Este piano deshaciéndose, perdiéndose en el rio del tiempo. Tan Underground la divina Diamanda que toca el cielo. Gratitud por haberla visto alguna vez en vivo.
I remember seeing DG in '91 or '92. She dedicated this song to her deceased brother. It wasn't this version at all, but twenty-five years later I remember how touchingly/ tenderly she played it. It was the high point of the show....
totally. she sings this from a truly broken, a truly empty place... her world IS empty, and you can feel it.. the sliding effect of the piano adds to the feeling of pulling you under... pulling down. it perfectly captures that feeling when you have lost someone and your world is gone. only Diamanda.. what is 'scary' or 'harsh' about her voice is exactly what makes it so real. pop songs sometimes are missing the true feeling of despair that they are singing of. it *should* make you uncomfortable.
why empty? too much pathetic .. everything comes from the head, and human beings like to go overboard with being pathetic, especially westerners. When you lose someone it is temporary, we on Earth all will lose someone and eventually will die also by ourselves so why making such deep-hole drama? I don't see any profit out of this composition instead of just after sourness and some dark pretentious mode which I didn't want at all.
@@SamuraiSx19you don’t understand this composition because i assume you didn’t watch a family member slowly wither away and die from aids in the 80s. this composition is about her little brother who she lost at a very young age
Diamanda Galas' brilliant performance of "My World is Empty Without You" changes each time she interprets it new on stage. This one is one of the many different forms in which she gives out the same basic idea. She is such a prolific musician...
the "rare piano effects" is flange. same filter she used on the piano playing Dancing in the Dark. flange can be set to whatever individual preset for whatever desired sound. the way she's using it is very fitting.. it sounds as if the music is rotting away, decaying.
I'm a sound engineer: it's a weird reverb / delay with a descending pitch modulated flange on the delayed note that only triggers on certain high notes. Pretty futuristic effect to be using live in 1997, the sort of thing that has only just become more publicly accessible in the last 5 years. Back then it would have been a few mounted effects racks doing this. Diamanda was always ahead of the curve
Saw her in Vancouver a few years back (maybe 2008, not sure), fittingly in a church. Great setting, great concert. Shivers. The whole place was trembling with her voice.
"One must be drunk always. If you would not feel the horrible burden of Time that breaks your shoulders and bows you to the earth, you must intoxicate yourself unceasingly. But with what? With wine, poetry, or with virtue, your choice. But intoxicate yourself." ~ Charles Baudelaire ~ RXA
This is so brilliant, as is every version of this song I've heard her play. Her hyper-literal interpretation makes me wonder how anyone ever thought it would make a good pop song. I love the Supreme's version, though, as well.
Just in case you didn't know, Diamandas Piano playing is almost as good as her 4 octave voice. I just put someone in check for calling Adelle "queen'. I posted this song on her comment.
Yeah, thanx for your komments, i really appreciate it ... This is probably my favorite clip, maby because of the rare psychedelic effect on the piano in the end ;) and yes probably this was the very most touching concert i´ve ever seen !!! love charles
My World Is Empty Without You, babe. My World Is Empty Without You, babe. And as I go my way alone, I find it hard for me to carry on. I need your strength, I need your tender touch I need the love, my dear, I miss so much. My World Is Empty Without You, babe. My World Is Empty Without You, babe. @CharlesGuilty i'll let you IN on a secret, when people type/say really terrible comments about Diamanda, then that means she's accomplished her goal in bothering someone, anyone! (even someone w/ great musical skill & taste even) but honestly, the more irate & irritable people react to her music, The Better =) the mass majority who know of her music though lover to this point of fanaticism that's almost unhealthy
Oh my, I love this arrangement. This is my first time hearing it, and I think it's the saddest version I've ever heard. It gives the lyrics a whole new meaning when sang in her unique way. And how'd she get the slidey sound on the piano? Was that a keyboard?
@halaluani ... well pleasant and unplpeasant is a strictley subjective way of description, since it expresses your own personel feelings ... sure theres enough smoothe brave flat commertial singers out there, so feel free to listen to the ones without edges. instead, if one likes a change a difference, something with an edge ... you might find it here ... for the ones that appreciate more of vairiety. because you can find it all in here voice, also the tender and smoothe parts, just not always
Rener am a little familiar. This is music I respect more than like, John Cage meets Patti Smith. All great but none quiet my cuppa This is powerful stuff tho
@divina6dunia I listened to4 other pieces before this one. I can't say anything better about the other pieces. Imo, I gave it a fair enough chance before commenting. I don't know how you could ever use the word "gorgeous" about this person's voice. This isn't a matter of being flat or sharp; it's about a really unpleasant tonal quality. There are plenty of good singers who do not rely on enhancements and yet still can avoid sounding unpleasant. You get to like her, I get to dislike her.
Despair is an unpleasant emotion. She sings mostly about subjects that are deeply uncomfortable for most people. Mental illness, AIDS, genocides, etc. Why should songs about such subjects have a pleasant timbre?

But Scott the world is a sad place. Adele has a good voice but not a great voice and anyway she sings shlock most of the time.
I think it's more than 4 lmao she's divine.
Amazing intense unica.
Believe it or not she had the same vocal coach as Debbie Harry
She was given a prestigious scholarship as a seventeen year old to play classical piano with some orchestra
