When I was in high school I remember a more modern version of this. For six weeks in a one hour class we alternated between driving in cars and the simulator because they only had enough cars for half the students, and that was with four students in the car, each getting 15 minutes to drive. For me, the learning was in the cars. In the simulator, bored me would be holding the accelerator to the floor until the instructor in back would notice: "Roachtoasties, you're going 100 in a residential neighborhood!" That was me learning how to drive.

hi, i was always taught to double-de-clutch in the 60s as most vehicles were crash on 1st gear, great days!

I owned a 62 Chevy Truck with a 3 speed on the column and never had to double clutch. But I know a lot of folks did that back then.

    Thought they were tractor simulators!

I've seen this full film. I respect what they were trying to do with this system. It was an idea just a little ahead of its time. I also think it's all kinds if bizarre looking. When I was in high school we had a drunk driving simulator on the computers that we all took as a personal challenge and not a warning. We would compete to get the car to drive as well as possible.

It reminds me of racing video games.

I remember them. In school that was how I had to lean.

We learned on this type of machine in the 70’s. However, we did learn shifting and I do not recall the vehicle sounds. I could hardly wait to drive a real car after just a few classes.

They had these When my aunt was in high school she said she and a few of her friends would deliberately run into the image of the little boy chasing a ball into the street

This is long before 3d Driving Simulators were used

My mom just took me to the DMV, got me my learners permit, and then had me drive home. I then spent the next 3 months regularly going for drives with her until I had mastered the basics of driving.
I honestly don't see what that simulator would accomplish as nothing that the students do affects what they see on the screen.

Not everyone has a mom with car available for regular lessons.

Given they are watching a film, the individual controls cannot do anything. Clearly they get no sensation of turning or braking, so this ""simulator"" is totally useless.

@@sdaiwepm : Far far less people would have a chance of having a go on this expensive looking but totally useless "simulator".

They must have decided these weren't worth the cost and upkeep lol. I don't think they can possibly teach much practical skills anyway
