Mr. Rucker, I cannot thank you enough for getting involved with this! First, there was a lot of talk on social media that the slop in the travel of this carriage was acceptable. I hope people can see from this video that it was not and it was more than just "play". When I took this piece apart, and it fell apart in my hand, and I saw just how thin those bushings were, this WAS excessive wear. This machine has DEFINITELY been used over time. While I'm sure Leo could have made it work, this repair will certainly streamline his manufacturing of the bolts he needs and help him tremendously. Also, on the two rails/rods, if you look on the end that doesn't have the threads, one has a hole, the other one should be marked with the letter F, for front. The front would be the piece you brazed back together. Thanks again! This community of makers never ceases to amaze me in its generosity.
Spoken like a true gentleman, and one who deeply cares about others (no surprise-- your Pink Fireman project is a tremendously noble endeavor. Bless you, sir). Leo's work has, indeed, brought together a fabulous community of makers... which most certainly reflects well on Leo's character and ethic.
@@marshallmoneymaker8322 You're so very welcome, Marshall. But those words weren't just kind: I'm in awe of you and people like you who do similar things. Straight from the heart. I lost my little sister to oral cancer. Less than 2 years from diagnosis to when she was gone. Seemed like a storm. I was reeling-- seriously. I lived with her and helped her teenage daughter through this. We do what we must, don't we? But you... you've gone a hundred steps further than I can. And you suffered three times what I did. One... three... nothing easy about such loss(es). I just don't have what you have. I don't hold myself in contempt for that, but I am in awe of you. Bless you... bless you a thousand times over.
Came here after Leo mentioned he sent this piece for you to repair. I'm glad I did. Yes, I know it's three years old video but I'm going through the whole story of Tally Ho. Lots of nice content in here. You have a new subscriber. 😎
I cannot completely express how much joy this video has bought me today. Two of my favorite craftspeople working together. This ability to create a community based on craft and workmanship is the positive power of social media. Thank you so much kindness and support of this community. Mr Rucker you are a special person.
Keith, I certainly agree with all these others in thanking you for doing such a nice repair for Leo. I think you'll probably find that this kind of favor is its own reward, but also that you will be paid back many times over for your generosity. Happy to subscribe!
It is wonderful you are helping Leo with this repair. He was proud to get the pipe threader and I am sure disappointed by the broken part. He will really be able to use the machine after the repair. Thank you for helping him.
Leo absolutely is the best guy I’ve seen on u tube building a boat very skilled indeed followed him from the very beginning of the tally ho rebuild so glad you have the opportunity to help,,,,respect
Dear John Mc Dyer 👍👌👏 I couldn't have said it better, Sir! I'm addicted to Lep Gooldens channel. Nearly unbeliiiievable what enormous project he handles and what he is able to do. Extremely skilled/gifted person, additionally with decency. It's very nice that Mr. Rucker is helping him. Mr. Moneymaker is a really great guy too. Best regards, luck, health and wisdom.
Whilst most of TH-cam is filled with angst-ridden, attention-seeking teens and the cat video-obsessed, the collaboration between two craftsmen to create and restore is inspiring......thank you!
I’m another Sampson Boat fan that watched your video. To show my appreciation for helping the Tally Ho restoration project I watched your video with the intention of helping you get every possible reward you tube can give you. I “Liked” and “Subscribed” to your channel. I watched every ad to completion (no “skip ad”) and of course I let your video run to the very end. Thank you for helping Leo!
Keith, Thanks for helpiing Leo with his project. The Tally Ho is a massive project for anyone to take on and he's doing it by himself on what I suspect is aa quite small budget.
While there are a bunch of great machinists on youtube. I think your the perfect person for this job. The shared interest of keeping history alive certainly helps.
My biggest benefit from this video has been being turned on to Leo and his "eating an elephant" project . He needs and is worthy of all the help he is getting.
Excellent start to a repair for Leo. Great to see that you have made time to do this for him as you have many projects of your own that need to be done.
Replacing a _lot_ of the wood? He's replacing *_almost all_* of the wood! He's managed to repair most of the transom, adding a little bit of new wood to it, and isn't going to paint it so as to show just about the only original part of the Tally Ho. He wanted to use the original ballast keel, but sadly melted it in half trying to refurbish it with some more lead. I've been cheering him on since he went to Georgia to get some seasoned Live Oak for his frames 3 years ago. The young man definitely knows what he's doing and is basically building a new boat from the original plans. I can't wait to see him launch the boat and unfurl the rigging on it's "second maiden voyage". I'm liking and subbing to your channel for this favor that you're doing for him.
Keith, you are amazing. It is a joy to watch craftsmen work to bring back the history and the tools that were used to create the industrial powerhouse America was until the 70's when quality was no longer Job 1, but offshore was. You do a wonderful job of explaining what and why you are doing on the repair or fabrication. God Bless you and keep you safe as you rebuild American ingenuity in a time when a slide rule was when the ruler slid off the work surface !!!
Many thanks for turning me on to Leo and his restoration project. These big projects like the sailboat and your planer and stoker engine make for hours of enjoyment and education.
Absolutely love the community that has bound together the best of the best on TH-cam. I was watching Leo, and a comment mentioned Project Binky. It is delightful. In on of their "Howie Do It" videos they were turning something on a lathe, and sparkes flew. The voice-over says, "I hope Abom isn't watching." They pinned Abom's "Oh I'm watching," comment. Abom79 is the first channel I became a patron on. This community spirit is lifting my soul up. It is so real and show the best in us. Marshall Moneymaker (comment below) is spending his life in service to others.
Leo fan here, Keith. I learned a lot from your video. I join many others in thanking you for helping Leo. As a result I have subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to learning more!
Yep, another viewer of yours who also follows Leo on Sampson Boat Company. It's cool to see TH-camrs helping each other out. Love your channel, Keith and I'm learning all sorts of things from you. Thank you and keep up the great work!
As an ex marine engineer and boatbuilder I am delighted to find your channel through Leo, looking forward to seeing more now I have subscribed. Excellent work and thank you for helping Leo out.
Keith, thanks a lot for doing this for Leo. I am a 35 year plus captain but not of sail vessels. Been around the world by sea as captain more than once and have been watching Leo work on the "Tally Ho" since the first video. He is brilliant in his way just like you. Fair Winds Leo
Thanks for helping Leo on this repair. Also thanks for walking up through the why and how of your decisions making process while you do that do we understand the correct way to do this. Tally Ho!
Another excellent video and especially interesting to those of who also follow Leo regularly. I've been watching his channel since the very beginning. He is doing an amazing job. Glad you could help him out.
Hey Keith and Leo --- Great to see You both keeping History alive . I know Cheaply Made Crap is the Normal Today , So it is good to see great "Old Time" things preserved . Two Thumbs Up !!!! Steve Cross akaSuperAX
Thank you for being you Keith, such skills, the level of craftsmanship that surround and are involved with Tally Ho is humbling. These men and women are so talented and skilled and it is so beautiful to watch.
This is the first time I have seen your show; thanks to Leo ..........As an old machinist I have ran turret laths and big radial drill press. fun to see these old machines again. Thanks
Keith , it may be worth mentioning to your viewers that anytime they are grinding or sanding paint off old iron , they should check for lead based paint , as it was commonly used on darn near everything back in the day . If the paint is lead based it’s best to remove it with paint stripper so the lead particles don’t become airborne and inhaled .
You know an experienced fitter by the rythem of his hammer, a very fine melody you had there Keith. Thanks for helping Leo out, got yourself a new subscriber.
This is fun! I'm chasing all over TH-cam, tracking down the good people! I went to Leo's channel where I found the wonderful Marshall so I could say, "YAY, MARSHALL!" And now I've found Mr Rucker. I'm a Brit, so I don't know the first thing about cheerleading, but I'll have a go anyway: 'YAY, KEITH!" :-)
I agree with you about brazing is better than welding cast iron. I had a very old vice which had been repaired with braze.I brought my vice into work and one day a coworker broke it, but not where it was repaired before.
Full disclosure, I'm a patreon to Leo. At first it was because of the level of professionalism in boat building. Then his girlfriend showed up. On day I hope to be able to take a day cruise and be served lunch by Helen of Troy. Thanks Keith for helping him out.
What a network. I have watched Leo build that ship from day one, and I have been a fan of your channel for a couple of years. It is so good to see you craftsmen get together, show your crafts to us and help each other. Thank you Keith.
Found your channel from the Sampson Boat company. Thanks for supporting Leo and glad I found you! A lot of content to catch up on! 😁

Those bushings looked like drainage tubing you would find under the sink! That's a lot of wear.
@max nex Thank you for the kind words.
