As a Chinese student in grade 12, I have gone through all the fundamental education and am at the last step before college, I agree with her 100 percent while she exactly depicted the Chinese educational circumstances of the time, her viewpoints are objective and examples are typical, I can't see anything she overpraises or overcriticizes.

So basically in China, someone who fails out of system is already able to do basic calculus but not enough? Average human capital development in China is much, much higher than in US by far!

This one school in Shanghai is by no means representative of China. This is a special case for sure.

I live in China and I visited numerous schools from various cities as a student. This is certainly not a special case, obedience and authority are emphasized majorly in Chinese classrooms. Pretty suffocating, I would say.

As a parent I would say it is rubbish to compare US education system with that from China. The Speaker of this video does not know the the education system of say Japan, Taiwan, South Korea or Singapore. She thought the education in US is same everywhere except China. The truth is each country has a different standard appropriate only to that location.
In China with 1.4 billion every child will have to be competitive on the day he or she is born. If that child is born in US with 1/4 people but with more arable land the life is more relax and the education is less demanding. if one want the least demanding education go to AUstralia.
The moral of the story is education can be more cometitive in countries with more population. Every child can be educated to suit the local condition but just don't come out to compete with others internationally.
Lastly Chinese culturally are respectful to their teachers. Pupils are expected to be obiedient. Chinese live closely together and discipline is essential plus a compromise of certain personal freedom for the common good. This is normal in China but would be regarded as authoritarian in the west.
People dislike China education should take their children to be educated elsewhere.
Each country has its own tradition. To every Chinese it is crazy to own guns and carry them to protests.
In the pandemic China in the last 249 days has 1 death. US for the same period has 407.023 Americans perished from Covid.
Math time table is a joke because in China we sing the time table as a song to help the kids to memorise. My two children were able to do addition, subtraction, multiplcation and division when in the UK school they were still concentrating on addition with two digits.
So don't sell US system to China please.

True, I feel like both systems can learn from eachother.I feel like the US education system can learn more discipline , hardworking and more focus on academics and increase the pressure a bit more in US. Not in a bad way because a tiny bit of pressure can be a good thing according to science because it is beneficial for motivation .
I also feel China’s education system can learn more about being more Open with opinions, ideas and more from Teachers and Students alike. And be less strict if the strictness if it is unnecessary. As well as putting a bit less pressure on just tests and focus on other stuff just as much as the GaoKao like grades, talents, goals and more

    • @gunsumwong3948
      @gunsumwong3948 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@gamegamer9523 Chinese education system like GaoKao has been in existence over thousands of years. It is the same system China has select people to run the central government.
There is such thing called culture in which the good things from the ancestors are observed and respected. Being disciphine and focus in life isn't restrictive. To the Chinese, Singaporeans, Malaysian, Japanese... western children are undisciplined and unruly.
When children are young Chinese people expect them to behave in their home. There is such thing called family education. Western culture is education is only taught in school and none of the parents' business. Well Chinese and south east Asians differ.

What she observed are all true to an extend. But one has to ask, why the heavy focus on flaws and criticism? If the book is for Chinese readers to reflect then okay. But the book is written for American readers to learn about Chinese education system. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to focus on the good and what can be taken away to better US education system? Just my 2cents.

I have the same impression. Obviously she wanted to use this book to introduce the American audiences about the values of Chinese education system but the first two parts of this book is all about idealizing American education and demonizing Chinese.

@@mermaidyu2000 yes I agree with you. I felt uncomfortable when she condescendingly said "the Chinese treat animals bad" and "the Chinese always speak loudly". COME ON, all my Chinese friends treat animals as their family members and they are not loud in the public at all. why did she say that? She self-called herself westerner and do not want to mention she has Chinese parents and ancestors. If she didn't like the rigorous Chinese educational system then just go back to the US, she just need to use this experience to finish her book and show her view to her western readers.

Like elsewhere educational outcomes depend on financial position of family. China is cert corrupt depending on relationship " Guanxi" and gifting Richer parents push their children to pass tests based on rote learning and extra curricular. Parents will often do the homework and boast my child does X hours homework per night. As a past teacher of post grads and staff I found them unable to think or know very little of life and world events. The Gaokao for university entrance is often the upper limit of their education Uny is all about having a rest. It was often joked amongst foreigners that you could ask students to memorise a phone book, those that wanted to work would accept this assignment. Can anyone recall scientific Nobel or Gold medal (maths ) winners?

102/150 is a 68%, even in America that's considered on the brink of failing, so how is it "not bad".

Thank you for this information. I am going to buy your book today! I teach online for VIpkid and it is great to learn about how students learn and what they are being taught. I find it interesting how the parents are required to be so involved in their child's learning. Sometimes other online teachers get upset when parents are sitting there in the online classroom and feeding the students all the answers of what to say, but I can see that it would be hard for them to step back when so much is expected of them in their child's education at school. Thank you!

Even when I was in elementary school, my father had told me learning is not such a vital thing in life while abilities are, such as all kinds of social skills including interpersonal communication, organizing group activities. But in Chinese nowadays society, to get an elegant and well-paid job, basing which you could have more choices and lead to a better and enviable life.
As the saying goes, deal with stuff after dealing with your personal moral quality.
I spent nearly all my primary school playing, and half of the junior high improving social abilities whereas the other half is learning, and after I got into senior high, I devoted myself into culture course dedicating to get admission of better universities.
We, children, average people can do nothing to modify the elite-selecting ladder, but according to the law of jungle, only creatures that are adapted to the world can go on living, we have to make adjustments to fit into the changing world, so just focusing on study is not the best way but the only.

As a Chinese myself who was born and spend 17 years live in China,I don’t think the schools had much of a positive influence on my Self-esteem or personality development.
When I was in school,I’m really into painting and music and all that kind of art stuff, but unfortunately, the ridiculous amount of pressure which created by schools,my parents and pretty much everyone else in my life, almost everyone believes going to a great university its the only way that you are going to get a descent job with a descent paycheck in order to make a descent living, and anyone who didn’t made their way into the university will be considered as “worthless loser”.And that’s exactly what I had experienced apart form the countless emotional abuses form schools and my parents, which finally makes me broken down and drop out of high school in 17.
I know its just my point of view but since I immigrate to Australia with my parents,I find out that there is actually another way to get a job,now I’m a high school dropout Election who earn six figures per year, which makes me feel proud about myself for first time and finally be able to have the time and space to enjoying my hobby.
Whenever I went visit my Psychologist doctor,I always had talked about those “unpleasant school days”in China, which didn’t actually give me a”happy childhood”.
I guess this is just one of the negative influence that the Chinese education system can caused to a student’s mental health.

Well the PISA test does not say much about the Chinese education system since, PISA is an national test, where the other countries take the test and look at the average score, in 2009, and 2012 the PISA test score result China had, was from the richest and best educated province in China, Shanghai. As you said that PISA showed that Shanghai was nr 1, and that is true. That did not mean that they are the best, since other places could had been better around the world. While in 2018, China chose to represent the whole country with 4 provinces, Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. and in 2015 it was Jiangsu, Guangdong, Beijing, and Shanghai. And the score idediatly felt from a 580 average score to 512. I am writing a paper on the Chinese education system percived by the outside world. I am a student at 复旦大学 And I have to listen to 2009 and 2012, a lot. It even influenced the politics in Denmark, that the school kids and teachers now have longer days with more homework.

They also don’t have to put up with racial diversity either. That’s a major problem. Whites were at their best when they didn’t have to care about other races getting in their way.
