Heat is the greatest film ever made. There was no doubt it would be number one. I'm glad Collateral made it to number two as I believe this too is also a top 50 greatest films of all time contender.
Heat and Collateral are definitely my two favorites. I love Last of the Mohicans, but I saw it as a kid and I didn't appreciate it until the last act of the movie, but loved the whole thing on repeat viewings. Ferrari did not connect with me as it felt like a good biopic for the story that it told, but it was a story I wasn't crazy about. Oh and I should say that I loved Manhunter - it's one of the best crime movies out there imo.

You're exactly right with Heat and Collateral both are brilliant. Both shot in LA. First time Pacino and De Niro were in the same movie. Both men in their prime and were believable. Best shoot out scene ever. Cruise was amazing in Collateral - he actually makes a great bad guy.

You lost all credibility when you could not find anything good to say about Last Of The Mohicans. Great performances of a classic story with a solid script, gorgeous cinematography, deft pacing and a superb soundtrack. Daniel Day Lewis’ Hawkeye vs. Wes Studi’s Magua is every bit as captivating as DeNiro vs Pacino in Heat.
Strange that all the comments on here don't seem to understand that rankings are completely subjective as I managed to grasp the concept of varying personal tastes since I was very small (I guess it's possible that many of them are very young). My personal top 5 would be: 1. Collateral 2. Heat 3. The Last of the Mohicans 4. The Insider 5. Thief
I started to watch Thief and felt not in the right headspace. I will definitely start it over with a fresh perspective now. And Collateral is a great movie.
Solid list but personally I've would have rated The Last of the Mohicans higher and Miami Vice lower. I was a teen when Miami Vice TV show was airing and it was absolutely magical. I've never seen a television show this cool therefore, I was expecting big things for the film adaptation much like LA Takedown with Heat (which I saw in theaters). Needless to say, I was disappointed with the film version of MV. The story lacked buildup to the climax and the antagonist was underwhelming. Overall, it was mediocre at best.

11:16 No, even after the last rewatch, its still anticlimactic creep. A Mashup of the serial material, and even not the One which i would rather watch. For a example a cinematic version of "Golden Triangle" or the "Prodigal Son" or a something out of "Sons and Lovers", i mean maybe a continuation. Another big criticism which i have about the moviei is, thats not "Miami Vice" the Movie but "Crockett and Tubs" as Title would be more a suitable. The Series always was about the whole squad, and i liked them All. In the movie, i think only Trudy was good, an the other characters hadn´t near the charme and chemistry from the series. The Most Dissapointment i had which the Movie Castillo, for obvious reasons.

OK, I could had had the guys tone down the coffee shop scene just a hair, as them acting all over themselves and each other is just a biiit too visible, but everything else in it held up brilliantly through approximately a zillion subsequent viewings. Jericho Mile also made an impression on me that has persisted through the years. It is fairly linear and straightforward, but effectively conveys a certain passion and longing.
Watching Heat again I think it's about 20 minutes too long. Some of the sub plots could have been eliminated or cut down IMO. Moves Collateral just slightly ahead for me because I don't think it has any wasted shots.

LA Takedown is an interesting watch/precursor to Heat but another (west coast) version of Miami Vice was not needed. The beginning of Takedown even shamelessly rips off the bedroom sequence of Manhunter with 'retired' cop Petersen in bed with wife (the 'hot' ocean and the soft, cool white sheets all subtext in the background). NO Way LA Takedown ranked higher than Ali and Last of the Mohicans (only Mohicans flaw is the perfect hair of Daniel Day Lewis: Where did he find the 18th century hair stylist?) If Ali is like a eulogy so be it but a well thought out eulogy can still have plenty to say. Ali movie does have plenty to say. It's Cassius Clay/Mohammad Ali over a 10 yr period with a recreation of one of the greatest fights in the history of the 'Sweet Science' mixing politics and more. I'm beginning to think Mann's Ali is extremely underrated because it is not a quick watch. But, Ali's life was far from a simple one. Miami Vice, also, was not that great a show. You can see the stylized cool (unintentionally) self parodying of Miami Vice creeping into LA Takedown. Manhunter had avoided that cool tough talking cliche 3 yrs earlier (and the cinematography in Mannhunter was just as good if not better than Vice too). Anyways, a shout out to Jericho Mile which I might have to argue was a better tv movie than Takedown. Amazing rep of prison life even with no swearing permitted in script. Peter Strauss as the protagonist (damaged though ... he was in prison for murder) always a consummate pro-actor, while Brian Dennehy does his bad guy inmate thing very well. I do need to see Collateral. Thanks for Thief reminder, too, and probably most impotantly, The Insider. Prime Video time.

I also don't agree with you that there's only shallow characters in the last of the Mohicans, but I think that's brought on by your preconceptions. If you enter a movie determined it's not for you, you're less likely to enjoy it. On the other hand I don't like most of the mob movies or heist movies I've seen. But I don't go into it expecting to dislike it. The movie has to have characters that resonate with you, on that point I agree. So I didn't really enjoy Heat, but I liked Collateral.

I don’t really like the 18th century as a time period for story’s. I just don’t find it interesting. But I would be willing to overlook that if the movie was still captivating. Luckily Johnny Depp far outranks Lawrence Tierney ('Dillinger' 1945) in looks and in acting skill. Have added it to be viewing list - worth a second bite.

Collateral is more than just a good film - it's a symphony of cinema. Cruise is mesmerising and Foxx the perfect foil.
It’s a brilliant film and is almost perfect. Heat is an 11/10 and Collateral is a 9.5/10!

I have mad respect for Barry Shabaka Henley, but I always thought Esai Morales would have been the right choice to play MV 2000's Castillo.

I am also not a fan of the Last of the Mohicans, its consistently ranked in the top 10 of movies, but i also thought the movie was extremely bland.
This review revealed why it didn't work - every character was distant, giving a wierd, detached, psuedo-documentary experience.
Bland? Maybe it's just not your type of movie although they hardly do films about The Seven Years War in the colonies.
