Galder, Silenoz, and Shagrath are a deadly trio now, and I think they’ll always write some killer tunes. But Mustis and Vortex really were the essence of this era of the band. Insane.

Mustis has a particular style that is kind of his signature; it is pretty easy to tell just by listening what songs he contributed to. He definitely didn't get due credit. But most of their best songs from the time Mustis was there were written or co-written by him. Progenies, Insight and the Catharsis, The Promised Future Aeons, Kings of the Carnival Creation, etc. I would follow/purchase anything Mustis produced, he is one of my favorite metal musicians.

Dimmu Borgir would be as big of a band as before, if they wouldn't have diminished Mustis' contribution. Now they are falling in obscurity as their albums are way weaker than before.
I love how when vortex starts singing he covered by a bright light that makes you question where this heavenly voice is coming from, then he fades in dramatically. Damn these are good mushrooms!

This is the music that introduced me to black metal in 2012. I remember the first time I've listened. I was buying some game (I believe it was Skyrim) and the salesman was dressing a shirt of In Sorte Diaboli album. I got pretty scared at first, but when I got home the first thing I've done was to search for this "Dimmu Borgir" band, and this was the first video that appeared in youtube's list. When I've heard Shagrath's voice and saw all the strange face paint and spikes, I thought "what the fuck is this sick shit" (I was sixteen and got pretty creeped out). One month later, I was listening norwegian black metal every day.
I discovered it at 11! My primary school teacher was really into metal and he got me into it too. I don't remember how many hours we spent discussing music and exchanging new bands we found, but it was many. Those times were wild.

If you want to listen to Vortex, he has/had a band called lamented souls and also one called ics vortex. Also borknagar but he's not the only singer
ICS Vortex was amazing in this band. Still the only guy vocalist I ever enjoyed doing clean vocals in extreme metal. Can't stand most of the rest. His delivery borders on opera, which fit Dimmu's symphonic black sound perfectly.
+DrewD55 Try Windir with Cosmocrator doing clean vocals, specially the last 4 minutes of the song called "fagning". One of the most epic and beautiful clean vocals in extreme metal, at the height of Vortex for sure.

Early Dimmu Borgir was absolutely beautiful Black Metal. Later Dimmu Borgir was incredibly epic symphonic metal. Modern Dimmu Borgir is basically Ghost with growl vocals.
He slammed his bass into his face at some point after his historic vocal. So into the moment and continued playing. He had to get stitches if I recall.
