I like to call the cards with the "different name from that other IP" cards "Cosplay Cards."
i think with in the alter community they have been referred to as the pop culture frame/style.
So in the films Gandalf opens with "You Cannot Pass!" but after trading a few blows says the "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" and then cracks the bridge sending the Balrog plummeting.
I love watching these because there's nowhere else you can see people so deeply invested in magic blindly opening packs and reacting to cards
Not to mention actually be excited about them! I feel like its super rare to see people genuinely happy about magic, and not complaining every other minute about various things.
The earnest excitement is what keeps me, a lapsed player, coming back for more. 😊

Just so you know Serge, unlike Draft boosters which require some other factor like DFCs to get extra rares, Set boosters have always had a good chance of getting 2+ rares, with the max being 5. The breakdown of possible slots rares can show up in are: 1 guaranteed rare or mythic slot, 2 wildcard slots, 1 foil slot, and the ad slot can have a card from the List which can be rare. Just counting the 2 wildcard slots, your chance of getting at least one extra rare is about 23.4%.

"Alias Reprint" is kind of what I've personally settled on for the generic name for those cards that were first introduced with the Godzilla versions.
This was the first Crack-A-Box that I watched to the end. Good stuff. I hope Serge shows up for one of these again, great host!
I got that Pippin in my prerelease kit. He was *incredible*. I won so many of my matches by making Pippin unblockable as a ringbearer, declaring attacks with him and a ent or soldier, giving that fellow creature protection from creatures, and hitting for 7 unblockable damage per turn.
My prerelease kit actually had several legendary creatures that gave other creatures evasion, it's kind of a theme in this set. The uncommon Eowyn can give first strike or vigilance (or both if they have an equipment!), and that got in a ton of damage too.
When set boosters were announced, they said they would be "themed". I think people missed that note.
I remember specifically that MaRo said that each card would be related thematically to the cards that followed them in some way. Like, a spearman, followed by a lancer.

The "godzilla treatment" is easily replaced by "skins", because that's basically what they are. Pretty videogamey.

So, just finished scrolling through the comments to see if anyone gave them insight on the Nazgul versus Ringwraiths card. Nazgul and the Witch King of Angmar are from the set proper, with the Ringwraiths being from the Jumpstart booster, the cards number is higher than other black cards around the same point of the alphabet.
2:48 I call those the "reskinned cards", like how you can get new skin for your characters in video games i.e. playing as Goku in Fortnite.
I wish all universe's beyond were printed this way even if the card its reskinning doesn't exist like that one 7/2 godzilla, its much easier to keep track of for commander deck building than the set number equivalency.
Great episode! I would call the Legolas + Fight/Punch deck "Trick Arrows" after the Green Arrow's boxing glove arrow!

Around 25 minutes, I'd call that Legolas 'archery-based fighting' deck either "Punch II Bow" or "Boxing Glove Arrows", depending on the reference that felt funnier on a given day.

I like "re-skins" for putting alternate name and art on an existing card. Like putting a new skin on a video game model. Functionally identical with a new look.

I'm sure somebody had already mentioned this, but the commons and the uncommons in set boosters are "connected" - the idea being that for people who just want to build a collection, buying a few set boosters can get you a significant way towards a serviceable deck (or at least give you several cards in the same colors and theme that you can work around).

First time watching your videos this week with the release of the Lord of the Rings. Very fun. I was bummed that I never pulled Bill the Pony.
What a blast from the past! My dad used to have that War of the Ring game and I played with those cards as a little kid! I recognize the art.
There's also a green 'Figure of Destiny' type of card in Khans block, so at least four of them now, not just three.
So, normally I would agree that a longer name is ponderous and you would need a better name for the Godzilla Treatment of older cards.
But as a Godzilla fan, the name is perfect, don't change it.

I feel like the Counter of Kills wll also be brutal in Commander, because they dont say you had to be the one killing...just when a creature dies.
32:35 Burning Inquiry hit like $10 at one point because of hollow one modern decks, but it probably got put on the list because it was low stakes. I believe that it also had a mystery booster foil.
I'd call the mono-green Legolas "punch tribal" EDH deck "the Double Whammy"

Didn't manage to get to a pre release, so I'm mostly just living vicariously through folks for another week. Also, Jordynne rocks!
So, for Serge, the List is a 300 card thing that cycles out like 70 or so each set, where the reprints in it are related to the set itself. Burning Inquiry might have been relevant to one of the previous sets and still hasn't gotten axed yet. The List is... not the best maintained or smartest thing they have done, but it does put reprints out there sometimes that are somewhat good.
My pair of Sword of Feast and Famine from All Will Be One certainly attest to that.
Burning Inquiry also is pretty good and the only 1 mana loot spell left unbanned in Modern. I know, random discard is worse than non-random but you take what you get in certain decks.
@@kevinwestermann1001 I mean that's fair, but I think Serge's complaint was that it was a Common that doesn't seem to have any reason to be there.

Hey serge that food/clue/treasure list gets to play Junk Winder. It's about a million mana (read: 2) and it's a huge idiot that doesn't show up on advanced searches. Seems very good in a deck like the one you're brewing, he and ol' rusty are BFFs

Sometimes, cards are added to The List because they echo a story beat from the set.
I don't recall anyone self-immolating in the Dominaria United story (when Burning Inquiry was added to the list) but I could be wrong; Jaya was there.
The combat tricks in this set are so good, also I now want to make a counters of kills patter commander deck

Yeah, the common/uncommon slots are themed in set boosters. It was designed that way from the start but some sets do it better than others.
I've always called the art swap cards "Godzilla frames".

Kevin Westermann no, Universes Within is specifically cards that are Universes Beyond cards reprinted with an in-universe name and artwork. Those cards have their original versions listed in the collector's info at the bottom of the card. Cards with flavor names have the normal name of the card underneath the title bar, slightly overlapping the artwork.
The major difference in these two concepts is Universes Within are Universes Beyond cards made to fit in Magic's universe, whereas cards with flavor names are usually the reverse; cards that were originally made for magic's universe themed to fit into another universe.
Glad another idea VS. System came up with in the mid aughts has found new life (panorama cards.) RIP VS. System.

The LGS was Legion Games and they used to organize GPs as Legion Events. Legion Supplies makes the sleeves and deckboxes and whatnot. They also run the licensed MTG Pro Shop.
We need to start calling them "retextures", but yes, Godzilla Treatment is probably what they're gonna be stuck as for all time.

Long List of the Ents sounds like a great card for my Changeling tribal Commander deck. Don't even have to put much thought into what types to choose

When it comes to confusing set symbols, I feel like I've seen them confuse Planescape with both Planar Chaos and Conflux before. Understandably they all involve planes getting screwy.

I never heard of Tolkien or heard of Lord of the Rings until college and had not interacted with the IP at all until the Peter Jackson movies. The original trilogy of movies and a couple of the games that came out in the PS2 era, plus Shadows of Mordor/War, is the entirety of my exposure to the LotR universe before this set.
Had a weird childhood growing up in southern IL with limited access to fiction written media, be it comic or fantasy. At the prerelease I felt like I did at the VS. System TCG Web of Spider-Man prerelease in August 2004 when I didn't know who Gwen Stacy was and thought Black Cat had the same serum as Captain America b/c my Spider-Man knowledge was based on the Fox cartoon from the 90's; which is one of the most, if not the most, inaccurate of all the comic book cartoon adaptations in American media history.
