I use wolves as base defense in my solo base, they multiply crazy fast, feeding off deer and wild boar! I had to cut down the pack by about 14 after a while, they were also spreading out far!
As do I. My wolf breeder cranks out wolves, plenty to replenish any lost during a raid. I’ve also spawn proofed most of my main base, leaving a specific area that mobs can spawn during a raid, which makes for much easier defense, so I generally cluster all the wolves around that area.
Nice checklist. I'm really digging the portal hub. Most of the ones I see eat up a lot of real estate, but this one's small footprint makes it super practical. The stairs on the outside is a brilliant idea, and I'm totally stealing it! Upvoted and subbed :)
Thanks! My brother actually built our portal hub (porthub lul). It's based on the medieval tower structure you would see in castles. The circular portal set-up combined with going vertical allowed us to sneak it into a fairly small area. I will warn you though, you have to be careful building the outside stairs structure to prevent falling off when sprinting up it. We had several... unfortunate... incidents prior to building a railing.

Once I wanted to make a safe from stone and with moat around. I've made quite big castle, well positioned on the hill, near swamp and plains biome. Sadly I forgot about building it near river/canal/sea, so I gotta make a new one. I've also made numerous canals to shorten 'sea travel' so having a dock in your base is crucial. Don't make this mistake again guys!
i like this base a lot and i feel like i've seen quite a bit of builds on youtube. this base is not as fancy but it feels nice and still looks nice. it's also very functional

I have my portal hubs underneath the Elder locations, and the double as invincible afk bases. Need to afk and pass some time without worrying about getting raided and defending base? Just travel to invincible, completely enclosed portal hub and set your bone mass timer :)
I was wondering how you keep you port/dock area from being raided or your ship from being attacked. The enemy seems to come around all my defense and enter vis the water or just sits there and attacks my ship.
@nepocrates Is your port sealed off from the rest of your base? In ours, you'll notice we have a wall and a gate at the port entrance. If there is an opening into your base, the enemies will sometimes take a longer path to reach that opening. Ours attack our perimeter because there are no open entrances. I will also add our main base section was built on an island (you can see this on our minimap). That may have provided extra advantages
(1) I started building lots of small bases scattered around the map; then I discovered that the "attack events" get progressively harsher so that I would have to build some kind of defense for each of them. It's a huge workload. I'm going for ditches (= moats) -- mobs in general don't get past them. And now I started to breed wolves. (2) I soon realized you need 2 parallel systems of ways for logistics: the portals for "light" items and roads for "unteleportable" items. roads are too much exposed to raids though....
Yeah attacks can be brutal. This is why I advocate so much for a main base with a port for shipping. It's a generally safe way (for now at least). Making sure you keep gates strong and closed when you aren't using them is critical. Let's you have a strong place to hide if you get attacked
@@captrobgames2223 I followed a suggestion that I learned here in TH-cam of digging a base underneath the Elder's altar. It already resisted EASILY a Troll attack -- it seems that nothing can destroy the altar and I kept the entrance very narrow as a rabbit hole. It has decent space, but nowhere near as giant as yours. Of course for breeding boars and wolves I use other bases.
@@captrobgames2223 In the case of the Elder itself it gets more complicated. Not because of it, who cannot reach you, but because of the extensible branches/tentacles which can harm you even in the rabbit hole as they penetrate easily in the soil. I experienced that...

This was from quite a few months ago, we upgraded significantly afterwards and haven't even had the server running for about 4 months lol. We never had issues with the gate

I’m very new to this game, but I’m loving everything about it, one thing i don’t understand is how to make bigger bases, with such a small workbench radius, do I need to make multiple workbenches, is there a way to make the radius larger? I really don’t get it, rn I’m confined to a little house so I could keep room for my walls and farms.
I’m doing solo, and I just can’t find a good seed I like, that has swamp connections to other biomes and I can’t find a good spot for a permanent base. But this game is awesome and can’t wait to get better at it.
New to valheim here but when you build gates and perimeter defenses do you just keep building a workbench and destroying it as you go or is there a way to increase your building range
You keep building a workbench as you go. We found creative ways to hide them out of sight. You'll want to keep them around so you repair and build new things as you see fit
Sweet. I feel you are lucky that you have a group to play with; Ive only ever played solo. I cant seem to get my friends to try Valheim, I guess they feel the graphics are not to their liking. I did actually join a server just to log in, cut down wood and collect stone, get mushrooms and berries from both the base and dark forest when I first started, but they shut down their server for some reason. If you are still playing and wouldnt mind having someone log in from time to time to fill up your storage (I work at Marvel so dont get the opportunity to do the big stuff anymore :( ) contact me, I know that stuff feels tedious for others but I find it relaxing after a long day of art lol.

The shield is a Silver Shield, craftable once you can mine silver in the Mountains biome. The blue white checker is one of 7 styles you can select at the time of creation
Listen, I tamed 2 star wolves and boars for our base before we killed Eik... the deer boss. I regret nothing and having an escort or 4 of 2 star wolves has been very relaxing.
Building with stone is something that becomes available as you progress a little bit into the game and complete the meadows and black forest biomes and defeat their respective bosses. In order to build with wood, you create a work bench and you can place wood in the area. For stone, you will create a workbench-like building called a "Stonecutter". It operates in the same way, but you can construct stone walls, floors, and archways within the area. To build this, it will cost you 10 wood, 4 stone, and 2 Iron. Iron is found in the dungeons within the swamp biome, the 3rd biome of the game. You will need the Swamp Key from the Black Forest boss, The Elder, to access these dungeons and collect iron. You will discover the building recipe "Stonecutter" once you have touched all three materials. Most likely, once you smelt iron and pick up a bar, you will discover the recipe. The swamp is a very difficult biome for your first playthrough, so beware!
maybe a little too late, but... poison is the big danger in the swamps (blobs, oozes and leeches) take some poison resistance potions (fermenter makes them) to mitigate the poison damage, one lasts for 10 minutes (half a day) mace is great against skeletons and ooze/blobs avoid being in the water, leeches are nasty but can't go into land as always, nights are dangerous (more mobs, and wrath is a night-only mob that spawns on swamps) the yellow plant is turnip, great cooking ingredient (you plant seeds to get turnip, you plant turnip to get seeds)

A super annoying factor to consider is if you become poisoned, and then take the resistance potion, it does NOT lower the poison damage you are suffering, at least as of a month ago. For maximize safety you will need to run it the entire time, or be quick to apply it before being damaged in a fight.

My friend made it. I believe he used the 45 degree diagonal wood pieces and did a single turn rotation for each segment. He found it from a TH-cam video I believe but idk which one

"the game shouldn't feel like a second job, go crazy do a build, make yourself feel at home." *me grinding for 5 hours to get the wood and stone I need for the build （´﹏｀;）
For this reason I recently started using devcommands to spawn basic wood and stone. Much more easier to stay "in the flow" when building. After a certain amount of hours, gathering basic resources might get in the way of fun.
I've stopped building perimeter defense walls as I don't think they're necessary. I build my house of stone over two storeys. The ground floor has no entrance or exit. Instead, I run a staircase from the second floor balcony down to the ground, with an iron gate top and bottom of the staircase. Monsters aren't going to bash through two iron gates within the two minutes or so of a raid event. If it looks like they will, I equip the hammer and just delete the staircase. They drop to the ground and have no way to get up to me. Everything is within the four walls and under roofs, there is nothing outside. For things that absolutely have to be outside (beehives, windmill, crop fields), I wall off a farm area in Plains so that I can grow Barley and Flax as well. That area has stone walls three tiles high with no entrances or exits. Under a roof awning running along one wall I put a portal, a workbench, an artisan table and some storage chests. I have crop fields, beehives and windmill out in the open with no roof but within the walled area. Plains monsters can't see you through the wall so they never think to attack it. At worst, a Deathsquito might buzz over the wall and attack. But they are easy to deal with. If there are like three of them and I feel I can't cope, I just run through the portal.
You can definitely find more efficient ways to beat the game's AI and prevent invasions as well as attacks from random enemies. I think for myself and my friends we really enjoyed the fantasy aspect of building a realistic base with walls where we felt like brave Viking soldiers defending the palisades from outsiders
When you kill a boss, you can hang up their trophy. The first one should go on the stonehenge so you can get their power, but other kills keep giving you more. The boss trophies on your walls will speak to you. Eikthyr says something along the lines of "so you were my death"
hey if you ever need 1 more player i've been looking for a couple of folks to chill with on valheim, im kind of new ish to it, basically ive gotten up to the swamp and have to beat that boss haha.
We actually haven't been on the game in a few months. We are holding out for a major update and will likely return to check out Hearth and Home, and again with later updates. All of our dedicated servers are currently down. I will resume Valheim content creation once a big update drops though!
As someone who hates sailing I use a mod which allows me to craft 3 other portals which allows me to transport more and more ores and ingots, but they are costly in ressources. The mod is called "Advanced Portals" by RandyKnapp. I still build harbors with ships on my bases for visual reasons.

Docks are definitely a must have in this game due to the portal + ore/bars blocking mechanic
Just make docks at ocean shore and link them with road.
don't rebuild your base. build irrigation to it.

put one of each type of furniture next to your bed along with the rugs and fire and you can get the comfort level to 17

Omg your storage area in the crafting terrace, why did I not think of that i.e you can access the chests from each side!! Genius!

For this reason I recently started using devcommands to spawn basic wood and stone. Much more easier to stay "in the flow" when building. After a certain amount of hours, gathering basic resources might get in the way of fun.

My ideal base is what I would have in the real world if I could buy my dream property... solo with zero other people around.
but this is a nice set up that gave me one or two ideas I hadnt thought of yet.
I've stopped building perimeter defense walls as I don't think they're necessary. I build my house of stone over two storeys. The ground floor has no entrance or exit. Instead, I run a staircase from the second floor balcony down to the ground, with an iron gate top and bottom of the staircase. Monsters aren't going to bash through two iron gates within the two minutes or so of a raid event. If it looks like they will, I equip the hammer and just delete the staircase. They drop to the ground and have no way to get up to me.
Everything is within the four walls and under roofs, there is nothing outside. For things that absolutely have to be outside (beehives, windmill, crop fields), I wall off a farm area in Plains so that I can grow Barley and Flax as well. That area has stone walls three tiles high with no entrances or exits. Under a roof awning running along one wall I put a portal, a workbench, an artisan table and some storage chests. I have crop fields, beehives and windmill out in the open with no roof but within the walled area. Plains monsters can't see you through the wall so they never think to attack it. At worst, a Deathsquito might buzz over the wall and attack. But they are easy to deal with. If there are like three of them and I feel I can't cope, I just run through the portal.
You can definitely find more efficient ways to beat the game's AI and prevent invasions as well as attacks from random enemies. I think for myself and my friends we really enjoyed the fantasy aspect of building a realistic base with walls where we felt like brave Viking soldiers defending the palisades from outsiders

When you kill a boss, you can hang up their trophy. The first one should go on the stonehenge so you can get their power, but other kills keep giving you more.
The boss trophies on your walls will speak to you. Eikthyr says something along the lines of "so you were my death"

hey if you ever need 1 more player i've been looking for a couple of folks to chill with on valheim, im kind of new ish to it, basically ive gotten up to the swamp and have to beat that boss haha.
We actually haven't been on the game in a few months. We are holding out for a major update and will likely return to check out Hearth and Home, and again with later updates. All of our dedicated servers are currently down.
I will resume Valheim content creation once a big update drops though!
I feel nostalgic now..
Time to update *_Valheim_* and it's mods.

As someone who hates sailing I use a mod which allows me to craft 3 other portals which allows me to transport more and more ores and ingots, but they are costly in ressources. The mod is called "Advanced Portals" by RandyKnapp. I still build harbors with ships on my bases for visual reasons.
