this exact video used to play on my myspace page when i was in the grips of smack addiction. the lyrics really spoke to me then. being clean for over ten years now this video still gives me the chills. R.I.P. to my friends who did not make it.
I'm rectracting what I said several months ago that this song may have been about Jean Genet, as somebody else suggested about a year ago. I've been listening to all of the songs on this album pretty closely recently, and this one definitely isn't about him! JG spent ime in Spain but died in Paris and was buried in Morocco.
Yeah this comment is 5 years old, maybe you're dead, maybe you're living a prosperous simple life in the middle of a forest far away from an internet connection. However, God Bless the Swans!
For anyone who cares you should give a listen to Harvey Milk. One of my favorites: "The Anvil Will Fall" incorporates more of a baroque influence, while "The Live Long Day" and F.T.S.P incorporate thier heavier riffs. "The Lord's Prayer" is more mellow and intimate piece. Like Swans - Harvey Milk incorporated folk type elements(Leonard Cohen) with harder grunge metal type elements.
I think so, as a double- cd on Yong God Records. Contains Young God, Cop,Greed and Holy Money. I guess the ep you mean is impossible to find. And, by the way, Children of God is also a favourite. Forgot that the last time.
wow I didn't know people knew clint; there's a song by the HH about Clint Steele called "Information to minimize victimization" including the line "Clint Steele Stole" hee hee
@marchvein1 All I know about the Swans Final Tour show, that I saw, hear in Seattle, I didn't hear it. I heard pretty much of what they did, during the Final Tour, on the Swans Are Dead set, and some live recordings, available at the Swans site.
@swans1997 Well, legend has it, if you'd care to read their entry on Wikipedia, that SWANS in their early days were indeed influenced by Jean Genet. Genet spent time in jail, as did Michael Gira. And he had a troubled upbringing, as did Gira, by his own admission. So I wouldn't rule out the Genet explanation of this song outright.
@swans1997 Well, Pasco did say it was a 'hazy' recollection. Whether the absinthe drinker story is true or not, whatever, but I wouldn't be surprised if at least one Gira's songs was about Genet. I haven't read any of his stuff either, but I saw a play he'd written recently, and it was pretty intense stuff. Must delve in more deeply.
@denverjohncdalby yeah, haven't seen the guy around, who angrily posted that lil' message about the tune being about ol' JG. Never read him myself, but I've been enjoying the various explanations posted about the concept of this tune.
@zackjmack this song is in no way a tribute to Jean Genet. He was a Parisian who died in Paris, at the ripe old age of 76. He was a hooligan in his younger days, but it's not about him, trust me...
@spuffchops70 Genet, or not, I don't listen to music and wonder where the artist got his inspiration for a tune he/she came up with. I like to come up with my own ideas about it really. I hardly pay attention to the lyrics anyway, I listen to ALL of what is going on in the song. The lyrics are really second for me. I got into Swans, because they were sonically interesting to me.
Which ep do you mean? I thought FILTH was their first records they released. By the way, my personal favourite swans album is GREED. Sometimes its COP, but theyre all great. Exept maybe some of the live stutt that came out when they were quitting as a band. Thanks in advance.
Although I find the prospect that this was Jean Genet inspired fascinating, it was a far more direct inspiration according to Michael Gira's explanation; Supposedly, it is about an Actualist friend of his who was also an absinthe drinker / addict (After drinking tons of fluid ounces of this stuff, I think the term alcoholic is just as apt). I think there is definitely humor in its exceedingly honest sadness, but, most of all it is just beautifully SAD.
@zackjmack Querelle is quiet a good book, I read it in German, and I also like Filth very much, but never woud I say that I would have been able to find out about a straight connections between works of literature and music by only listening to a song. For that you got to have background information or a huge knowledge about the works in question. Therefor your enthusiasm is a bit funny to me. I appreciate your love of arts, but don't you think that you expect a litte bit too much?
Thanks for posting this and the other Swans live vids. It's always nice to see actually new stuff that hasn't been uploaded a bunch of times. Do you know when/where these were recorded?
@spuffchops70 HA Ha I'm not ruling out anything and nor have I ruled out anything, in regards to the topic of this tune. Andrewpasco, posted several months ago, about, what Gira, personally told him, what this tune was about, at a show. I never read any Genet, so, I don't think I'm qualified to argue on the matter, but I think the Gira/Andrewpasco explanation, sounds like the truth. You might want to check that item out.
I haven't read Genet yet. I know Gira bases some of his lyrics on books and such, I tend to read more history than fiction, but what Genet book is this from?
@zackjmack Don't know where the inspiration for this song came from, but it was most CERTAINLY NOT for Jean Genet. He was a Parisian that dies IN PARIS at the age of 76. Not in Spain, not with any knife in his back, Think again...
You dont get it. Why does he have to be nice to you? you are a human, a living creature. When you are that depressed you no longer give a shit about being "nice" or crap like manners. You could never understand someone like Gira, and thank your god for that. Im probaly missing Hank III to see him in Ballard, well worth it
why is it that the English have more of our songs then we do? Everytime I go to youtube to listen to something different even if it's American another freak'n redcoat has loaden it first.
so hard to find the original tracks that Greed was made from; a shame they ruined Money is Flesh and won't release the original anymore - waaay better than the remix
Yeah, that may be so. I've talked with him at shows and he can be a bit dicy ha ha. Although, he has more right to be arrogant than some of these inept attitude poseurs in the rock scenes.
I don't find Gira to be one of those mopey "I am sooooo utterly depressed" types at all. That's for the overly obsessed goth types, ha ha.I find a lot of humor in his music and with Swans, but that's just me, but, music is open to interpretation, isn't it?
No fancy electronics to 'pretty'' up the music and fix his voice... it is beautiful, his voice is true to the soul... where did this go? Oh yah, it has been crushed by the psychopathic corporate elite that have no creativity... only empty souls of death.
Well, check out their other stuff. There's more to this band than this. Maybe the See No More clip I uploaded might appeal to you and there's tons others people have uploaded, if not, then, go shit on yourself.

I made it.

Man, those guys have some range. Stripped down sludgy doom metal, rough post-punk and a peaceful folk ballad?! Thanks for putting this stuff up.
LMAO THE DRUMMER DANCING IN THE BACK
amazing
His voice goes along so well with the lyrics, the song wouldn't be the same without. Beautiful!
Damn, I just stubmled upon Swans a day ago and I am fascinated. I believe them, I feel it is straight from the heart.
The beauty of this song is almost too powerful to take in.
I love Swans. I love Michael. I love Jarboe. This IS the most amazing band to ever exist.
Thank you good sir for uploading this. Recently I heard Michael sang this song in his solo concert in Waraw Brooklyn. It still brought me to tears.
ive also seen m gira perform this one in oslo. during the Final Tour... Glad i had the oppertunity, money and time ;)))

" really great way to wake up this morning...thanx "
this song is so power full wow
love the swans and m.gira
@swans1997 I don't pay attention to lyrics that much myself. Just intrigued by the mythology that's surfacing here. Great posting of a great song!
Pieknie pieknie!
The good old days!
ooh, THE BEAUTY!!!!!!!
HA HA good one. I thought Gira modeled his voice after Johnny Cash but maybe he's a big Rocky fan too huh? AAAAADRIAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
I looked this song up because I heard a Dresden Dolls cover of it, and wow, I think that I've just found another band I really like!
what a greatness !
awesome ! great to see
God damn the swans!
Yeah this comment is 5 years old, maybe you're dead, maybe you're living a prosperous simple life in the middle of a forest far away from an internet connection. However, God Bless the Swans!

Well, we sacrifice the warmth vinyl offers for convenient compression... but yes, the access alone is worth the transition.
Cheers!

reminds me of the Dubliners. very low voice would sound nice in a pub

Listen to the words 100 times in a row and you will understand.
@andrewpasco well, there goes the Jean Genet explanation.
I miss the days when bands were filmed using potatos

or yeah, Rambo "I'm you're worst niiightmaree."
mmm mmm good
yes
I don't know if that should be taken as a compliment or an insult. Gira rulz over that hack Steele.
Alright! One for the Americans!
so fucking amazing
@jesusmakeslove Fine, there's plenty of other music to blow your brains out over. Whatever floats your boat. Thanks for stopping by.

considered one of their best? really? wow I consider it to be their worst song. It is certainly not typical of them, and for me it doesnt work
