Wow 58 years ago ,Wow how times have changed after 58 years ,Lovely iconic documentary ❤️From a time before computers , Technology and all-sorts , Wish I had a time machine to go back to this time ,Dr Richard Beeching(Sounds like a vile piece of work ) had a lot to Answer for with closures like such in this video ,Just a sad time for communities who were back then used the train ,It was the sight of motor cars back then that was the final nail for communities more use to the train back then ❤️🥺Great Colour footage ❤️Born in 1973 ,My Mum and late Dad (1954-2002 ) Would have been Kids in 1964 when The Beatles and The Rolling stones came too ,They would remember these times better than me ❤️❤️❤️❤️Carefree times 🏴🎥
Brilliant piece of film. Brings back my boyhood when the family went from the Midlands to Wick to visit my Grandmother in the 1950's - to mid 1960's. Thank you.
Visited Sutherland in 1961 as a teenager and remember this railway and the then quite modern Type 2 diesel locomotives which hauled all trains passenger and goods. Wonderful that the line somehow has remained open, despite massive road improvements. And of course that business of trains not dividing at Georgemas with Wick passengers having to go to Thurso and then retrace steps
Hi Alan, Excellent video, i also did that train journey back in 1964, it was back in the days when you could get an all line 7 day railrover ticket and go anywhere you like. It has brought back a lot of happy memories for me and reminded me of what an interesting line it was, thankfully as you know the lines to the far north survived the axe and that is a godsend. Thank you for this, the train has changed to a modern DMU, but the line hasn’t been upgraded so it’s still slow going through the Flows and Strath of Kildonan. Also the sidings at Wick have gone.
Whilst working at Clynelish Distillery in Brora I once took the train down to Inverness, around 2002, and it took around a couple of hours. With the new road bridges in place over the various firths the road journey takes just over an hour.
Envied a neighbour,William Miller,who travelled from Gravesend to Wick, visiting family members in 1952.The sense of atmosphere must have been superb.William went on to run Quartet Books and then The English Agency in Tokyo.

Wonderful film, just had a quick look on the internet to if any of the station are still open an some are but The Mound closed in 1960 and some others also. Found a interesting web sight on old maps of England and Scotland from about 1900 showing all the railway line of that time frame , You can fade out the old map and a modern Gogle map comes up and can see where the old lines use to run and showing goods depot, gas works. sidings in to industrial factory,s.
I agree and endorse those comments prior to mine. I thoroughly enjoy these videos from a slower paced, non-techno age. Plus totally absorbing scenery and so much railway interest. Thank you so much for these videos Alan.
The new footbridge over the River Oykell adds little in fact. I stayed at Carbisdale Castle, a Youth Hostel then, in 1968. You could apply for a BR permit to cross the railway bridge by the tracks, which I had done, but trains were so infrequent, there seemed modest risk. Wonderful film, thank you.

Thanks for pointing this out. Discovering correct pronounciations can be almost impossible, as is correcting the audio on uploaded footage. So I'm afraid the incorrect version will have to remain - sorry!
Great film. Having looked at a couple of old copies of the Beeching reports everything north of Inverness would have been closed if his recommendations had been carried out. Correct me if I am wrong.

Several years ago I copied all my 8mm films to Hi8 videotape. This was long before the existance of TH-cam. In recent years I've input from these tapes to one or another video editing system, using which I've added titles and narration. The result of all this made a computer file which was then uploaded to TH-cam.

There is freight on this line. Timber is regularly loaded (on the mainline at night when the last train has departed).

No, you are NOT wrong. In fact much of the rail network of Scotland outside the "Central Belt" was regarded as uneconomic, so listed to be closed.

All my old films so far uploaded (except the one of the Hungarian Children's Railway) were shot on STANDARD 8mm film.

Excellent video transfers of your historic films. What package did you use to enhance the originals.

Your results are very good. I copied my own 8mm to VHS and then copied to DVD and converted to mp4 then uploaded to TH-cam.
