    This video will help people have good randomized games, and stop thousands of cards from being bent in the future. People are mad that I bent 40 commons as an example to achieve that. Lol.

      I wouldn't say "your" shuffling technique.. I've been shuffling like this since I was a kid playing solitaire. Anyone with a gambling grandparent knows how to shuffle like this.

      I have shuffled my deck over a hundred times by now, flat as a board still. And stiff as one too. I still have trouble separating the cards for cut shuffling they are so flat they stick together like one solid brick with a flat as a board surface.

    This is effectively how casino dealers shuffle decks. They don't want to bend the cards for fear of marking them.

  • @KingHeadbang

    Riffle shuffling doesn't even damage the cards much. When my limited deck has nothing of value in it I don't bother sleeving most of the time. It actually feels quite freeing to play with unsleeved cards, like riding your bike with no hands.

  • @Harlizarrd
    @Harlizarrd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    As someone who has experience in the magic (magician) community, this is just a cleaner riffle. If you ever go to a casino that doesn't have a shuffling machine, you'll see the dealers riffle like this and then add extra flourishes after to make it look good.

    If you place the finger you use to press the cards closer to your thumb (which you use to pull them up), you will bend the cards even less. If you, instead of placing your thumb in the bottom part of the deck, place it on the top and do it with the top instead, the fingers will get closer and you will be able to shuffle it with minimal bending

  • @ThorsShadow

    A quick tip to anyone wondering about the randomness you achieve doing riffle shuffles (the technique and variation he showed in the video). When you do about 7 or 8 of those, your deck will be almost perfectly random (you can't get 100% randomness). You will get diminishing returns (you'll get less "more randomness") when going over 8 riffle shuffles.

    So idk if it was literally every other video I've seen in existence or I'm just stupid, but I've been trying to riffle-shuffle with the corners *away* from me, and I happened to notice you were doing it with the corners TOWARDS you, and I just got it first try with that, so again, unsure if it was ALL OTHER VIDEOS or just me being stupid, but thank you from over 4 years in the future for fixing my awful frustration I've had for the last day or so.
    PS: Wasn't even for MTG cards, just a shuffle in general. I was trying with your standard Bicycle poker cards and happened to at least get SOMEWHAT of a riffle on the first attempt doing it correctly.

    it's just called a riffle shuffle, and technically the corner riffle is the correct way to do it. it's how card rooms shuffle for poker decks as it exposes the least amount of info and doesn't damage the cards.

  • @andesmountain9178
    @andesmountain9178 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Something funny about this is that this IS a poker shuffle. The “new” technique is to minimize how much of the card is visible during a riffle shuffle, which is very important in casinos. The “poker” technique is just called a riddle shuffle, your most basic shuffle technique. Furthermore, the “cutting over and over” is called an Indian shuffle, which requires 10,000 iterations to have a perfectly randomized deck, while a poker deck requires only 7-11 riffle shuffles to be considered randomized. Just some knowledge for y’all.

    I’d recommend using a casino shuffle which is basically what you showed in this video except using the corner of a card instead of the end, it’s what I do with all my card games because it minimizes the bending and it’s easier to do than a poker shuffle

    "Without bending" *proceeds to bend the cards
    I prefer pile shuffling but it can take longer depending on the person shuffling.. I had a buddy that would always place down his cards into each pile extremely slowly and it was like nails on a chalkboard. It did however push me to shuffle my cards faster so I can usually pile shuffle my deck seven or eight times in a few minutes.

    I really miss playing mtg with no sleeves rather than treating cards like delicate and priceless art. I wish wizards could come up with a business model which allowed all cards to be cheap, easily replaced, and freely tradable without the need to look up its monetary value first.

    As much as my prefered way is slower, if I had to play without sleeves, I would still do a six or eight pile shuffle. Means you don't ever have to bend them at all, and the amount of shuffling is significant.

    • @MTGDegree
      @MTGDegree  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's a common misconception! Pile shuffling adds zero randomization, since it is a pattern :)

    • @justking2114
      @justking2114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah pile shuffling doesn't randomize the cards, if you remember the order the cards where in and do a pile shuffle with a number divisible by 60 you can predict order of the cards pretty easily

    • @Harlizarrd
      @Harlizarrd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that seems legit. If you pile shuffle and end up with no randomness, that was on purpose. Pile shuffling combined with overhand shuffling is plenty of randomness.
      Conversely in the magician/sleight of hand community, riffle (poker, as you call it) shuffling is the definition of fake shuffling. If done right, you can riffle a thousand times and still know where the chosen card is, because it's still on the top.
      For most players, pile shuffling combined with overhanding each pile and then overhanding the deck, introduces enough randomness to break up clumps of lands and creatures etc. Saying that pile shuffling "adds zero randomization" is either overly suspicious of every player, or misinformed.

    • @justking2114
      @justking2114 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harley Martin-Farrell No, mathematically speaking, the pile shuffle adds no randomness to the deck, it just exchanges one pattern of cards with another. Like sure your lands may be broken up, but isn't it weird whenever you draw a certain creature you always draw this enchantment with it? A player may even sort their cards to give them a perfect land to spell ratio and then use a pile shuffle with a few overhands to keep that pattern. Sure it may not make a difference for casual play but it is important.

    • @Harlizarrd
      @Harlizarrd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Notice the bit at the start of my comment: "If you pile shuffle and end up with no randomness, that was on purpose".
      If you perfectly riffle shuffle every time, which is doable, you also add no randomness. The difference is in the intent, not the method. I can sort my cards into 6 even piles and stack them on top of each other and that's still random, as long as I don't know the order of the cards in the first place. If you're combating mana weaving, it's a different story, but at that point the cards have already been tampered with.

  • @blim8777
    @blim8777 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Talking about sleeving or not sleeving cards:
    If I sleeve my cards with perfect size inner sleeves only, which cons will I get?
    Usually common sleeves deteriorate by slowly removing the painted part from the transparent one.
    Moreover perfect size inner sleeves are cheaper and very easy to replace if you break some of them
