  • A die-cut sticker is cut around the shape of your artwork. A better name would be custom shaped stickers as they can be any shape you want.
If you buy a die-cut sticker it will be cut around your design, through both the sticker and paper layers.
The term die-cut originated from hundreds of years ago when stickers used to be cut using thin strips of sharp metal formed into shapes, known as dies.
Metal dies are expensive & time consuming to make. Therefore manufacturers offered pre-made shapes. If you wanted a custom shape you’d need to pay an extra fee.
Die-cutting is still used today in many industries. But for stickers and labels, we now use advanced tools such as high-speed lasers or digitally controlled knives for all shapes.
This ensures minimal setup costs and fast delivery times.
However, we still call custom-shaped stickers die-cut, because it’s what people are used to.
It’s important to understand that die-cut only refers to how a sticker is cut. It does not refer to the material the sticker is printed on. These stickers can be made in any shape & size you want.
Die-cut stickers are made by printing onto vinyl, then laminating with a clear protective film that improves durability. Special blades or lasers are then used to cut through the vinyl & backing paper layers. The cutting machines are so accurate you can have any shape and size you want.
