This is one of the best explanations of compression I've ever seen

Yeah the last part though ….. at the end of the day it’s about what works best for the sound you’re hearing. Tonality is key. Sometimes too much theory can box you.

i just came across this. ok.great stuff. BUT, are you sure of your explanation of the attack time? Is it not the time that the compressor takes to reduce the signal by abt one third (depends on the manufacturer ) of the ratio n threshhold combination? because if you think of an analog compressor, it doesn't do delay, right?

Pls I have a question...now this myt sound stupid but I still need some clearity...according to wat u said the ratio is:ratio of ways going in n wats going out....
Assuming we set a ratio of 4:1...now this means for every 4 db DAT goes above the threshold, 1db should be d output ryt?.....DAT means reducing d signal by 3db ryt?......good
Now my question is wat if d input signal DAT goes above the threshold is not up to 4db, let's say 3db... will d compressor still compress?...if it will,is d reduction still a function of the 4:1 ratio?
I know it stupid but pls don't be offended by the question!!!!

Ratio is pretty much the number by which you divide the signal above threshold. It doesnt matter by how much your signal goes above the treshold, if you have 2:1 ratio, it "divides" it by 2, 4:1 by 4(e.g. 10dB above threshold with 4:1 is reduced to 2,5 and you should see gain reduction of 7,5dB) this means that 1:1 ratio is doing nothing.
