      Shouldn't even wear it in contact with skin. Over time the sweat will activate the copper oxides in the stone and cause issues leading up to toxic shock.
      Edit and disclaimer: as said by Abhiwan, real malachite is toxic, however, @Patrick Adair Designs is using something called TruStone which is a body-safe resin made with minerals and dyes to emulate the look of real semi-precious stones (like malachite). You would be safe to wear the ring he makes here.

      its malachite trustone, they grind up, and reconstitute real malachite, so it's technically real malachite, just processed with additives. think of it like the 23K gold of malachite

  • @UniversLapidaire

    Nice work, but I find it a shame to use fake malachite on gold.

    • @UniversLapidaire
      @UniversLapidaire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @skeletalbirdie Malachite is toxic, but with the proper filtration equipment and working with water, it's not a problem. Malachite dissolves in water but only over the long term. If it stays in water just long enough to work, it does not dissolve. I regularly work with malachite and I have no problem with dissolution. On the other hand I don't work with a lathe as in the video but by hand with wet diamond wheels (no dust).

    • @UniversLapidaire
      @UniversLapidaire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MiMuMo I don't know the proportions of stone and resin, but the aesthetics of this substitute is too different from real malachite for me. We see that it is not 100% natural and as a lapidary I think it's a shame to denature a stone as beautiful as malachite.

    Really wanna experiment with true stone now :D
    Would really love to see a black granite/marble/stone-countertop material ring with a rose-gold inlay and a rose-gold inside :D
    I'm mentally picturing something akin to the Ember ring in terms of design (but obviously with rose gold rather than crushed stone) with the chamfered edges, or even the Frostbite ring with the hammered edges (that would look pretty badass :D of the two I'd love to see the hammered edges in the stone rather than chamfer xD)

      @@piplup10203854 Gold and platinum are hypoallergenic, so I doubt you'd have a reaction. If you're really that sensitive though, you should go with platinum. Gold is too soft to use in jewelry on its own, so its always mixed with copper to create the karats. Most platinum out there is 95% pure platinum because it's harder than gold. It's also heavier. Also, when gold is scratched, it loses a bit of material, but when platinum is scratched, the metal is just displaced. Neither metal can be dissolved in a single acid either. There's a few little facts.
