I think the reason it’s so much is someone had a “prototype” and then everyone else thought they had the prototype too so they priced it the same. I’ve seen stuff like that happen in other communities like mlp and other resellers
I remember looking for a certain pony once and saw that they jacked up the price. They all said prototype and just by the photos I saw 90% of them were not even a prototype version of it. They probably saw the same 2 listings of the prototype version and thought they could sell theirs at that price...
I was upset because I wanted it and couldn't afford to spend a lot on a pony that is worth at most $10...
I have the pony now but I was upset that I couldn't have gotten it sooner because of this. It was a Applejack from Friendship is Magic.
The prototype of it has bright yellow hair and a black neck plug... It was obvious that people were trying to scam someone because there's very obvious differences that could be seen from a mile away... The difference between the hair colour is the most obvious difference..
The one I was trying to get wasn't the prototype. It was another applejack they stopped selling in stores... I eventually got it when my mom bought someone's daughter's entire collection after she stopped liking it.
Fortunately all the listings disappeared a week later...
That's kinda what happened with the black diamond Disney VHS tapes. People jack up the prices of the black diamond tapes thinking that they are rare and collectable, when they're actually kinda common. IDK how the misconception of Black Diakond tapes being rare started.
It reminds me of how Mimic (a G1 My Little Pony) is touted as being super rare and regularly goes for over $100, due to claims that only a thousand or so of her were made.
In reality, she's supposedly no more rare than the other ponies released in that particular set, who were all given normal releases. It's all this mystery surrounding her, however, that makes her sought after as a result. Manufactured rarity/hype is super common in collectibles.

Something like this happened with an old disney tape. One person overpriced it, someone misinformed bought it, so everyone else with that tape thought it was worth the hundreds of dollars it was being sold for, and sold there's for that price as well.
I'm curious if that's what's occuring with the furby community. NIB Wizards and Angels have shot up in price, making them bit too expensive for me to get ahold of... even with a stimulus check.
Cross stitch community too. If somebody has an out of print chart not listed on the site, they automatically overprice it by a lot. All because of Teresa Wentzler and her dragons.

Yeah, the Disney black diamond edition VHS were being listed for hundreds sometimes thousands of dollars. I felt so bad for my Mom. She got all excited because we had a few. Then I had to tell her they aren't actually worth that much.

They set their pricing based on demand, availability, and origin of item. It's not a mistake, it's a popularity thing. Also if i am not mistaken that cat and the other magic motion pets were recalled because of the tiny magnet getting swallowed.. Yeah that's gonna cost more than most.

Conspiracy theory : He's tired of all the torment and is infiltrating people's eBay accounts, he takes pictures of himself in various locations (possibly the peoples homes?!) and saying he's rare. He doesn't mean harm but because of his looks (and possible breaking and entering) people are alarmed by him. He wants someone to buy him and give him a good home and if someone doesn't he might get angry.... Who knows where he'll show up next. Lock your doors. He's waiting.

This happens a lot in other collectibles as well. Someone who doesn't know, or is intentionally trying to manipulate the market, lists it up for a high price. Then other people who have that same item see it and see that it's listed at a high price. They then think that it's worth that much and list theirs at that price as well. The new comers then start watching the original item and other similar items to see if it really sells at that price.
This is nothing new. The important take away from this is that just because it's listed at that price doesn't make it that price. I can list up a tube of tooth paste for $1000, but that doesn't make it worth $1000

There was a book I read back in middle school where something similar to this happened in it. The main character made a website to adopt pets that owners can't take care of anymore, but there were impossibly expensive listings and none of them were getting adopted. Turns out, a mafia was using the website for illegal horse race bidding.
This pet is from the pink "Get better Centre". I can't fathom it being actually sold for that price lol.
This is a very intresting video but terrifying at the same time. I'm gonna try to do some research on it because for some reason I want to know why there are so many yellow motion cats at such a high price. If I find anything I'll let you know but I totally agree with you, that is horrifying how there are so many of the yellow motion cats.

I’m sure someone else has said this but when you make a listing on Ebay it gives you recommendations as to what you should price it as and even what you should title the listing as based on other sellers.(even if there’s only one other person selling the item) So what happened is one person listed it for a whopping $250 and everyone else was like “oh it must be worth something” and started some wild chain reaction/domino effect lol. I’ve seen this with Monster High Dolls too, it happens. :D

I’ve noticed this in a lot of communities. Once one goes up for a lot of money ALL of them go up for a lot of money. Then all of them start to be overpriced even if they’re common or their paint is scuffed badly. :/ eBay is one of the worst places to shop for collectibles IMO

This is why it’s always important to do research 😩
As an eBay seller, what we will do is that we look up the product right there on eBay and it will give you the option to “sell one like this”, which why all the details look the same. The only things that don’t carry over are the photos, descriptions, and prices. Why these LPS are priced so high, I have no clue.
This is how Doll collectors have felt for the past 10 years. Someone will post a certain item for a ridiculous amount, then other people listing the item looking for price references will follow in suit. Then some collector with money burning a hole in their pocket will pay that crazy amount, because they have to have it, in return jacking the price for all other listings of that same item. This recently happened with Bratz dolls, even before the whole resurgence in popularity. I bought a Sasha doll for $35, and one like it sold recently for $90.

Is this weird and oddly strange this pet keeps popping up? Yes. Will I be investigating to see what's going on and possibly getting cursed in the process? Also yes
I'm part of the model horse community and when we see multiple listings of the same horse for an increased price, that means there was one piece that sold around that price and now everyone tries to sell the same horse for that price (Most of the time the models are limited in this case, so supply and demand applies). I just checked the completed items/sold list for this LPS and couldn't find this piece sold for greater than 80 dollars (it was the gray model) and it doesn't sound like this piece was very rare based on your video lol If no one buys the little guy, the price will probably go down.. Just a weird situation. I'll have to stay updated on his eBay listings out of my curiosity! I had many LPS Pieces in 2005/2006, they were the cutest! Glad to see they're still getting the love they deserve :)
