@@donhaddix3770 hello and greetings. Outside of heaven though, no one knows for certain that the other thief did not find salvation, for what we do KNOW is that God's mercy is beyond all human comprehension. You can bring your own ideas, bias, even hopes and or corruption to bear, but you can't inform us DEFINITIVELY that the other thief was damned, just I as I or anyone else can't DEFINITIVELY inform you he was not . Which is what St Augustine is saying - get that? What we can do though is Hope in God's Love and Mercy and that is after all what he wants us all to do. AVE MARIA Shalom
The "Once saved, always saved" mentality has done so much harm. I know lots of people who live in habitual sin and even so, they are convinced that they are on their way to heaven because one day in the past they prayed the sinner's prayer. I'm afraid they forgot about working out our salvation with fear and trembling. I pray for the Lord to give them some light. When I was a Protestant, I never thought I was being so arrogant. After all, pride was the first sin.
Raquel It’s like eating once and saying I’m full for ever, I don’t need anymore food. I’m never getting hungry anymore. No but I believe the food is there.
I was also Protestant before so I am not anti protestant. I believe our brothers and sisters in that part of Christianity have alot to offer us all. And there are many gifted teachers we miss in the Catholic Church. May we all be one in unity soon. 🙏
Sufficiency of Christ . “So splendid is the propitiation accomplished at the cross, that every human being that has ever lived is freed from judicial condemnation for his or her sins. When we sing, “Jesus Paid It ALL” we mean it. God does NOT EXACT from any man the judicial penalty that Jesus paid at the Cross. Jesus Christ’s completely sufficient suffering on the Cross for the sins of the world will never be repeated in the case of any human being whatsoever. FURTHERMORE, as a result of the Cross, every man or woman is eligible for the free gift of eternal life. All they need to do is believe in Jesus for that gift. But those who do not believe remain dead in their sins and subject to the corruption that sin always brings. Though eligible for life, they have remained in spiritual death. Hell is the consequence of remaining dead to God. In hell the law of sowing and reaping goes on and on and on. The fire is never put out and the worms of corruption never die. In Hell, the superlative gift of life, paid for by our Savior’s blood, has been missed forever. But the splendid gift is for everybody, for the simple reason that Christ died for everybody equally. THAT WONDERFUL! Let’s get out there and tell people about this.” All The Glory To God
I think it's about the attitude of our heart. I dont think God wants us to be so confident in our salvation that we become arrogant but I dont think He wants us to be so unsure either. As a former protestant back in the Catholic Faith I think the correct response when asked if we are saved or not should be, May the Lord have Mercy on me. 🙏
"He who perserveres to the end shall be saved".....Matthew 24:13; "No I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified". 1 Corinthians 9:27
Bokyo Bokya 😊 if you persevere in faith, then you may be saved. Once you receive faith, you must hold onto it. It is a gift after all that can be forgotten about or held onto.

What is the default human condition? (the ‘spiritual state’ of every human being) Condemnation?. John’s Gospel and the book of Revelation declare the Human ‘default’ Spiritual Condition with clarity and sobriety. POSITIVELY, anyone who believes in Jesus, The Christ will NOT PERISH. John 3:18 defines the ‘default’ state with precision - “…he who does not believe in condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” It is nearly impossible to ‘misunderstand’ that declaration of our LORD JESUS in His conversation with Nicodemus. Then in John 5:24-29 another set of declarations are made by our Lord that further inform and clarify the human spiritual condition. 24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth-those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.”. Of course, Revelation 20 indicates that all of those who are part of the “2ND Resurrection” (which is the Resurrection of ‘CONDEMNATION” of John 5:29) will be raised at the end of time - AFTER the Millennial Kingdom is complete - and will all be sentenced to the LAKE OF FIRE forever and ever - and given ‘differing degrees of judgment’ according to their works as recorded in the “BOOKS” (Revelation 20:11-15). Lake of Fire - THUS the Lake of Fire is the permanent and final disposition of Satan/Lucifer, all the fallen angels/demons, the Beast/Antichrist, the False Prophet, and all UNBELIEVERS of ALL OF THE AGES OF HUMAN HISTORY. Faith is a gift from God. It is freely given to us, and it is indeed required for salvation. However, it is possible to lose faith through doubt. Therefore we must always ask for an increase in faith so we may hold onto the gift so we may be saved.
@josephjackson1956 It saddens me that you imply that your salvation can be KEPT by your owns efforts when I Pet 1:3-5 plainly shows that the power of God keeps you. I suggest that you rely on the clear teaching of Jesus in John 10 that you can NEVER perish so just rightly divide the Word and trust God for your Security ( Psa 37:28, Eph 1:13, I John 5:13) .
Praise God for Dr. Pitre's biblical exposition. But he also raises interesting questions, one of which is: if we are saved through faith and good works, how much or how many acts of good works?
The teaching of the Catholic Church is very clear . . . We fully trust of GOD MERCY. . . . Let the Holy spirit works with in Us . . .for our salvation... Lord we Trust in your GREAT GREAT MERCY @ DIVINE LOVE...🙏🙏🙏
The difficulty with dealing with Calvinists, (once saved always saved) is that we often talk 2 different languages. They build a case verse by verse, we present the truth in the continuity of the context of the scripture. Often like apple's and orange's
It's not even that because Prots fail with the verses. Prots think justification and salvation are different things, such that God OWES them eternal life in Heaven for so-called "believing". But believing in what? If no Baptism, and no Confirmation, and no Eucharist? Possibly no prayer life? I'm not sure _what_ they "believe", but regardless, yay they believe - even the demons believe. (That said, though, some Prots are great! They're not deluded by their televangelists and can be flipped, and get flipped: Baptism, Confirmation, teaching their children, Real Presence, etc.) #Miracles
I was originally saved over two thousand years ago when God the Son took on human flesh and offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice for all of mankind, defeating the power of sin by suffering on the Cross and destroying death through His miraculous Resurrection. I am being saved daily through my intentional decisions to follow Jesus’ example within each situation that I find myself, viewing paradise not as just a someday destination but as the everyday experience of self-denial, of being filled, through the Eucharist, obedience, and love for others, with Christ. I will, (Lord have mercy), be saved at the Great and final Judgment when I give an account for a lifetime of actions, when it becomes clear whether or not I cooperated with the grace so generously bestowed upon me. Who of us, having been blessed beyond all comprehension, should feel the need to insure that regardless of our choices a reward will be ours free and clear? Who of us dare to sit idle with our assurances, interpreting the conditions of the Bridegroom’s invitation while our lamps for illumining the darkness run out of oil? My individual salvation is being worked out with fear and trembling through the unique responsibilities God deemed best to set before me. Based upon the model of the publican who beat his breast and begged for leniency, I am careful to not assume I have a handle on the spiritual state of others. I would do best, rather, to stay focused on my own flagrant shortcomings, reverencing both friends and enemies, all of whom were created in God’s image, as living icons of Christ Jesus. I share my faith, yes, but not out of obligation; a soul that’s found its meaning cannot help but be a witness to such joy. My ongoing testimony is presented through acts of service, in accordance with Christ’s commandment to love God by loving your neighbor. I pray ceaselessly for the courage to fight the good fight, staying faithful until my very last breath upon this earth. ~ Molly Sabourin
gerados "work out your salvation in fear and trembling" Phil 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Many people interpret the word salvation in this verse to refer to eternal salvation from hell. This is improper. Some have interpreted Phil 2:12 to mean that Christians must bring about their own eternal salvation by obeying God. Such an understanding is entirely foreign to the Bible! Others have suggested that the key to understanding this verse is the word out. Working out eternal salvation, they say, is different than working for it. They interpret Paul to mean that we are to put our eternal salvation into practice. This view removes the obvious theological difficulty of the previously mentioned view. However, It does not fit the context. Below is an explanation of the immediate context and Paul’s use of the words salvation and work out. BELIEVERS ARE IN VIEW In our verse Paul calls the readers “my beloved,” an expression he reserves for believers. See also 1:1 where Paul indicates that he is writing, “to the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi.” Believers are already eternally saved and cannot lose that salvation. PAUL IS CALLING BELIEVERS TO ONGOING OBEDIENCE Paul begins this verse with the words “as you have always obeyed.” We expect him to go on to say something like, “keep on obeying.” While he does not use exactly those words, that is implicit in what he does say. Working out one’s salvation is another way of talking about ongoing obedience. The following context bears out this conclusion. FEAR AND TREMBLING? While believers are not to fear hell-Jesus has guaranteed that no will go there (John 3:16-18; 5:24), we are to fear the Lord. This fear reflects both reverence for His awesome grandeur (e.g., Isa 6) and respect for His discipline (e.g., Heb 12:3-11). Believers are thus to exercise ongoing obedience with an attitude of reverential fear. SALVATION FROM WHAT? The word salvation (Gk. soteria) occurs only three times in Philippians. In 1:19 Paul said, “For I know that this will turn out for my salvation through your prayers and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.” Paul wrote Philippians from jail (see Phil 1:12-14). Thus the term salvation in 1:19 might refer to Paul’s deliverance from prison. However, in vv 20-26 Paul hints that while he expected to be released (vv25-26), he might instead glorify Christ by his death (vv20-23). Thus Paul may have used the word salvation metaphorically in v 19 to refer to a victorious triumph over the trials he faced by magnifying Christ through them whether he was released from prison or not. In 1:28 Paul indicates that if the Christians at Philippi demonstrated a lack of fear of their adversaries (i.e., by continuing to boldly proclaim Christ and live for Him), this would be proof to the adversaries of their destruction (Gk. apoleia) and to the Christians at Philippi of their own salvation. Salvation in 1:28, as in 1:19, has two possible meanings. First, it could refer to deliverance from temporal difficulties-the very difficulties God’s adversaries do not escape (they experience “destruction”). Second, it could refer to believers triumphantly glorifying Christ through temporal difficulties, whether they escaped them or not. In both cases temporal, not eternal, deliverance is in view. So when we turn to 2:12 it is reasonable to expect that the word salvation is used by Paul as it has been in the only other two uses in this letter. That is, we expect another reference to temporal (=here and now) deliverance. That is indeed the case. The salvation of 2:12 either refers to deliverance from the difficulties God brings upon the disobedient or to deliverance through the trials that the faithful experience, though not necessarily by means of escaping the trials themselves. WHAT DOES “WORK OUT” MEAN? The word translated work out (katergazomai) means to “achieve, accomplish, bring about, produce, [or] create” (BGD, p. 421). Paul was thus exhorting the Philippian believers to bring about or achieve their own salvation by obedience to God. This makes perfect sense if temporal salvation is in view. Compare 1 Cor 11:30; James 1:21; 2:14; 5:19-20. The translation work out is potentially misleading since one meaning of work out is to exercise something we already have (e.g., “he works out three times a week”). That is not what the Greek word means. It only can legitimately be translated work out in the sense of accomplishing something (as in “he worked out a solution to the budget deficit”). The idea that the word out is the key to understanding this verse is unsupported by the meaning of the Greek word in question or the context. CONCLUSION Phil 2:12 is not dealing with eternal salvation at all. Rather, it is dealing either with temporal salvation from the calamities which come upon the disobedient or with temporal salvation through the trials which faithful believers face. Therefore, get to work and keep on working. Seek to utilize every opportunity to glorify Christ. Remember, it always pays to obey God and it never pays to disobey Him. Shalom
gerarados saving faith means believing in the Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life (cf 1 Tim 1:16). Nothing else is saving faith. Not only is believing for everlasting life enough, it is the only way to have everlasting life. Jesus guarantees everlasting life to all who simply believe in Him for it with no strings attached. DO YOU BELIEVE THIS? The salvation obtained by faith plus works is not soteriological entrance into heaven. Rather it is a salvation of "brethren" (regenerate believers) from the temporal, psychological, spiritual, or possible physical consequences (sin unto death) of a non-working faith resulting in a negative assessment at the Judgement seat of Christ. It's imperative not to confuse the "Judgement Seat of Christ" with the "Great White Throne Judgement, the latter is for non-believers and if you believe the first paragraph Jong you have just become a regenerate BELIEVER, and will surely enter His KIngdom. @@ronaller5209 This (long explanation) is why we have a Church and a Magisterium, because you say it means this and they say it means that. Also, we are commanded to rejoice in our salvation, boast in our salvation, and boast that we know the Lord. This also must be weighed in to the suspension of judgement that Paul talks about to the Corinthians. We need to proclaim how great and certain the Lord's salvation is, whether or not we end up being saved. His mercy towards us as individual believers is praised in many of the Psalms. It is far easier to go astray in doubting the Lord's mercy towards us and salvation promised to us, than to go astray being confident in his mercy and salvation. I can be wrong about whether or not I as an individual will be found an heir of that salvation on the day he comes again to judge the world, but my confidence in all he's promised to have done for me and that he will do for me is commanded by Him and by the Church as His agent. We do well to heed and obey those commands, lest we fall short and be disqualified.
We are not supposed to judge anyone, including ourselves either good or bad. Try sharing this with a once saved/always saved Baptist and they tend to get mad.
Hebrews 3.6 tells us that we will be saved if hold on to our confidence, implying that if we lose or cast off our confidence, we will not be saved. "But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory." That must be weighed in to the suspension of judgement that Paul talks about in his Epistle to the Corinthians.
The One True Faith, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, does not misunderstand. Men outside the Church, misunderstand because they refuse to submit to the Church founded by Jesus Christ.
Yes it’s true that through Jesus alone that salvation is offered to us. But how did Jesus hand down his provisions for the practice of his teachings? I believe it’s through the Church he founded on Peter as a the rock.
Brant brings up the subject of intentional sin we may do. Leviticus talks about unintentional sins, but what about intentional sins? Could intentional sin be atoned for by a sacrifice? Are intentional sins also taken on the cross? What if I feel that I am knowingly sinning? Am I damned? What is the point of living? Is my faith illusion? Is God delighted of my absurd, useless life? Moreover I had understood, certainly wrongly, that intentional sin is almost the same as blasphemy to the Holy Spirit. So I am done. But it is not what I feel. So what is true except confusion.
To claim that you have to be 100% sure of your salvation in order to be saved is very extreme, must say I've never heard this, but the message is that we CAN be sure that God has saved us through Jesus, as long as we follow him. The price has Jesus paid. But we don't deny that there is going to be a judgement of our lives of the things we have done, good or bad, and this is scary of course. I'm Evangelical-Lutheran but I think we have Protestant consensus on this.

why did Luther throw out James, Jude and the Apocalypse? Hebrews, James, Jude and Revelation Main article: Antilegomena Luther made an attempt to remove the books of Hebrews, James, Jude and Revelation from the canon (notably, he perceived them to go against certain Protestant doctrines such as sola gratia and sola fide)[citation needed] but his followers did not generally accept Luther's personal judgment in this matter. However, these books are ordered last in the German-language Luther Bible to this day.[6] Some Catholic sources state and certain historians contend that until the definition of the Council of Trent issued on April 8, 1546, the Roman Catholic Church had not yet dogmatically defined the contents of the biblical canon for Catholics and thus settled the matter.[7][8][9][10][11][12] though in the 4th century the Council of Rome had outlined the books which now appear in the Catholic Canon,[13] Luther considered Hebrews, James, Jude, and the Revelation to be "disputed books", which he included in his translation but placed separately at the end in his New Testament, published in 1522. This group of books begins with the book of Hebrews, and in its preface Luther states, "Up to this point we have had to do with the true and certain chief books of the New Testament. The four which follow have from ancient times had a different reputation." Some[who?] opine that Luther's low view of these books was due more to his theological reservations than to any historical basis regarding them.[2]
1 Peter 1:3-9 ESV [3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [4] to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, [5] who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. [6] In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, [7] so that the tested genuineness of your faith-more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire-may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. [8] Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, [9] obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
But is it not also a humble thing to trust God at His word through Absolution, Baptism and the Eucharist; His promises of complete forgiveness, adoption, and true union under Christ the head? Not to say from myself, I declare I'm saved; rather to hear the Word of the Lord, 'I forgive all your sins' 1 John 1:7; 'you are my beloved son' Matthew 3:17; and that beautiful message from Paul, 'God ... made us alive together in Christ ... and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus' Ephesians 2:1-10. Can we not trust our advocate, our perfect mediator, Jesus Christ the righteous?
You can. But considering the fruits of many of the self styled faithfuls, Catholic Church have long concluded that there faith is only in their words/minds not in their heart/souls. Otherwise how dare they cherry pick from scriptures and deductively make an artificial salvation plan rather than inductively arrive at the original salvation plan.
Why we need the 'grace of final perseverance.' Why we say "pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death." Re: 1 Corinthians 4.3-4a et al: Why have modern translations banned the word 'man' from almost every bible passage? [that I should be judged by you or any human court....] Emasculation? To avoid offending fem libbers? In fact, the word has been virtually banned from all church documents, homilies and literature. It's been replaced by 'human being,' 'human kind,' or the redundant 'human person.' But unless you are one of the 3 persons of the Trinity or an angel, barring intelligent alien life, you must be a human being. Next up, they'll change the Nicene Creed from "and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man" to: "and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became a human person." The official Bible of the One, True Church is the Latin Vulgate. The Douay Rheims is the english translation. Use those. Notice that most modern translations of the bible omit Matt. 17:21. This is purposefully done. It is not an accident. Jordan Peterson has some good ideas, but he has not studied the science of God. Be careful.
Jihn 3:16 GOD loved US ALL!!! Only those who really believe in HIM and declare JESUS You are my LORD and my GOD 2 Corinthians 4 King James Version 4 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. 11 For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you. 13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. 15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. 16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. th-cam.com/video/sbMbSzvUy_0/w-d-xo.html
This is why miracles are required for a person to be canonized a saint. Apart from the miracle requirement, there is an extensive investigation of the person’s life, which can take years to complete, to demonstrate they lived a life of exceptional holiness. But that is not enough because, as this video explains, only God has the omniscience to know the person’s heart completely. Thus miracles are required, which are almost always miraculous cures of the sick. These too are investigated thoroughly, and can only be deemed authentic if they meet four criteria; 1. The sick person must be cured spontaneously, meaning no other natural or medical explanation can be found. 2. The cure must be immediate, meaning they did not get better over time but in an instant. 3. It must be complete. So in the case of an inoperable brain tumor, it cant just get smaller or better, it has to vanish entirely. And 4. It must be enduring. They can’t relapse. Nowadays, with the modern imaging technology available, these miracles are astoundingly well documented and impossible to disprove. You literally have MRI, CT, Xray images of incurable pathologies dated and signed, and then repeat images where the disease process has vanished utterly. Panels of doctors, not all Catholic either but deliberately including non-believers, must be unable to find any possible natural explanation. Now if a sick person prays specifically to a deceased person who they believe is likely a saint, or is already declared “servant of God” or beatified, but is not yet declared a saint, asking that deceased person to pray for them to God for a miraculous cure, and the miracle happens, then it is reasonable to believe that the deceased person is indeed in heaven, and was able to hear that prayer and intercede for that person at the very mercy seat of God in heaven, and this is seen also as a kind of sign that God, by performing the miracle, may Himself approve of that person’s canonization as a saint. If you want to hear some really beautiful and mind-blowing stuff, check out the miracles. The modern ones with all the images and proof. They are wonderful. Great for strengthening one’s faith, which i suppose is the main reason God does them :)
What about 1 John 5:13? “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13. Indeed, it was the error of many Puritans that suggested that only those who had assurance were actually justified. Also, many Protestants who say that they will be in Heaven even if they walk away from Jesus and sin all they want are rejecting how their baptismal identities bid them live (Romans 6). These are troubling doctrines. However, God wants us to know and have assurance that we are justified and saved. He does not want us to doubt. We are to KNOW that we HAVE eternal life. He gives us his promises in scripture to comfort our troubled consciences and know that he has justified all who believe, even though we sin. I know I am in Christ and justified because I receive God’s absolution for my sins (John 20:19-23), have been baptized (Mark 16:16, Gal. 3:27), and believe in Jesus Christ (John 3:16, Rom. 4:25). I am also about to be confirmed and will soon receive the true body and true blood of Jesus into my sinful mouth on a regular basis. What greater assurance could I have than the gifts of God in His Word and Sacraments through which He continually grants me faith? “O, the surpassing kindness and love of God! He did not hate us, or reject us, or bear a grudge against us; instead He was patient and forbearing. In His mercy He took upon Himself our sins. He Himself gave up His own Son as a ransom for us, the holy one for the lawless, the guiltless for the guilty, the just for the unjust, the incorruptible for the corruptible, the immortal for the mortal. For what else but His righteousness could have covered our sins? In whom was it possible for us, the lawless and ungodly, to be justified, except in the Son of God alone? O the sweet exchange, O the incomprehensible work of God, O the unexpected blessings, that the sinfulness of many should be hidden in one righteous person, while the righteousness of One should justify many sinners!”-The Epistle to Diognetus, 9:2-5, in The Apostolic Fathers
What about 1John 5:11-13? " And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He who has the son has the life; he does not have the son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life." It's not, initial justification and then follow the teachings of the catholic church. It's initial justification and continual justification throughout all eternity. It's by grace through faith in the beginning and the end, so that you can know that you have eternal life from the moment of salvation until you die. Praise God, through Jesus Christ, for His indescribable gift. No one who receives the gift of righteousness and the Holy Spirit continues to sin. Not because they'll go to hell but because they're born of God.
John's use of eternal life involves inaugurated eschatology. i.e. The end times are brought into the present. His use of 'life' IMO has a definite leaning towards knowing God in the now, i.e. having an intimate relationship w God (Jn 17.3). Paul and others on the other hand use eternal life to refer to what is given after Jesus returns to judge. In my reading it is closely associated with resurrection. Consider how Jesus refers to eternal life in Mt 25.46 and Paul in Rom 2.7 and how that differs from John's use of life and eternal life. Unfortunately, John's theology can be used systematically to dodge the implications of Paul, Peters and the author of Hebrews statements with respect to the conditionality of salvation, falling away etc. Even in John's theology, he has Jesus stressing the need to keep abiding in Jesus (Jn 15.2,6,10), so the inaugurated gifting of eternal life (his way of viewing it) is not a guarantor that it will be kept for all time without the possibility of a future condemnation, especially for those who walk away from Jesus of their own accord (not His) through sin and unbelief.
he says that only God can judge the human heart and say that someone is justified. but the Church does just that when they declare someone a saint. or am I missing something?
The Church is the Body of Christ and has been granted Divine Authority to "bind and lose." Whatever the Church "binds on earth" shall be "bound in heaven." The Holy Spirit guides the canonization process of Saints and infallibly declares that they are in heaven. Your average Joe has no authority to judge the hearts of others.
Living without certainty about your eternal destiny is absurd. How would you have any peace at all, if there was a 0.1% chance you were going to go to hell for eternity?
I know that if i die tonight i will not be saved even though i have confessed my sins. My sins have damned me to Hell and Christ is justified in sending me to that place. I have cried, i have prayed, and i have lost myself in Christ that suffering is all a means to doomed eternity because i truly am the worst sinner God will have ever judged but until my time of death i keep myself lost in Christ hoping to kiss his feet as i know where i'll be going and it pains my aching soul everyday..
“If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.” 1 John 1:9 NABRE www.bible.com/463/1jn.1.9.nabre
The Church makes judgments apart from the particular and general judgments. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to canonize saints. We wouldn't call Paul of Tarsus, St. Paul
Can we be dogmatic about eternal security? Even the great apostle Paul humbly admitted in 1 Corinthians 7 that he had no direct commandment from the Lord regarding virgins but nevertheless he modestly said that his instructions could be trusted on the basis that he was led and walked by the Spirit. By the same token I abhor churches that teach eternal security with undeniable assurance. They are dogmatic about an issue that neither Jesus nor his apostles addressed either directly or specifically. Among many proof texts to the contrary I believe that that is a very personal matter between God and a sinner. In my opinion this critical issue should be considered very carefully in the light of the explicit warnings and consequent danger that "the wages of sin is death."
Well said! The virtue of hope pushes us to be precisely hopeful about our eternal salvation. Moreover, there were some saints (and I dare say some are still living with us) that Jesus told them that they would be saved, some even to be canonized. @@evangeliumproductions3856 I just copied an pasted, printed in Greensboro News & Record, September 2008: Baptism provides path for rebirth, salvation • By Glenn Lanham Special to the News & Record
• Sep 8, 2008 Are you born again? Living here in the Bible Belt, someone will almost surely ask you this before you die. Usually they mean, “Have you given your heart to Jesus to make him your personal Lord and Savior and have you stepped out in faith?” This is a wonderful and even necessary thing to do. It is also an action based on their interpretation of John 3:1-21, but it doesn’t have much to do with the text or context of the passage. The early church, in fact, focused on John 3:5: “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” The early church unanimously interpreted this passage as referring to baptism and has continued to do so for 2000 years. Any other interpretation is very recent, in church years. Look at the context: In John 1:33, John the Baptist speaks of baptism in water and Spirit. Look as well at John 7:38-39, or John 9:7, where the man born blind went and washed, and then he could see; or John 13: 8, where Jesus says, “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.” (We receive our inheritance as adopted sons and daughters of God when we are justified, or freed, from our sins). You can also play some “Bible trivia”: Count how many times the words water, baptism, baptized or Spirit appear in the first nine chapters of John’s Gospel. Other passages in the Bible uphold this, as well. Titus 3:5 says, “Not because of any righteous deeds we had done, but because of His mercy, He saved us through the bath of rebirth, and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Note the three themes of water, Spirit and rebirth, just like in John 3. In Ezekiel 36:25-26 we read: “I will sprinkle clean water upon you to cleanse you from all your impurities.” In 1 Peter 3: 20-21, we read about Noah’s ark: “This prefigures baptism, which saves you now.” The early church fathers understood this clearly, and unanimously declared this interpretation of the Scriptures. Irenaeus of Lyons, a grand-disciple of St. John the Evangelist, wrote: “Naaman ... was purified upon his being baptized. ... For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord ... being spiritually regenerated as newborn babes ...” He then goes on to quote John 3:5. (Letters, 190 A.D.) Athanasius of Alexandria, the great defender of the Trinity against the Arian heresy, wrote: “As we are all from earth and die in Adam, so being regenerated from above of water and spirit, in the Christ we are all quickened.” (Four Discourses, 360 A.D.) St. Augustine of Hippo, some 200 years after Irenaeus, wrote, “Those who, though they have not received the washing of regeneration, die for the confession of Christ - it avails them just as much for the forgiveness of their sins as if they had been washed in the sacred font of baptism. For He that said ‘if anyone is not reborn of water and Spirit, he will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (City of God, 419 A.D.) Of course, baptism is the sacrament of faith, and faith is necessary for salvation, as well. See Mark 16:16 and Acts 16:31. So when someone asks you, have you given your heart to Jesus, I hope you say, of course! If they ask, “Are you born again?” say yes, I was baptized and I believe! I was born again in baptism! "No I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified". 1 Corinthians 9:27 LIKE PAUL i GUESS???
The idea that salvation from hell is a totally free gift is often ridiculed today. Many suggest that eternal salvation is very costly to us. They encourage people to whom they witness to count the cost of becoming a Christian. However the Scriptures clearly and repeatedly speak of eternal salvation as a free gift which is without cost to us. The Lord Jesus said to the woman at the well, "If you knew the gift of God . . . you would have asked . . . and He would have given you living water" (John 4:10). Similarly John records these words of Jesus Christ in Revelation 21:6, "I will give to him who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost." G. H. Lang said regarding this verse, "The water of life is not acquired by the process of fighting a life-long battle and conquering at last. It is a free gift, imparting spiritual life to the spiritually dead" (Revelation, p. 94; italics his). Revelation 22:17 echoes this sentiment; "And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one whom wishes take the water without cost." The Apostle Paul called eternal salvation a free gift (or gift) not less than nine times (Romans 3:24; 5:15 [twice], 16 [twice], 17; 6:23; 2 Corinthians 9:15; Ephesians 2:8). For example, in Romans 3:24 Paul said that believers are "justified freely by His grace." Similarly, in Ephesians 2:8-9 he wrote, "For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it [salvation] is the gift of God, not of works, lest any one should boast." James spoke of the new birth as a gift from God: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father . . . Of His own will He brought us forth [regenerated us] by the word of truth . . ." (James 1:17-18). The author of the Book of Hebrews spoke of eternal salvation as "the heavenly gift" (Hebrews 6:4). Clearly the New Testament is not at all reluctant to describe eternal salvation as a free gift. Gospel proclamation which carefully and clearly offers to sinners eternal salvation as a free gift is far from being a false gospel as some charge today. Indeed, it is the one and only true gospel. As ambassadors for Christ we are to proclaim the good news that Jesus paid the complete price for our eternal salvation (2 Corinthians 8:9; Colossians 2:13-14; Titus 3:4-7; 1 Peter 1:18-19. There is nothing left for us to pay. No cost to count. Just a free gift to receive by placing our faith in Jesus Christ and Him alone. Now that is good news. All the Glory to God
So true but having faith and not doing God's will does not save. At least thats what Jesus himself said: that it is those who do the will of God that will enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 7:21 Remain blessed.
@@Leonard_izuegbunam Not Everyone Who Says “Lord, Lord” Will Enter the Kingdom: Matthew 7:21-23 21 Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord,” shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?” 23 And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.” The interpretation of this passage hinges not on the expression, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,'” but on the expression, “He who does the will of My Father.” Jesus did not say that no one who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom. He said, rather, that not all who say that will enter. So, who among those who say “Lord, Lord” will enter? Answer: those who do the will of the Father. What, then, does Jesus mean by the will of the Father and who are those who do it? One popular view today suggests that by the expression “the will of My Father” Jesus meant a life characterized by obedience to all that the Father has commanded. Thus those who do the will of the Father would be people who live godly, holy lives. There are several problems with this interpretation. First, God is perfect and one cannot enter His kingdom without becoming absolutely perfect (Isa. 64:6; Gal. 3:6-14; Heb. 10:1-18; James 2:10). Second, one cannot be said to have done the will of the Father unless he does it completely, 100%. To violate even just one of God’s commands is to break them all (James 2:10). Third, even if these first two objections were not valid, this view leads to the unbiblical conclusion that no one can ever be sure that he is saved until he dies or is raptured. No one could ever know if he had obeyed enough. Yet the Scriptures are clear that the apostles knew with absolute certainty that they were saved and they wanted their readers to know this as well (Luke 10:20; John 13:10; Rom. 8:31-39; 2 Pet. 1:1; 1 John 2:12-14, 25; 5:13). There is another view as to what Jesus meant by the expression “the will of My Father.” When Jesus spoke of doing the will of the Father to obtain kingdom entrance, He had one act of obedience in mind: believing the gospel. It is God’s will that none should perish but that all should come to a change of mind about the gospel (2 Pet. 3:9). When asked the question, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent” (John 6:28-29). In John 3:36 John is quoted as saying, “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe/obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” The word translated “he who does not believe” in the KJV and the NKJV and “he who does not obey” in the NASV is the verb apeitheo. The leading Greek Lexicon of the New Testament by Bauer, Arndt, Gingrich, and Danker makes a very insightful comment about apeitheo which sheds light on both John 3:36 and our passage, Matthew 7:21-23: Since in the view of the early Christians, the supreme disobedience was a refusal to believe their gospel, apeitheo may be restricted in some passages to the meaning disbelieve, be an unbeliever. This sense, though greatly disputed (it is not found outside our literature [i.e., outside the New Testament, the Apostolic Fathers, and other early Christian literature]), seems most probable in John 3:36; Acts 14:2; 19:9; Rom. 15:31. (BAGD, p.82) A person who trusts in Christ alone obeys completely the will of the Father to believe in Jesus Christ alone for eternal salvation. Such a person obtains absolute perfection before God [positionally speaking] since Christ takes away all of his sins and gives him His righteousness in exchange (2 Cor. 5:21; Col. 2:13-14; Heb. 10:1-18). And, such a person can be 100% sure of his salvation since he can know with certainty that he has done the will of the Father (in relation to the gospel) once and for all (cf. John 3:16; 5:24; Rom. 8:38-39; 1 John 5:13). Acts 5:32 and Acts 6:7 also refer to believing the gospel as an act of obedience to God. This passage, rather than supporting the Lordship Salvation or Works Salvation positions, actually contradicts them. Probably many of those who will say “Lord, Lord have we not prophesied, cast out demons, and done many wonders in Your name” are people who in this life were pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and the like. They may have baptized many, prayed and witnessed much, and done what they thought were many deeds which made them think that they were probably saved. Notice that Jesus does not question whether they actually did such deeds. Yet He rebukes them for not doing the Father’s will and He denies them kingdom entrance. Those who do not believe in Christ alone for their salvation have failed to do the will of the Father. I do not believe that those who hold to Lordship Salvation or even Works Salvation are necessarily unsaved. Many people who now believe in Lordship Salvation, and even some who now hold to out-and-out Works Salvation, came to simple trust in Christ alone at some point in their lives and later became confused about the gospel. On the other hand, it is a sad possibility that some in the Lordship Salvation movement and many, if not most, in the Works Salvation camp have never placed their trust in Christ alone. They may go to their graves preaching passages like Matthew 7:21-23 only to find out that Jesus was talking about them, not someone else. I hope and pray that such people wake up before it is too late. The way that leads to life is narrow (Matt. 7:13-14). Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by Him (John 14:6). Self-righteous people are on the wrong path. They are on the broad way that leads to destruction (Matt. 7:13). Jesus came to save those who know that they are sick and lost and in absolute need of His deliverance (Matt. 9:12-13; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:31-32; 18:9-14). Of course, that is all of us, all of mankind. However, some people are unwilling to own up to the truth. The cross of Christ is a stumbling block to those who think that they are good enough to deserve kingdom entrance. Those who throughout the course of their lives reject the free gift of salvation and refuse to trust in Christ alone will find out that in reality they are sinners, those who “practice lawlessness” (Matt. 7:23). Only then it will be too late. What would you say if you appeared before God and He said, “Why should I let you into My kingdom?” Matthew 7:22 is the wrong answer. The right answer is, “Lord, I am an unworthy sinner who has placed his complete trust upon what Jesus did for me upon the cross, and He promised that whoever believes in Him has eternal life” (Luke 18:13-14; John 3:16; Rom. 4:5; Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 3:5). May we call people to do the will of God so that they can obtain entrance into the kingdom of God. Those who place their trust wholly in Jesus Christ have done the will of the Father and have already passed from death to life (John 5:24) and will not come into judgment regarding their eternal destiny (John 3:18). The "Once saved, always saved" mentality has done so much harm. I know lots of people who live in habitual sin and even so, they are convinced that they are on their way to heaven because one day in the past they prayed the sinner's prayer. I'm afraid they forgot about working out our salvation with fear and trembling.

Let’s get out there and tell people about this.”

John 3:18 defines the ‘default’ state with precision - “…he who does not believe in condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
It is nearly impossible to ‘misunderstand’ that declaration of our LORD JESUS in His conversation with Nicodemus.

I suggest that you rely on the clear teaching of Jesus in John 10 that you can NEVER perish so just rightly divide the Word and trust God for your Security ( Psa 37:28, Eph 1:13, I John 5:13) .
I think grace is given from God, not faith. Faith is your partecipation in trusting God's judgment.

I pray ceaselessly for the courage to fight the good fight, staying faithful until my very last breath upon this earth.

gerados "work out your salvation in fear and trembling"
Phil 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
BELIEVERS ARE IN VIEW
In our verse Paul calls the readers “my beloved,” an expression he reserves for believers. See also 1:1 where Paul indicates that he is writing, “to the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi.” Believers are already eternally saved and cannot lose that salvation.
PAUL IS CALLING BELIEVERS TO ONGOING OBEDIENCE
Paul begins this verse with the words “as you have always obeyed.” We expect him to go on to say something like, “keep on obeying.” While he does not use exactly those words, that is implicit in what he does say.
CONCLUSION
Phil 2:12 is not dealing with eternal salvation at all.

We do well to heed and obey those commands, lest we fall short and be disqualified.
thanks.

Indeed. The misunderstanding around what St. Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth endures to this day...

But we don't deny that there is going to be a judgement of our lives of the things we have done, good or bad, and this is scary of course. why did Luther throw out James, Jude and the Apocalypse? Hebrews, James, Jude and Revelation
Main article: Antilegomena
Luther made an attempt to remove the books of Hebrews, James, Jude and Revelation from the canon (notably, he perceived them to go against certain Protestant doctrines such as sola gratia and sola fide)[citation needed] but his followers did not generally accept Luther's personal judgment in this matter. However, these books are ordered last in the German-language Luther Bible to this day.[6]
Some Catholic sources state and certain historians contend that until the definition of the Council of Trent issued on April 8, 1546, the Roman Catholic Church had not yet dogmatically defined the contents of the biblical canon for Catholics and thus settled the matter.[7][8][9][10][11][12] though in the 4th century the Council of Rome had outlined the books which now appear in the Catholic Canon,[13] Luther considered Hebrews, James, Jude, and the Revelation to be "disputed books", which he included in his translation but placed separately at the end in his New Testament, published in 1522. This group of books begins with the book of Hebrews, and in its preface Luther states, "Up to this point we have had to do with the true and certain chief books of the New Testament. The four which follow have from ancient times had a different reputation." Some[who?] opine that Luther's low view of these books was due more to his theological reservations than to any historical basis regarding them.[2]
1 Peter 1:3-9 ESV
[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Why we need the 'grace of final perseverance.' Why we say "pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death."

4 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
11 For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you.
13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.
15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.
16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Paul: only god can make the final judgement
Protestants: I’m saved!
How then does the church proclaim certain people as saints in heaven if we are not certain they are in heaven?.
Whatever you bind on earth, it would be bound in heaven.
Are u catholic or protestant?
Sirach 5:4-7
he says that only God can judge the human heart and say that someone is justified. but the Church does just that when they declare someone a saint. or am I missing something?
The Church is the Body of Christ and has been granted Divine Authority to "bind and lose." Whatever the Church "binds on earth" shall be "bound in heaven." The Holy Spirit guides the canonization process of Saints and infallibly declares that they are in heaven.
Your average Joe has no authority to judge the hearts of others.

Are you born again?
Living here in the Bible Belt, someone will almost surely ask you this before you die. Usually they mean, “Have you given your heart to Jesus to make him your personal Lord and Savior and have you stepped out in faith?”
This is a wonderful and even necessary thing to do.
In Ezekiel 36:25-26 we read: “I will sprinkle clean water upon you to cleanse you from all your impurities.” In 1 Peter 3: 20-21, we read about Noah’s ark: “This prefigures baptism, which saves you now.”
The early church fathers understood this clearly, and unanimously declared this interpretation of the Scriptures. (Letters, 190 A.D.)
Athanasius of Alexandria, the great defender of the Trinity against the Arian heresy, wrote: “As we are all from earth and die in Adam, so being regenerated from above of water and spirit, in the Christ we are all quickened.” (Four Discourses, 360 A.D.)
St. Augustine of Hippo, some 200 years after Irenaeus, wrote, “Those who, though they have not received the washing of regeneration, die for the confession of Christ - it avails them just as much for the forgiveness of their sins as if they had been washed in the sacred font of baptism. For He that said ‘if anyone is not reborn of water and Spirit, he will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (City of God, 419 A.D.)
Of course, baptism is the sacrament of faith, and faith is necessary for salvation, as well. See Mark 16:16 and Acts 16:31.
So when someone asks you, have you given your heart to Jesus, I hope you say, of course! If they ask, “Are you born again?” say yes, I was baptized and I believe! I was born again in baptism!

Revelation 22:17 echoes this sentiment; "And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one whom wishes take the water without cost."
The Apostle Paul called eternal salvation a free gift (or gift) not less than nine times (Romans 3:24; 5:15 [twice], 16 [twice], 17; 6:23; 2 Corinthians 9:15; Ephesians 2:8). For example, in Romans 3:24 Paul said that believers are "justified freely by His grace." Similarly, in Ephesians 2:8-9 he wrote, "For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it [salvation] is the gift of God, not of works, lest any one should boast."
James spoke of the new birth as a gift from God: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father . .
Matthew 7:21

Not Everyone Who Says “Lord, Lord” Will Enter the Kingdom:
Matthew 7:21-23
21 Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord,” shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?”
23 And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.”
The interpretation of this passage hinges not on the expression, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,'” but on the expression, “He who does the will of My Father.”
Jesus did not say that no one who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom.
The leading Greek Lexicon of the New Testament by Bauer, Arndt, Gingrich, and Danker makes a very insightful comment about apeitheo which sheds light on both John 3:36 and our passage, Matthew 7:21-23:
Since in the view of the early Christians, the supreme disobedience was a refusal to believe their gospel, apeitheo may be restricted in some passages to the meaning disbelieve, be an unbeliever. This sense, though greatly disputed (it is not found outside our literature [i.e., outside the New Testament, the Apostolic Fathers, and other early Christian literature]), seems most probable in John 3:36; Acts 14:2; 19:9; Rom. 15:31. (BAGD, p.82)
A person who trusts in Christ alone obeys completely the will of the Father to believe in Jesus Christ alone for eternal salvation.
