with the vitals on my wrist." part of me wants to say that it's, "I'm wearing your hope, Lord, on my sleeve, with the vitals on my wrist." That being said, I have no idea, haha. This is gorgeous though! Also, thanks for taking the time to decipher - and also, thank you Dan, for posting this and filming it. This is beautiful (:
Those lines would make soo much more sense than what I heard the first time round, haha... Hopefully she'll perform this again somewhere else at some point so we can have another shot at the lyrics
It's hard to understand some of what she's singing, but here's my guess at the verse around 1:54 Just try to stay calm 'cause nobody knows The violent partner you carry around The claws in your back, the rip in your clothes Listing your failures out loud I saw your skeletons next to my coat The black that I keep in the back of my throat Call this a strain to us both Whether right or wrong, this sounds like Julien's most beautiful composition yet.
I think it's "The sullen skeletons next to my coat" not "I saw your skeletons next to my coat." With that in mind, I don't think this about smoking. A sullen skeleton next to her coat brings to mind the idiom about having "a skeleton in your closet," which means you have some dark secret or thing from your past that you try to keep hidden and forget about, but it still haunts you. Smoking might be something she struggles with, but it's public enough knowledge that I doubt she would refer to it as a "skeleton in her closet." I think the song is about something much deeper and more personal than that- something that is causing strain in a relationship ("a strain to us both") because it is hard to open up and fully come clean or forget about. I'm not Julien Baker, though, and could be totally wrong. To each their own interpretation, I suppose.
svenskayak No, I think you're right. I look at it more on the base level, but I'm sure there's a much deeper meaning to this song. Especially for Julien. Like you said though, it's up to each persons interpretation. I think you're probably right with the line "Causing a strain" and not "Call this a strain".

It also has a decent recording of "Happy To Be Here".

Now you've said it I'm hearing 'sleeve' as well haha... no idea what the rest of that line is though

I think this is going to be called "claws in your back", on her new album. Or I bloody hope so anyway.
You were right lol

Collect in the circle

Proves what I did
Pump the vitals out my wrist

And it won't leave me alone

Living with demons
I've mistaken for saints
If you keep it between us
I think they're the same
I think I can love a sickness you made
I take it all back
I change my mind
I wanted to stay
I wanted to stay
Thank you very much for this! EDIT: Could you post the source (twitter link) as well if you still have it?
You're welcome! The original poster took their link down though, so I went ahead and set up this new one to share
has she released this as a track yet?
yeah, this eventually became 'Claws in Your Back' on her new album! I'm sure you already know that, I just like pretending to know things
Im irrationally angry at being able to hear people breathe during the song
