Depending on the model of washing machine, they are about 15 quid and you can replace them yourself with a little amount of know how. These brushes are forced against the motor with springs, and they make contact with the copper windings on the motor as it spins to deliver electricity to it, however over time the brushes degrade until it cant make contact anymore. Carbon is used because it is a very good cost effective conductor of electricity, but it isnt so hard of a material and abrasive that it will cause damage to the motor. The brushes usually last around 5 years on most machines. Sometimes 3 years if the machine is very heavily used. Too many people waste money and buy a new machine when this happens, which is utterly insane. I hope this information helps 👍🏻
