I've been working for a couple years with the amulet's inverse, the Nood'larb, and can't say it feels good but damn if it doesn't get results
Isn’t is crazy (and evident of extreme depth and quality) that this 12 and a half minute video could (in my estimation) honestly be used as the subject material for video essays from multiple different creators’ points of view regarding their interpretations of it and what it says… which I estimate because I could definitely see you making a fantastic video discussing it (what couldn’t you make a captivating video discussing tho tbh?) but more impressively, I’m now having ideas for a hypothetical video essay discussing it, and I’ve never even made a video essay, lmao!
It’s inspired some fascinating lines of thinking for me regarding alternative medicine/pseudoscience and the ways these things are framed in opposition to evidenced-based medicine (For example: one could view the amulet as the touted “real/holistic” cure to an illness, “as opposed to modern medicine which only treats the symptoms”, sound familiar? It’s a very annoying cliche of health pseudoscience I’d imagine many would recognize).
At the same time, it’s caused me to argue with myself about how it’s sort of presumptuous and arrogant to assume that I know what’s best for someone who may feel hopeless and lacking control, or out of options, and I may be disguising my ego self-stroking as well-meaning opposition to “dangerous pseudoscience.”
Essentially, it’s caused me to think about a tension I’ve never much considered, between the idea that people should do whatever makes them feel best, and shitting on that can be cruel and even counter-productive, and the fact that magical thinking/pseudoscience/the rejection of empiricism leads both to worse outcomes for an individuals mental and physical health and to society.
I think that as a dialogue it does a spectacularly good job of illustrating these ideas and inspiring further thought, in a Platonic kind of way
Forgot to mention, but the exchanges about crystals are another significant part of what inspired this interpretation for me (the friend poses a somewhat good point in response to what Leo says about crystals).

I love how the name of the amulet is just so etymologically unrelated to any of the supposed history surrounding it. Unless maybe Dionysus suggested the name after coming back from whatever the ancient equivalent of a Scottish pub was, then that would just put me right in my place, you know?

i really enjoyed this video! im really digging these story driven videos, i also had the same issue when i was dealing with alot of ptsd, i was afraid to seek help or get better because i thought i wouldn't be myself anymore. but actually taking the steps to help myself made me who i am today, im able to be happy, and even happy for no reason!

There it is. That's exactly why the people who are dicks to people about harmless stuff they like bug me. It's less about the thing itself, and more about the superiority complex people feel the need to flex about it at the expense of other people just living their lives the ways that work best for them.
I do agree to some extent, but as this piece itself suggested (to me at least), I think it’s a nuanced issue, like… people explicitly engaging in magical thinking and making decisions (particularly ethical or other important ones) based upon falsifiable claims that have indeed been empirically falsified (like whatever crystal healing practices have thus far been scientifically evaluated) can definitely just be flat out dangerous to society (see: a lot of alt-health shit, for example anti-vax shit). I do certainly think that there’s a tension between the idea that people should do whatever makes them feel best and is good for their mental health, and the concerns I just mentioned about empiricism and society.
Furthermore, if these types of practices come along with someone being discouraged from seeking medical advice/treatment, or encouraged to distrust evidence based medicine, which they very unfortunately (and definitely sometimes unnecessarily, meaning perhaps this could be separated out as an issue in some cases) do, plenty of the time, the end result can be statistically expected to lead to the person feeling worse mentally on top of suffering worse physical health, due to the most empirically supported treatments yet available not being employed.
However, I could be overcomplicating this, because a simple rule of thumb could basically be “if your mentally ill friend/acquaintance is getting medical treatment, don’t give them shit for whatever other harmless ways they’re trying to help themselves,” but one could I suppose always counter by bringing up the ways many communities centered alternative treatments can often be pipelines into increasingly anti-medicine (and therefore harmful) beliefs. Idk
