You do realize that GoPro videos like this all distort the image, right? This path has far more room than you assume. Plus, do you really think a transportation planner would put bicycles on a 1-foot wide narrow strip? How arrogant. Please, maybe get your facts straight before making assumptions and drawing false conclusions.
The problem here is simply people too stupid to simply follow the rules. Don't blame the path designers when people are clearly unable to follow pretty simple requirements.
And as a cyclist who has ridden innumerable times with pedestrians on a bike path, only 20 feet away from an EMPTY pedestrian path, it doesn't matter how wide you make it if people can't understand the most basic of guidelines.

Yes - these people shouldn't be standing in the bike lane but your speed leaves you with little opportunity to react to them if they do not jump to the left/right as you expect them to. The pedestrians are of course responsible for where they are standing/walking but you also have a responsibility to recognise how your actions may affect others.

Exactly, he recorded his run 4:30 between start and market, according to google maps that's 1.2 mile... that's 16 mph average speed. If you count how many times he had to brake or nearly stop, he had probably top speeds close to 20 mph, this is way too fast considering the proximity with tons of pedestrians and counter-trafic cyclists.
So, i do agree that there's a problem with the infrastructure and discipline of the pedestrians, but that's way too fast. When i learned to drive a car i was always taught two rules :
      - Keep a margin to accomodate for other people's mistakes
      - Even if you're legally right in a situation, speeding straight into danger won't save you from injuries

That's nonsense. The Brooklyn Bridge layout was changed several times in the past; there have even been railroad tracks on it and there used to be much more room for pedestrians in the past. The 6 car lanes were introduced relatively recently and are easily changed to a layout that allows reasonable space for bicyclists and pedestrians. This could easily have been included in the recent renovation.

This seems pretty dicky to me. If pedestrians share that bridge they have just as much of a right away as you. They are slower, not to mention kids and old people. You should be the one slowing down. The horn is super necessary but you're using just to throw your weight around as if you getting where you want is more important.

    • @YeeLeeHaw

_"You should be the one slowing down"_
If you actually worked for a living and relied on getting from A to B in time you would understand that you can't just slow down for everyone. The issue here is obviously the cars that take up all the space, remove them, making PEV's more attractive by deregulate them, and there will be plenty of space for everybody.

I just purchased a traditional bell a couple weeks ago, and have not used it since, but know that will change Not that I didn’t have ample moments to use it, but I’ve never really had a bell or horn, and was not too frustrated with the few times I could’ve used it. Ironically it is on the bike lanes where the majority of the usage you will get the opportunity to utilize some form of notice to others blockage of where they ought not to be when it is unnecessary of course.
