what about the danger of breaking your hand in a street fight? I hear when punching with no gloves or even just a hand wraps that the force you produce is very likely to break the bones in your hand?
I completely agree. Boxing and wrestling are the two that I grew up training in. ( Ju jitsu wasn't really known about when I was a kid) Now as an adult my passion is boxing and I train three times per week. However my wrestling knowledge from my early years has saved my ass more than once in a real fight. Be able to do both.
Wrestling is alot better to know for grappling tbh, especially if you also know boxing. When it comes to wrestling vs bjj, wrestling wins most of the time, basically as long as they have a basic understanding to not let them isolate a limb. This is why the UFC is dominated by wrestlers.

I have said for a long time that boxing + a ground game is the complete package. I'd say two years of boxing + a year of BJJ and a year of wrestling. Both have good aspects to them, and you get to choose from each what works for you. Great video as always!

How about kickboxing+wrestling
@@20-albinthomas2 Kicking is actually quite ineffective unless you are extremely skilled at it. It's prone to losing balance, it has longer attack duration, and it is not as precise as your hands. Edit: and wrestling will work 9/10 once your opponent is in the ground just ground and pound then it's over they can't get up
Boxing and high school wrestling are the two that come to my mind to get the fastest edge on mostly anyone in a street fight. I wish I started with these. High school wrestling is so competitive. The intensity in there will develop an explosiveness you need in a fight.
For someone who really doesn't mind hurting you, a lot of wrestling moves will get you hurt. I am a wrestler though. A take down lunge is easily met with a knee, even if you keep your head up. Imo the 'bull rush' is best. If it goes well, you get to spin around behind and bridge them. If it goes badly, they headlock you, and you bridge them.
Also there are no gloves and wraps in the street - your hands are likely to get injured if you hit a larger bone. But boxing is great for distance management, and your confident aura might make them reevaluate their intent.
i feel like boxing will help more than jui jitsu because u can defend urself better against more than one person with boxing

I’ve done BJJ for 4 odd years now and wrestling since I was 14. I personally think in a street fight boxing is the best, not because it’s the most effective but because it can pretty much always be used. BJJ and Wrestling are pretty situational where as, if you have arms, you can use your boxing skills pretty much always
Absolutely
@Tony_Jeffries - Thank you so much for your content. I just wish the schools here in the UK encouraged kids to actually get off their arses and take up something like boxing etc
Boxing is the best for street fight
I love your humble honesty, Tony. I can’t see too many insecure BJJ guys being man enough to admit that Jiu Jitsu has its flaws; or that boxing training is a necessary complement to their own martial art.
Any grappler should know to kick or punch, any brawler should know how to use their opponents weight agaisnt them when up close.
Project much?
I honestly see more insecure and narcissistic boxers who always have to bash other martial arts. Boxing is good but not invincible
This video is a perfect explanation, great job as always!
You make some good points here Tony. I learned Judo, Karate and Kick-Boxing and one of my friends did Wing-Chun kung fu.
The best thing to do if you can is to study several different combat systems and take the best bits from each one. In my opinion, these are...
Boxing/Kung-fu/Kickboxing & Karate - best for striking
Karate - best for blocking (very important in a fight)
Judo, Jujitsu and Wrestling - best for throws/take-downs
BJJ, Judo and Wrestling- best for grappling and groundwork
BJJ and Judo - best for hold-downs, armlocks and strangles.
Taekwondo - useless, unless you like leaving your groin unprotected so that your opponent can kick you in the nuts...🥴
Running away - best for when your opponent pulls a weapon on you. No matter what you see in the movies, there is NO martial art that gives you a statistical advantage against a knife, a club, or a gun.
Remember folks, your life is more important...
why is Karate best for blocking? Im interested, can u explain?
Bruce Lee did with Jeet Kune Do took the best techniques from thev sstems.
I say that BJJ is better than Judo for chokes, holdowns, joint locks, and strangles because, Helio gracie studied Judo to make BJJ, and all Judo submissions are in BJJ, BJJ is just Judo with more Submissions and less focus on throwing. Karate barely blocks, do Boxing or Kickboxing if you want to block, Karate blocks are for redirection, not blocking.
For just a regular person who doesn't necessarily have the time to train multiple styles, I think boxing is probably the most accessible martial art (at least in the west, UK/USA) that will get you reasonably prepared for a fight. A BJJ practitioner might take a couple years to get proficient enough that they should be confident grappling an unknown attacker, and after 6 months a boxer will be able to handle themselves reasonably well in a fight. The only thing that might be better for some people, if that training is available, is Muay Thai, since they have the elbows and knees for tighter fighting, plum clinch for clinching and kicks and checks for the legs. I still think that boxing is going to give the average person the best results in the shortest time.
I definitely agree.Boxing is probably better at distance management, footwork (which i find plodding in M.T.)and definitely defensive head-movement than Muay Thai as well.
But, Muay Thai, i agree, is also good, the leg kicks and knees/elbows, clinching all easy to learn and effective.I would place it just below western boxing and wrestling.Where it lacks, i find, is punching and head movement primarily.
...for this discussion i guess i would have to drop wrestling, because that would be a very steep learning curve...You'd probably have to grow up doing it in order to learn it properly...
@@alaskatoburningmen4549But if you’re drunk, and let’s be honest most street fights involve drinking, then parrying and blocking is gonna be much more reliable than bobbing and weaving. And an average joe with a year of muay thai would beat an average joe with a year of boxing 99 times out of 100 in a street fight.
@@alaskatoburningmen4549true, muay thai is pure offensive violence. it doesnt use as much head movement or defensive techniques as boxing but is more effective offensively imo. you are ready for a striking conflict from any distance as a muay thai guy . be it very close distance (infighting)or mid range or regular punching distance.

Boxing + wrestling or muay thai + judo or bjj are incredible combinations. Train one striking and one grappling martial art. You don't need a black belt or to be an elite competitor to defend yourself against your average attacker or criminal. As for weapons, don't freeze when you see one, move, run and if you can't run better be armed yourself and your chance of survival will skyrocket. Being armed will definitely help against multiple attackers too.
Definitely learn something from all your videos! Thank you!
An excellent video!
Thank you so much!
Boxing way better in a street fight than Jiu jitsu
For real?
I would say Muay Thai and wrestling
If the guy have friends, you can't do nothing with grappling or wrestling. For real
@@ihavetubes even though Muay Thai teaches how to use kicks elbows and knees there’s a chance you can slip and fall but same can be said about boxing but what if you’re wearing jeans in a street fight and not able to kick like you would in shorts
Jocko had it right. Someone wants to strike? run. You've got nothing to prove. If someone grabs on to you? You better know some grappling.
I love boxing, but (as you pointed out) every self defense situation is different. Knowing multiple techniques, to include knife and firarms training, is desirable. Of course situational awareness (head on a swivel) is key to any self defense strategy.
Not necessarily. Being jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none is detrimental in a street fight because you basically have nothing you are good at to neutralize your opponent. All these "self-defense" martial arts out there literally have no practical uses in an actual fight because of the lack of true sparring. You would be better off actually sparring extensively in boxing considering that being swung at is the most common way a street fight begins.
Also, if you are up against knives or weapons, no martial arts can handle that. Knives are extremely difficult to defend, and your first bet should be to run the fuck out of there.
I like how you approached this!
thankyou coach. all of your techniques are perfect keep it up
Best thing for self Defense is staying on your feet. The Muay Thai and kickboxing stances leave you vulnerable to takedowns, and throwing kicks can leave you off balance and vulnerable to takedowns. BJJ is great for 1 on 1 fights with untrained opponents but usually street fights involve multiple attackers. You can have a great guard but if someone else is soccer kicking you in the head or stomping on your face, you’re gonna have a bad time. Boxing and wrestling is the way to go for self Defense, imo.
Muay Thai and kickboxing stances are FAR better against takedowns than a boxing stance. Boxing stance is by far the absolute worst against a guy who's going to try take you down. You will get taken down at will every single time.
And you're wrong about most street fights involving multiple attackers. The vast majority of street fights are between 2 people squaring up. Getting jumped is less common, and regardless of what anyone tells you, boxing doesn't help you there either. The little videos of boxers beating a few guys at once are because those guys were absolute toilet paper. Those same guys would've gotten destroyed by any college wrestler as well. Any one of those boxers from those videos would get destroyed if they weren't fighting some drunk bums lol.
Boxing is good against people that have no clue how to fight, but if you get someone that knows anything, they're going to easily take you down and beat tf out of you.
Wrestling is good in any situation where any other fighting style would be, and then some. As far as getting soccer kicked, you'd have to remain on the ground for that. If you're a decent wrestler you're going to slam them so hard on the concrete that they aren't getting up, and you'll pop off them and back up to your feet before their friends can even close the distance. Just don't sit there and savor the moment lol. I know this because I've literally done it, I got attacked by 3 goofballs and slammed all 3 of them and none of them got a chance to kick me. Also gotta remember if people are on the ground with their feet facing you, you cant kick them in the head unless you run around to the side their head is on. It only takes half a second for a wrestler to pop back to their feet. There's a video on youtube of some wrestler doing pretty much the same thing to 2 guys who came at him.
Don’t forget with Muay Thai they throw knees so last thing you would want to do is go for a take down and run into a knee.
He comes for my waist (or anywhere lower), he’s getting the knee

La mejor intro tony, eres un jefe
Nice video once again. Keep it up.
Also being physically fit is CRUCIAL in your ability to effectively protect yourself and others bc it doesnt matter how much you bench or how big your biceps are if you are too slow and clumsy to hit anything or gas out in a minute
Ideally you could have a physique, posture, and body language that makes you look tough and put together. That would hopefully let you avoid getting in a fight in the first place. Fortunately, combat sports can arguably give you that. Maybe instead of getting into a bar room brawl, you're not even at the bar. Instead, you're at the gym, the library, the track, or at home spending valuable time with family after a hard day's work/studying and a good amount of exercise. (I understand that young folks like to go out and have a good time, there is nothing with that.)
Good honesty Tony.............just what we know to expect from you!😉
This why I like your videos Mr.Jeffries beacuse you just dont go like "YEAH BOXING IS THE BEST!!!" but rather you tell us every angle and perspective.
Good take tbh
Personally I think its about balancing range and threat.
I wish I had some boxing skills because its a great way to neutralise a threat and not get hit.
I would also note that many combat techniques only work if you are against one target.
I am more trained than most because I worked in security, but most techniques, MMA and martial arts ONLY work against ONE target.
I wish I had a boxing game because at least I could stay on my feet, keep my distance and maybe take one or two out..... because I cant wrestle three guys at the same time.
Tony, your tips are great. 👍
Another great video by the great tony 👍
As a black belt in karate, I agree that it is massively overlooked when compared to other martial arts. And there are lots of McDojos which hand out belts like candy. However, if you are serious in karate and train really hard, it may even be more effective than boxing. In karate, there are lots of punches taught such as the jab, cross, hook, uppercut, overhand, hammerfist, backfist, and so on. And a variety of ways to defend from punches and kicks. Karate also has lots of kicks, which can be deadly if executed correctly. Land a really hard spinning tornado kick on an attacker's head, they're probably not messing with you ever again.
Im gonna have to disagree with you I'm afraid to say!
Because i do actually have some insight on how karate compares to boxing.
Im a former boxer myself, having had 44 boxing matches, boxing on and off over the course of 25 years.
Anyway, my old boxing gym (The Cauliflower Ear boxing gym, Birmingham city, UK....unfortunately closed down now)....there was a karate club/dojo/gym.
Many years ago, some of our youngsters had, for some unknown reason, started feuding with some of the kids from the karate club across the road.
It started to become a real problem, causing alot of issues.
So bad in fact that our boxing coach and their sensei actually arranged an inter club sparring session in the hope of settling the matter. Their logic being, once you share a ring with someone you inevitably gain respect for each other.
Obviously no kicking was allowed, big gloves and headguards were also used.
Our kids (boxers) beat the living daylights out of them. A complete wipe out. Even tears im afraid to say.
Also.....there's a reason you don't see karate being used in Mixed martial arts!!
It doesn't really work.
I agree. Both are best. I have taught and competed in Tae Kwon Do for 4 decades. Along the way I trained in boxing and BJJ. The confidence gained from those was very beneficial to my TKD training. Not fearing a wrestling take down or fighting on the ground allowed my hands and feet to free up. I will say though, that to me, high level kicking ability is a huge advantage in a fight. It is also the hardest skill to master.
Nothing stops a fight before it starts like a good mae geri.
I would say a side of the knee kick is not that tough to learn and can end a fight against most opponents.

Just to add boxing is the most practical and accessible legit striking art. Most part of the world you can find a boxing gym in most cities and boxing does not require advanced levels of physical abilities such as flexibility etc.
Boxing is also one of the easier martial arts to learn (mastery is another matter) . Get a 40 year old office guy who never had martial arts training and he will pick up more from boxing than he will in another striking art like taekwando within a short period of time. Same way that BJJ is the lower physical requirement grappling art compared to Judo (sports/kosen) or wrestling or catch wrestling. I am in no way saying BJJ is easy.. all I am saying is that it requires less physical attributes such as explosiveness strength and grind
Boxing does work in a street fight but the problem is boxing does not work all the time

Hey Tony. I believe that boxing is actually great self-defense and I also feel the same way about Brazilian jujitsu. As you and a lot of other people like Geoff Thompson, John Hackleman and other experienced fighters said I also believe in getting the first strike and not letting my opponent have a chance regardless of his style should I have no choice to protect myself or my family. I believe the surprise attack trump's style.
Thanks for the comment Willie
As a Muay Thai fighter, I use mostly boxing first then observe the opponent in the street, then I use my clinch to knee at the right time
Love your teaching and your accent
In my 35 years of being involved in the martial arts (several injuries have made a good number of those years downtime from training, leaving me to study and spend a lot of time exploring different approaches), I've concluded that "self-defense" is more a psychological and behavioral endeavor than a physical one. We of course should continue to train in the arts that have risen to the top in the combat sports world (boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, BJJ), but being ambushed by armed people who are on meth or fentanyl (or both) changes everything. There are some instructors out there who, IMHO, have gotten to the "truth" more than most others. They are, in no particular order, Craig Douglas (ShivWorks), Tony Blauer (the SPEAR System), Marc Denny (the Dog Brothers), Paul Vunak (Progressive Fighting Systems), Richard Dimitri (Senshido), and, yes, Rener Gracie (talk shit about Rener all you want, but the dude's experience with making LEOs significantly better at dealing with armed crazy people in major metropolitan areas cannot be easily dismissed). Stay in the fight!

No matter what, boxing will get you in shape. The training they do and then the actual boxing is super intense and you will have athleticism in the same level of footballers or something else if not greater. Being able to run and be overall fit is super important

Great video. Boxing isn't all, but still essential part of empty handed self defence. Of course you have to add some grappling and weapon tactics, as well as kicks or muay thai to be more complete defender. We do boxing over and over on our Krav Maga gym. Great advices as always. thx.
i would just like to say im not sure how your page normally works but i was able to watch your video uninterrupted by adds. so i watched every secnond of your in video ad.
Its good to be well rounded knowledge of striking and grappling.
Another interesting video Tony... cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it mate, more to come 🥊
Good work teacher !
Thank you! 😃
I've been boxing since the start of this year at home and I'm really enjoying it, sure it might not be the most practical thing in a street fight but its more easier to learn then kickboxing, Muay Thai or Krav Maga, those specific combat sports practice many different things instead of just punching and footwork it could take years to fully learn muay thai or kickboxing but compared to boxing it might take a couple of months maybe a year or two but boxing is more easier to grasp then the others combined with a little wrestling (which I'm also planning on doing) you'll have a bit of an edge if it ever came down to a street fight. But that's just my opinion great video champ👍.
True that even just one punch can hurt someone badly.. Consequently one should only fight if in a genuine, pure self defense situation. Not a grudge or ego fight or a fight over a girl who has not been attacked.
I like your approach here: Good reasons and bad reasons for using boxing in real life situation. Although your list of other "effective" martial arts and systems is really short, but anyway... good video.
Great Help to growup my boxing training ❤❤❤
Glad to hear that! Happy to help 🙏🏻
Tony you ARE a life-saver and a man with lots of guts! There are lots of boxing channels on youtube BUT there is something unique in your channel which other channels don't have 😊👍
As a boxer I can safely say thing that has saved me the most is not boxing but being able to de escalate the situation
I’m a Bjj black belt, and I’ve always used boxing when fighting in the streets
Totally agree with you, Tony. Boxing and BJJ is a knockout 1-2 combo.
Learn multiple fighting tech. from multiple self defense. UFC really helps.👍👍👍
I use boxing mixed with wing chun, it's a good combo because all you need to do is to make sure the enemy is constantly off balance, but really you just need to punch good.
Bruce Lee did with elements of taekwondo mixed in,they were his main martial arts.
Excellent advice. I also do the Lions mane mushroom. I combine it with Cordyceps mushrooms and Ive never felt better.
I trully agree with this video. In the streets, on the ground your opponent can eye poke you or even bite. Also on the ground he can stomp kick you or use soccer kicks.
Thanks!
Judo!! Works so well with boxing when range closes.
I'm A Southpaw your absolutely right Boxing is the Sweet Science your fellow Boxing Training Lad
That 1rst one though 😅😅😅😅
"ISH-ISH!! ..ISH , ISH. !! " X 😅
I've train in boxing, muay thai & BJJ, & I enjoy training in boxing the most. I simply have a lot more fun with it than the other 2 martial arts.
It is the most time tested and pressure tested striking art in existence.
I enjoy how jiu-jitsu gives me complete control over a single opponent. I never feel like I am in danger and feel like I can do whatever I want to opponent. But often you are not dealing with a single opponent. In those cases being able to take take someone out instsntly or at least score quick damage takes priority. So I picked up muay thai to change the scene.
Good advice. I think one at least needs something boxing oriented like boxing (of course), kickboxing or Muay Thai, and then pair that with wrestling, BJJ or Judo.
I've always been pretty good at street fighting. Haven't lost many. But I was young, it was the 90s, and I had to learn. I only trained maybe 6 months boxing and left during sparring due to a bad sparring partner. I just started again maybe 2 months ago. I was always confident I could handle my own, but now I'm positive. Lol
Some people have a gift for this. I have a mate who sounds just like you. No formal training just has a knack for smashing people 😁
This was surprisingly balanced.
Situational awareness or presense of mind, quick physical reactions or reflexes, mental strength or toughness, composure or self-confidence, resourcefulness, the instinct or the will to fight back and defend yourself, knowing when to fight back or when to just run away as fast as you can, avoiding people places and situations that potentially lead to heated altercations or violent encounters, and your martial arts/fighting/self-defense skills and techniques (if you have any or some) which you have spent long periods of time practicing and training, can drastically increase your chances of successfully defending yourself and surviving potentially violent self-defense encounters. Speaking based on my personal experience as a self-defense practitioner.
Also, running is a great martial art for self defense. Works especially well against weapons and multiple opponents.
