When the USSR collapsed, funding for the largest collection of pomegranate germplasm in the world disappeared. Rather than risk losing the plant collection and decades of research the director of the station contacted the director of the USDA equivalent in California. Ultimately over 100 varieties were ‘saved’ at the Wolfskill Germplasm repository near Winters, California by international cooperation between scientists. I currently grow Desertnyi and Parfianka pomegranates from this collection. I consider this story to be a triumph of science over politics.
