All these comments hating on Chang baffle me. If he's so bad, remind me again who won the match and the tournament? If Lendl was so much better why didn't he destroy the moonballs? Gee, it is almost like Chang is playing a totally unique style and using the mental side of the game??? Not illegal, and why would it be?
Chang here playing very much like Mats Wilander played Lendl. Keeping the ball in play until Lendl gets frustrated, and mixing it up at times. Wilander could hypnotise Lendl into being passive and having a Brain freeze on the court at times, and Chang did something similar here.
I remember watching this match at home , first two sets went to Lendl , and then Chang fought back like a champ even though he got cramps in his leg muscles, it was a real pleasure watching this, good old days :D
I saw this match live on TV...It was the most incredible match I ever saw up until that point, and it's still the most memorable match I've seen 25 years later I remember another player said about this match "The kid played like a champion and the champion played like a kid"
This "another player" should look at the carreer of Chang & compare it to the carrer of Lendl. What is true is that it seems that Ivan made the mistakes he did during the years 82-84 when he was playing versus Jimmy Connors
I still can't believe Chang came back to win this. Lendl had experience, supreme fitness, and dominance as his edges. Yet somehow, even with severe cramping, this Michael Chang kid came back and beat him. Partial choke job, to be sure. But Chang was amazing in his own right, and proved it wasn't a fluke by winning the whole thing.
dang, i have the same racket as chang's. Never thought it has been around for quite a long time, for 3 decades now. And it's still doing a pretty good job. Still in one piece..Rafa also uses the tactic employed by Chang here on Lendl's backhand. Hitting high topspin to the backhand to elicit a short ball from Lendl then he pounds the ball down the line, making it out of Lendl's reach.
To play an opponent who never misses, you have to do anything yourself and you know you should win easily can be terrible, even such as competitive player as Lendl experiences this here..
Lendl played a brainless match. He seemed to think that if he just pounded away then Chang would collapse. Chang said afterwards that he was amazed Lendl didn't hit drop shots to take advantage of the cramp he was suffering from.
I actually know of a person from my hometown in Mexico who every year used to go to Roland Garros and he had tickets for this match but instead chose to go to a side court and watch the match of a Mexican junio player. The waste of ticket!
Lendl was right: due to an irregularity of the sand's spread, the ball did not bounce as high as it should have right before his forehand. He did not have enough time to adjust his shot, that costed him the point. It was on a (re-)break chance for him and he was in a good position to attack...
Lendl was a legend. Chang played with the heart of a champion. I don't like when the fans rooted against the players. It's so hard to play tennis and focus and when the fans yell in the middle of a point, it feels like an American sport. On a side note, go Lakers Bruins Rams and Dodgers
Michael Chang is definitely worth of Hall of Fame and being called Legend. Here are some reasons that proves it. 1) He won French Open once, the Grand Slam, much more it is THE YOUNGEST achievement in the all time history which has not been eclipsed yet. 2) Some other tennis players with age close to Michael Chang, such as (a) Todd Woodbridge and (b) Mark Woodforde, are also the Tennis Hall of Famer. (a) Then the Grand Slam Single Results of Woodbridge are Wimbledon - Semifinal, French Open - 3R, US Open - 3R, and Australian Open - 4R. (b) Then Mark Woodforde's Grand Slam Single Results are Wimbledon - 4R, French Open - 4R, US Open - 4R, and Australian Open - Semifinal. Michael Chang made his Grand Slam Singles Results as French Open - Champion (at the youngest age of all time even now), US Open - Finalist (2nd), Australian Open - Finalist (2nd), and Wimbledon - Quarterfinal. Then even both Woodforde and Woodbridge are listed in the Hall of Fame, so this is ample reason to list Michael Chang in the list of Hall of Fame for Chang's having better Single Results in the Grand Slam than other 2 I wrote here. 3) In addition, (a) even an Australian Tennis player Patrick Rafter has his Grand Slam Single Results as Australian Open - Semifinal, French Open - Semifinal, Wimbledon - Finalist (2nd), and US Open - Champion. (b) Brazilian Tennis player Gustavo Kuerten is also a hall of famer. He won French Open 3 times, for sure, however Kuerten's highest position he advanced in other Grand Slam are, Wimbledon Quarterfinal, US Open - Quarterfinal and Australian Open - 3R. Then Rafter and Kuerten were both also listed in the Hall of Fame. Michael Chang with French Open Champion Title at the youngest age, also advanced to the Final in US Open and Australian Open while Wimbledon was Quarterfinal. The impact of Chang, Rafter, and Kuerten are almost the same, or maybe Chang is a bit better than even other two written here. 4) Michael Chang was leading the USA to the champion in Davis Cup in 1990 by winning the semi-final and final,, and also was a leading figure of the US squad in World Team Cup in 1993. 5) Chang is one of very few player who won matches with Lendl twice. The win-loss record Chang has with famous players are: vs Connors 12-12, vs Rafter 7-4, vs Ivanisevic 6-4, vs Edberg 9-12, vs Lendl 2-5, vs Matsuoka 3-0, vs Sampras 8-12, and vs Agassi 7-15. So Michael Chang has more wins than losses to some strong rivals, while other strong rivals have more wins than losses than Chang, but on the other hand, nobody or very few players won that many times in his generation in games with Lendl, Edberg, Sampras, and Agassi. Winning two games in Grand Slam from Lendl is miracle. Lendl himself also admitted it's worth of praise. 6) Chang was year-end top 10 (his career high of the world ranking was the 2nd) for 6 consecutive years matched in the decade only by Sampras. 7) His three Indian Wells Masters titles which is known as BNP Paribas Open, had been ATP record for 15 years till it was replaced by Federer. 8) Chang is one of a few players who won titles in ATP tours for 3 decades. 9)So the impact of winning the Grand Slam title at the youngest age of all time which isn't replaced yet, and won-loss record with strong players, continuous and consistent position which had been high, some ATP record etc... are the proof of Michael Chang as a player worth of being Hall of Famer. Grand Slam, Davis Cup, ATP, Olympic, are all important.
Charles Feng but Michael Chang won French Open (Grand Slam) AT THE YOUNGEST AGE OF ALL TIME OF TENNIS HISTORY WHICH IS STILL VALID AS THE RECORD. In addition, Chang is finalist of US Open and Australian Open, while he had most wi in BNP Parbas Open and won title of ATP for 3 decades and led the US Squad to the world champion in Davis Cup in 1990 and World Team up in 1993. Some tennis players with lower achievement than Michael Chang (even win-loss record) are Hall of Famer, so it is NEVER STRANGE and NEVER JOKE that Michael Chang is also a Hall of Famer now, like I commented many times here in this video comments. He is worth of Hall of Fame.
***** Chang is the ALL TIME YOUNGEST CHAMPION of GRAND SLAM, French Open, and he had been reigning as the most win player in ATP tour till the record was replaced by Federer. Some other players such as Patrick Rafter and Connor are also Hall of Famer but they lost more than they won in games with Michael Chang or even, and frequency of champion title such as Grand Slam and ATP are equivalent. So Michel Chang is worth of being Hall of Famer (actually he is) because even Rafter and Connor are Hall of Famer. Michael Chang has been 3 decades continuing winning ATP tour champion, and 7 or 8 years consecutively within the top 10, which is what only Agassi could achieve in the same way. In addition, if you look at the list of the world tallest man officially recognized by Guinness, the top 5 are Asian, X.S.Bao (236.20cm), Sun Mingming (236cm), Zhao Liang (235cm), Yasutaka Okayama (230cm), and Yao Ming (230cm). Especialy Sun Mingming was the world tallet basketball player and Yao Ming was the tallet in NBA and he has title of the top scorer and all tournament team of FIBA Basketball world cup held in Japan and the USA, respectively. If these Asian tall players genuinely start training Tennis, they can beat the current tennis players with height only less than 2m, ad these current professional players will cry like babies with humiliation. About Robert Wadlow and Sultan Kosen, they are tall but they cannot walk and jog without stick. Wadlow died at the age of 20 !! Wadlow and Kosen is tall because they are sick and their height is disease. So they cannot play any sports. But 5 Asians above are tall while their tall height are NOT disease. That's why they can run and play sports. Lendl has said that he was more focused on Wimbledon at this stage of his career, since he’d never won it. Still a great achievement by Chang, considering his age and how much more developed a player he’d be by 1995.
It´s a long way from winning the 4th round to taking the title, though. That being said, I would have loved to see a Lendl-Edberg final at Roland Garros! As for the worst loss of his career, I´m not sure if Lendl would agree. He already had won that tournament three times, so it´s not that he missed a once in a lifetime opportunity. I´m pretty sure some of his Wimbledon losses hurt him more.
Michael Chang won 2 matches of Grand Slam from Lendl. This is great thing. Michael Chang is definitely worth of Hall of Fame and being called Legend. Here are so many reasons that proves it. 1) Michael Chang won the champion title of French Open, the Grand Slam one, then this achievement he accomplished is THE YOUNGEST ACHIEVEMENT in all time history of Grand Slam, which has not been eclipsed yet. 2) Some other Tennis players aged close to Michael Chang, such as (a) Todd Woodbridge and (b) Mark Woodfordes, are also the Hall of Famer. Michael Chang had been consistent, competive, and long continuing payer who is rare type among tennis players. 9) So the impact of CHang's winning the Grand Slam title (Frech Open) at the youngst age of all time which isn't replaced yet, and win-loss record with strong players, continuous and consistent high position for very long time, sme ATP records etc... are the proof that Michael Chang is a ex Tennis player worth of being a Hall of Famer. Grand Slam, Davis Cup, ATP, BNP Parisbas Open, World Team Cup, are all important and Michael Chang made his achivement that deserves being a Hall of Famer.
Kieran Rankie I think the only other player close to Chang’s Defense is Djokovic. His flexibility is what allows him to be so good on the defensive end. Chang I think is the best defender in the history of the sport.
That´s a bit unfair, though. First of all, tennis is played with the mind as much as with the racket and the strings. And second, compared to today´s one-dimensional baseline robots Chang was anything but a pusher. Unlike them, not only did he have plan A, but also plans B, C, D and E - and that´s what won him the match! He also used the whole court, and closed out points at the net frequently. In my opinion, Lendl tried to outlast Chang. He would readily play endless rallies in the first three sets, and in the end that strategy backfired, since he himself got tired, too.
+LendlTennis Den Aufschlag von unten gibt's in Changs Erinnerungen (25 Years after French Open Battle 4R) zu sehen.
i heard him share his testimony at church about it and all he could say, it was Yesu (Jesus) and hence, he does not take credit but gives it all to Him Yesu in Heaven.
But actually, Lendl should have played much shorter shots here at times, to use Changs weak volley. Long shots and short ones. But Lendl has "rubberarm" here.
Becos even a hard topspin backhand ground stroke will be resisted by the slow surface & make Chang easier to stand still to counter punch the ball .. Lendl tried to take the pace off & mix everything to make Chang came up for the sliced ball , as Chang is not strong near the net
Had Lendl won this match (which he should have in 4 sets), he would have won the French Open in 1989, having already won Monte Carlo and Rome that year on clay and the clear favorite for the French. This had to be the most devastating loss of Lendl’s career. Winning the 1989 French would have given him the boost and confidence for the next 2 years of prime left in his career. This match shattered his ego and he had a hard time winning important and close marches after this one. It was sad to see such a great champion and machine crumble in front of our eyes.
@Aron Poh why only 2003-07. Since Wimbledon 2003 only EIGHTH MEN have won Grand Slams. The New Balls Gen (Hewitt, Roddick, Nalbandian) ...The Lost Gen (Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer) and Gen useless (Dimitrov, Nishikori, Raonic) all would have won more slams in other eras. The Next gen are lucky they won't play their prime years alongside the 3 greatest players ever, but the big 3 are still taking slams from even them.
Lendl was weaker version of Federer (both have very steady strong achievements in ATP, but Federer has far better physical and skills. ) Chang was stronger version of Nishikori.
Comparing Chang to Nishikori...a bit racist, don't you think? Just because they're both of Asian background, that doesn't mean they have a lot in common.
Those moon balls really sucked! Cannot imagine how crowd would react to these balls if top atp players today did it. I had my lunch, took a short nap, shaved my beard, and Chang was still pushing.
Johnny Smith U r the one who embarrassed tennis with this stupid comment! Don’t think the today’s top players can win many Wimbledon as they liked against Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Agassi n Sampras etc
It's total luck for Chang in this match. Near the end, with Chang cramping like this, if he had played a relentless attacker like Edberg, every serve would be punished and he would lose badly. For some strange reason Lendl did not attack the weak serve. He was just trying to wear Chang out, but it backfired.
Lendl is such a weak-minded and Chang took advantage of it. I do not believe that Chang used gamesmanship deliberately but cramps and all that definitely disturbed Lendl and could not really focus on the game.
Backhand is a somewhat similar, but their forehands are very different. Lendl has a very compact swing/followthrough whereas Fed hits his forehand with a straight arm.
6:53 point still in play... hit permanent fixture of net cord judge or chair of judge and landed in. or why isn't that in play? if i hit the score card on my match and the ball goes in, it's a good shot.
@@joemarshall4226 Chang said afterwards that he was shocked that Lendl didn't play more dropshots. He felt Lendl had sort of got into this macho mentality that if he kept pounding away, the. Chang would just collapse. Lendl didn't play a very intelligent match at all.
With all the respect for the time, and despite the fact that it is on clay, what a slow tennis... I dont know if these men would made the actual TOP 100...
This is what happens when you don´t mindlessly bash the ball, but play with actually variety. Those guys were able to change pace, and even deliberatley slow the game down, which is something that most top 100 players today are unable to do. These two would give today´s top 10 a good run for their money!
I never saw any other Player playing these amazing "Moonballs" in any other tournaments , also taking the water bottle onto the court , wondering if this is also allowed to do
Madhu Prasad I can smell a sour grape from u! Chang was one of the greatest becoz he was n still the only Asian man origin to win a GS, been to GS finals 3 times n almost reached the world number 1 in a full of star-studded 90s!
+TheMrBennito But you liked chang's style lol.Chang was lucky to have won 1 grandslam.Lendl on the other dominated and won 8 grandslam. His style worked. His style is modern tennis,Power tennis that is dominating today.
Chang was very courageous in ths match. Yet, I am afraid he didn't show a very fair-play attitude at times. For instance, when he served underhand or when he waited for the serve, on the quarter line, so as to bring Lendl to the double-fault.
Shroomyfeelings is asking why there is no youtube available with the end of this match. Lendltennis' answer is that the French tennis union has the copy rights, especiallsy the bits that are so characteris of this match: the under hand serve of Chang for instance. Shroomyfeelings thanks Lendltennis thanks Lendltennis for the answer, and can not believe that for an old match as this copyrights still apply. I am still gutted by the result of this match, I was/am a big Lendl fan, and this hurt really bad. Almost as the 1987 wimbledon final. I felt that Lendl was trying hard to power out Chang, but he succombed to the lob balls with no power, varied with some good groundstrokes from Chang. Also the whole drama of the cramps really annoyed me back in 1989.
Today´s level on the ATP tour is embarrassingly poor. Chang had variety and a good tactical understanding. If plan A didn´t work, he would pull out plans B, C and D. Aprt from maybe the "big 3", nobody today does that.
fundhund62 nope sorry you are wrong. I’ve literally seen junior players who aren’t even top 100 switch up their tactics to win matches. Stupid uneducated comment.
Ok but this trickery lasted like 1 match or so, 7 gs's vs 1. Playing like a 50 yo lady doesnt last too long in big matches.... Both great players still 😄
All these comments hating on Chang baffle me.
This is one of the most memorable, iconic Roland Garros matches of all time, if not THE most.
..of the world..
One of the greatest matches ever
Das Jahrhundertmatch. Für immer und ewig. Werde das nie vergessen.
Michael Chan was 17 years old, his weight was 135 lbs and he played against a tennis icon. Incredible!
I remember watching this match at home , first two sets went to Lendl , and then Chang fought back like a champ even though he got cramps in his leg muscles, it was a real pleasure watching this, good old days :D
I saw this match live on TV...It was the most incredible match I ever saw up until that point, and it's still the most memorable match I've seen 25 years later
I remember another player said about this match "The kid played like a champion and the champion played like a kid"
I saw it also, and it was THE match that made me start to love tennis !
So who was this "other player"? Because it's bullshit. I challenge you to find a kid that can play like Lendl did here. You made this up.
This "another player" should look at the carreer of Chang & compare it to the carrer of Lendl. What is true is that it seems that Ivan made the mistakes he did during the years 82-84 when he was playing versus Jimmy Connors
Lendl - awesome! 94 ATP singles titles and 8 grand slams. Consistency.
Lendl was one of the best ever, and he kept Chang out on the court longer than anyone else what have that day.
Chang playing quite at similar game to how Mats Wilander used to play Lendl, in many ways.
Nadal would not need to, he would put so much pressure on Lendl with his high bounce top spin forehand.
Auch damals was für starke Typen im Tennis. Schau mir di gute alte Zeit gerne an. 😁
Watching this match at home alone n prayed very hard for Chang somehow ..time flies
Der für mich unvergesslichste Tennismomemt aller Zeiten. Chang war ein Kämpfer sondergleichen
To play an opponent who never misses, you have to do anything yourself and you know you should win easily can be terrible, even such as competitive player as Lendl experiences this here..
This is a good example of being totally psyched out. Lendl lost the match in his head here....
It looked to me like Lendl was looking terrible physically too. I think that had plenty to do with it.
Lendl played a brainless match. He seemed to think that if he just pounded away then Chang would collapse. Chang said afterwards that he was amazed Lendl didn't hit drop shots to take advantage of the cramp he was suffering from.
But chang went on to win against a few great opponents. Hence not a fluke.
I actually know of a person from my hometown in Mexico who every year used to go to Roland Garros and he had tickets for this match but instead chose to go to a side court and watch the match of a Mexican junio player. The waste of ticket!
10:25 lendl: it's absurd, this court!
satjiwan LOL
Lendl was right: due to an irregularity of the sand's spread, the ball did not bounce as high as it should have right before his forehand. He did not have enough time to adjust his shot, that costed him the point. It was on a (re-)break chance for him and he was in a good position to attack...
Lendl was a legend. Chang played with the heart of a champion. I don't like when the fans rooted against the players. It's so hard to play tennis and focus and when the fans yell in the middle of a point, it feels like an American sport. On a side note, go Lakers Bruins Rams and Dodgers
Chang: Pure brilliance. How to beat a #1 player whom you cannot out slug. How to deal and use the heat. How to survive.
John v Neu He's won only one grand slam, plus he blew the finals of three others.
Charles Feng
but Michael Chang won French Open (Grand Slam) AT THE YOUNGEST AGE OF ALL TIME OF TENNIS HISTORY WHICH IS STILL VALID AS THE RECORD.
*****
Chang won Grand Slam French Open at the YOUNGEST AGE OF ALL TIME.This achievement is a FACT and nobody can replace it.
*****
Chang is the ALL TIME YOUNGEST CHAMPION of GRAND SLAM, French Open, and he had been reigning as the most win player in ATP tour till the record was replaced by Federer. Lendl has said that he was more focused on Wimbledon at this stage of his career, since he’d never won it.
Still a great achievement by Chang, considering his age and how much more developed a player he’d be by 1995.
Lendl was a perfect tennis-machine!
So what who ever says, he is a living legend,
All the players all the time tried to beat lendl. If they had known that it just needed some moon balls and the sabr 😄
I think Chang did that for two reasons: to give his leg cramps some time to recover and to upset the timing for Lendl.
Best Match ever and I see it...
I so wish someone does this to djokovic in a grand slam final. Would love to watch!
Would never happen he is to head strong
this match was the worst loss of Lendl's career by a considerable margin. He definitely should have picked up his 4th French Open title in '89.
No polyester in Lendl's strings, and no pressure on Chang's second serve.
Give em 98 sq inch rq’s and Luxilon Alu power spring and that racquet speed will yield 10mph extra easily
Luxilon string is significantly lower power than what they were using. Guys hit more spin now, not faster, because of string.
(a) Then the Grand Slam Singles Results of Tood Woodbridge are, Wimbledon - Semifinal, French Open - 3R, US Open - 3R, and Australian Open 4R. (b) Then Mark Woodforde's Grand Slam Single Results are Wimbledon - 4R, French Open - 4R, US Open - 4R, Australian Open - Semifinal. Michael Chang made his Grand Slam Single Results as French Open - Champion ( as the youngst age of all time even now ), US Open - Finalist (2nd), Australian Open - Finalist (2nd), and Wimbledon - Quarterfinal. Then even both Woodbridge and Woodforde are listed at the Hall of Fame, so this is ample reason to list Michael Chang ii the list of Hall of Fame for Chang's having better Single Results in Grand Slam than other 2 I wrote. 3) I addition, (a ) even an Australian Tennis player Patrick Rafter has his Grand Slam Sinlgle Resuts as Austrian Open - Semifinal, French - Open - Semifinal, Wimbledon - Finalist (2nd), and US Open - Champion. (b) Braizilian Tennis player Gustavo Kuerten is also a hall famer. He won French Open 3 times, for sure, however, Kuerten's highest position he advanced in other Grand Slam are , Wimbledon - Quarterfinal, US Open - Quarterfinal, and Australian Open - 3R. Then Rafter and Kuerten were both also listed in the Hall of Fame. Michael Chang with French Open Champion Title at the all time youngest age, also adcanced to the Final in US Open and Australia Open while Wimledon was Quarterfinal. The impact of Chang, Rafter, and Kuerten are amost the same, or maybe Chang is a bit better than even other two written there. 4) Michael Chang was laeding the USA to the champion in Davis Cup in 1990 by winning the semi-final and the final, and also was a leading figure of the US Squad in World Team Cup in 1993. 5) Chang is one of very few player who won matches with Lendl twice, The win-loss record Chang has with famous and strong rivals and players are: vs Connors 12-12, vs Rafter 7-4, vs Ivanisevic 6-4, vs Edberg 9-12, vs Lendl 2-5, vs Matsuoka 3-0, vs Sampras 8-12, and vs Agassi 7-15. So Michael Chang has more wins than losses ro some strong rivals, while other strong rivals have more wins than losses than Chang, but on the other hand, nobody or very few players won that many times in his generation in matches with Lendl, Edberg,Sampras, and Agassi. Winning two matches in Grand Slam from Lendl is miracle. Lendl himself also admitted Chang's wins are worth of praise. 6) Chang was year-end top 10 (his career high of the world ranking was the 2nd) for 6 consecutive years matched in the decade only by Sampras. 7) His three Indian Wells Masters title which is known as BNP Paribas Open, had been ATP record for 15 years till it was replaced by Federer. 8) Chang is one of a few players who won titles in ATP tours in three decades.
Chang has to be the best defender, and fastest player in the history of the sport
The best defender in the sport who only has 1 slam to his name? Djokovic, Nadal and Murray (just to name a few) are all better defenders.
Kieran Rankie I think the only other player close to Chang’s Defense is Djokovic. His flexibility is what allows him to be so good on the defensive end. Chang I think is the best defender in the history of the sport.
On slower courts with slower balls. Chang is faster than all of those guys.
The best defender and fastest player was Bjorn Borg. Chang doesn't even comes close!
😂😂😂😂😂 Chang is overrated wouldent even be top 20 in today’s atp
man, chang`s serve was just like a 4.5 level player.
@Mikhael Grigoryev yes but he didn’t get a high percentage of first serves in at higher speeds. He just wasn’t tall enough.
@@kchuk1965 at 16-17 he did not have his growth spurt, yet
This match demonstrated how unimaginative Lendl was. He is the world no. 1 but he can't handle a pusher...
@@fundhund62 he handled Mats Wilander on several occasions so your comment is absurd.
So, where’s the rest of the match...??

+LendlTennis Den Aufschlag von unten gibt's in Changs Erinnerungen (25 Years after French Open Battle 4R) zu sehen.
Was für ein Spiel war 12jahre alt
lendl was # 1 chang was like 13, in addition, who he had to beat to get there
Lendl was 80s djokovic
How come the whole match here wasn't shown who won by the way Michael Chang.
Does anyone know why Lendl could not beat Chang who was cramping? Even Chang wondered why didn't Lendl go for drop shots.
i heard him share his testimony at church about it and all he could say, it was Yesu (Jesus) and hence, he does not take credit but gives it all to Him Yesu in Heaven.
Michael chang❤
Jsem hrdý, že byl Čech 👍👍👍
Lendl STILL has nightmares😂
my kind of player.. micheal chang
But actually, Lendl should have played much shorter shots here at times, to use Changs weak volley. Long shots and short ones. But Lendl has "rubberarm" here.
Lendl had such great backhand. Why he played so much slice
Becos even a hard topspin backhand ground stroke will be resisted by the slow surface & make Chang easier to stand still to counter punch the ball .. Lendl tried to take the pace off & mix everything to make Chang came up for the sliced ball , as Chang is not strong near the net
las cosas que uno hace con tal de ganar... michael Chang
Consistently losing at Wimbledon in the semi-finals and finals was devastating & psyched Lendl throughout his career !! not this loss..
Chang all the gals we know went gaga over u😘😘😘😘😘
Mais comment Lendl a t'il pu perdre contre Chang ?
It was just unfortunate that Chang had to played in the Sampras and Agassi era; otherwise, he would've won more slams in his career.
Where is the rest of the game???
Lendl was weaker version of Federer (both have very steady strong achievements in ATP, but Federer has far better physical and skills. ) Chang was stronger version of Nishikori.
Comparing Chang to Nishikori...a bit racist, don't you think? Just because they're both of Asian background, that doesn't mean they have a lot in common.
@@MaartenRonteltap Excuse me?
Chang has been coaching Nishikori for over 6 years, smh.
Those moon balls really sucked! Cannot imagine how crowd would react to these balls if top atp players today did it. I had my lunch, took a short nap, shaved my beard, and Chang was still pushing.
Live odds on Chang after two first sets? Let's go back in time and bet our houses, cars and wifes on Chang at two sets down!
quote 1000
If these two played this way today it would be embarrassing. They'd be hammered by today's top players.
Johnny Smith U r the one who embarrassed tennis with this stupid comment! Don’t think the today’s top players can win many Wimbledon as they liked against Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Agassi n Sampras etc
I’m embarrassed to be on the same comment thread as you.
Who has the right to judge whether anyone is better or worse? Don't be judging anyone, not Michael nor Lendl. Can you beat them?
OrangeKou ii
Ridiculous. That means that you can never ever judge anyone if you're not a tennis player, a football player, an actor, a director, an asshole, ...
why isn't the full video anywhere to be found?
It's total luck for Chang in this match. Near the end, with Chang cramping like this, if he had played a relentless attacker like Edberg, every serve would be punished and he would lose badly. For some strange reason Lendl did not attack the weak serve. He was just trying to wear Chang out, but it backfired.
Tom Hoang I have to remember you that he won to Edberg in the final of this tournament so please be informed before talking
Lendl is such a weak-minded and Chang took advantage of it. I do not believe that Chang used gamesmanship deliberately but cramps and all that definitely disturbed Lendl and could not really focus on the game.
He looks like a teenager.
Did Roger Federer learned backhand and forehand from Lendl? It's pretty much similar, strong and accurate.
Il manque la fin !
so chang did to lentl what lentl did to johnmac??? come back from 2 sets down?
LENDL, not LENTL!!!
Lendl should have switched to a bigger racquet after 1987.
Connors switched late.
Federer switched also late.
how about pistol
anyone know the lady from 29:50?
Nikita ! ❤💋
Moonballer beats the baseliner...an old story.
They didn't hit dropshots much back then. this was a match that screamed for dropshots....
They were both about ready to collapse. Chang more so but Lendl was also about done.
This is what happens when you don´t mindlessly bash the ball, but play with actually variety. Those guys were able to change pace, and even deliberatley slow the game down, which is something that most top 100 players today are unable to do. These two would give today´s top 10 a good run for their money!
When you are playing against a wall who also happens to be the #1 player in the world, the best thing to do is to mix things up.
I never saw any other Player playing these amazing "Moonballs" in any other tournaments , also taking the water bottle onto the court , wondering if this is also allowed to do
Pernfors did in the French open final 86, he could not keep the ball in play as well as Chang though. Also Lendl was better than in this match.
I play to win.
SHUZOOOOOO
Chang was just a player,nt the greatest player
Madhu Prasad I can smell a sour grape from u! Chang was one of the greatest becoz he was n still the only Asian man origin to win a GS, been to GS finals 3 times n almost reached the world number 1 in a full of star-studded 90s!
Madhu Prasad he may not have been the greatest but he was consistently in the top 10. That makes him one of the greatest
No one ever said he is the greatest. Not even one of the greatest
Lendl 5-2 Chang, but frankingly speaking, Chang never won Lendl in any set in first 2 sets of their shutdown. Chang is 12 years younger than Lendl!
LOL you make no sense dude

When mens tennis was at its lows
a sheer delight seeing lendl falter. never liked his play and personality
+TheMrBennito But you liked chang's style lol.Chang was lucky to have won 1 grandslam.Lendl on the other dominated and won 8 grandslam. His style worked. His style is modern tennis,Power tennis that is dominating today.
I think it was just ridiculous. Lendl was better and Chang never has been the number one
Most people believe this was the semi finals
Chang was very courageous in ths match. Yet, I am afraid he didn't show a very fair-play attitude at times. For instance, when he served underhand or when he waited for the serve, on the quarter line, so as to bring Lendl to the double-fault.
What is so unfair about it? It's called gamesmanship.
don't speak nor read german, can someone please translate whats going on here? thanks friend!
+Eddy de Boer i remember watching this as a child, and was shouting for Lendl !!
+Rob Callaghan what the hell was up with chang returning those lobs for no reason?
+Rob Callaghan Me too. I'm still pissed off with Chang. :P
+Matt Cowan Chang was heaving cramps. So he lobbed, and lobbed, to slow down play.
Biggest hustle of the century. Tired my ass.
Where is the POWER ???! Why does Lendl wait like 3 sec when hitting the ball that gives mr Chang plenty of time zzz
With moder tennis they would be beaten by the 300th these days.
Huguyguy: with modern tennis? Lendl is the father of modern tennis.
Lendl kicked Agassi's ass several times - and he would easily hang with today's players. Do not underestimate a legend like Ivan lendl.
pasabolas
Ok but this trickery lasted like 1 match or so, 7 gs's vs 1. Playing like a 50 yo lady doesnt last too long in big matches.... Both great players still 😄
The Parisian spectators were idiots
C'mon Ivan! History said you were the best tennis player in the world
Come on boys - acting like it’s scorching out when Chang’s mother is sitting there in a turtleneck and sweater - sooooooft
too bad it was,nt
chang was a fukkin joke man
Men played like Women
Seriously! I just watched Mary Pierce destroy Graf in the 94SF. She would have had a cake walk with these two guys. How boring this match was.
Now Chang helps foreign Asians not American youth tennis
I hated Michael Chang
