i thought this version was super interesting! i don't speak German at all so some of the particulars were a little lost on me but I know the musical well enough that I could generally follow along. Definitely the most interesting choreography I've seen for Endgame! All of the actors really went for it in this one, I liked that.

Alter... die deutsche Version von Anthem... die hat mich aber völlig aus dem Nichts überrascht und nun sitze ich hier mit Tränen in den Augen. Chapeau! Bravo! BRAVO!

Despite what everyone else is saying about this I'm impressed. The younger generation don't get the 1970s which I do as I was there ;-P It really was that mad. I've seen a lot of Chess productions over the years (and that includes the West End) having had friends in them. The actors / singers in this one are very good; I like the Anatoly very much and Chris Murray always impresses (he can't dance though!).

I'm all for variations on Chess (no pun intended) and I've seen probably 95% of the amateur and professional versions that exist in audio or video. I think the reason so many people panned this version both critically and audience-wise is because it's just full of some bizarre directing choices. The choreography was noted by many to be just off, same with the costuming and the staging. The orchestration was fantastic of course, and the actual vocal talent was fine. I think it was just a mix of pretty much everything else that just felt mashed together and out of harmony. It's quite discordant (not musically, I mean more visually and as a whole package). Very rarely do you get Chess fans to agree that a certain production is rough, and interestingly this version is noted in the media and Chess circles as just being a bizarre version. I love that they went for it though, but that's just my opinion on what so, so many people panned this version. I hope it helps to shed some light on why that may be, but it's just my opinion, so feel free to bin it :-)

@@daveross3642 I wish there were some of the German lyrics somewhere to read-up on. I can pick out a word here or there but I'm really curious to know how the lyrics were translated (and who did it!)

I'm pretty sure this took place from 1966/67 (the Arbiter says 'neunzehn sechs-und-sechzig' in Act I, if my hearing isn't off).

I'm just blown away by how much he chooses to hit rather than take a lower option for (especially considering as he's generally a baritenor)

Wow, this is pretty rough. I'm all for artistic license, but wow. This version was panned by the critics and the audiences pretty much overall and the vocal talent is fine, of course, but the direction, staging, choreography and overall feeling of the show is just bizarre.

Staatsoperette Dresden. Hab ich damals auch live gesehen. Der Sound und die Atmosphäre kommt leider im Video nicht rüber.
