Thank you so much! I’ve had my pomegranate bush for 6+ years and never pruned it. It’s massive! I got over 100 pomegranates this year. But I will definitely be following your video to prune it
Thanks for stopping by. Pruning will keep the tree healthy, balanced and in-check. Get some leather forearm gardening gloves if you can. And wear eye protection. If your comfortable you may enjoy pruning the pomegranate as much as I do. Take care.
This is very helpful to us. We have two pomegranates that haven’t been pruned in two years so I have to prune inside and upside as they have gotten around 10 ft y’all. Wish me luck!
Let me say this to those watching this pruning video. He recommends, Felco Pruners and a Silky saw. These brands are the best of the best. A bit pricy but you’ll have forever. We have Felco pruners and loopers. Both have replaceable blades.
Your explanations and the nice photography showing where you were going to cut have been one of the most clear and detail that I have ever seen . That’s not an easy task. Your emphasis on skin protection and eye protection is right on target. Thank you so much, I have set a bookmark on this video for future reference, is that good. Thanks again
So excited to prune our trees. Moved into a house with several trees and not sure how to maintain them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. BTW, my chickens love pomegranates!
great video, thank you. We rent a house in San Diego with an ancient, unruly pom tree that hasn't been cared for in years, but still seems relatively healthy and produced a lot of fruit this past season. This instruction will come in very handy as I look to knock it back and make it a little more manageable and less "haunted house" haha.
We're in zone 7 and have a Russian variety more appropriate for our winters. First flowering was last year and after structural pruning today, we're hoping for a fruit or two this coming year. Really articulate and informative. Thank you.
I have a pomegranate tree planted in SE Georgia after 3 years it finally gave us a couple pieces of fruit one got knocked off by heavy rain . I loved this instruction because I had no idea that it had to be pruned it just looked like a big green bush to me and I didn’t research it. I am definitely going to prune it and one other video stared that we can take shoots off it and propagate them. Thanks a bunch for the tutorial
I got some pomegranate fruit the last two years on 4 different trees. My concern is disease control. How do you treat for diseases? I’m in SE Georgia also.
Great. It is the first time or I found the pomegranate pruning video, very informative and practical. I love my pomegranate plant, and really this video going to help me to prone my plant. Thank you
Thank you so much for a great video. Got 3yr old Pom tree & all 30 flowers are down. So distraught, but now well equipped on how to handle pruning & pollinat🎉ing the flowers to harvest fruits, fingers crossed. 🙏🙏 👏 👏.
I have seen that the first year branches will produce some fruits, but the fruits will be small. Therefore I pull off blossoms on first year branches so that more energy goes to the second year branch fruits. Second year branches will blossom earlier and so will produce larger fruits. I try to leave sufficient second year branches to produce a sufficient harvest. Many branches and a bushy tree will produce a lot of small fruits, many of which will not fully ripen. So I thin shoots and branches to get larger ripe fruits. I also remove small fruits and blossoms in mid July, as these fruits will not have time to ripen. I prune much the same as this expert recommends. I am going to follow his recommendation to open up the centers of the bushes. Thank you for this video which has good information.
On my pomegranate trees birds and squirrels destroyed 30% of the fruits. And yet I've got over 8 gallons of juice in 2022 from 4 bushes. It was hard fight, but I love the pomegranates!
i love a well kept pommegranate tree. Iv some pomme juice in the fridge right now. Btw i noticed the fruit showing since very early in the vid. I dont miss those ever. lol
Thanks for the pruning tips my tree this year looks terrible the branches are laying way down are full of fruit but the fruit is not ripening as other years before I know that part of the problem is we have never known how to prune it so we didn't. I hope the tree survives this year and we can feed and prune it this winter. Again thanks for the help.
Thankyou so much for your video! I’ve been looking for help as we received a young pomegranate tree last fall. It’s about 4’ tall now, So when do you first start pruning and fertilizing? We’ve been keeping this tree on our front sun porch throughout the year. We live in zone 9 in California and wondering when the best time to plant outdoors. Thank you for all your advise!
Спасибо. Уточните, пожалуйста, как Вы укорачиваете однолетние и многолетние приросты (ветки) граната для улучшения размера и качества плодов. Здоровья, удачи.
Thank you for your videos. Just moved into a new home and inherited a pomegranate tree, lime and lemon tress. They all seem to be doing poorly. Not sure if the prior owners neglected them with water or did not prune. The pomegranate tree does look crowded with leaves and branches. Already has plenty of pomegranate, however, they are not quite red in color. My neighbor’s trees are deep in red, while mine lack in color. Any thoughts on why?. I will try to prune myself this winter. Your video gave great tips. Appreciate it!
It is almost June now, and I only just discovered today that the "shrub" growing outside of my kitchen window is a pomegranate. The shape is very asymmetrical, and my inclination is to try to prune it (would be my first time pruning a tree/shrub), but I do not want to do it if it overall it would be bad for the tree. What do you advise? Wish I could show you some photos of it. I had no idea what it was upon moving into the house last November, but it did not look very robust at all, and I was totally surprised that it came back this Spring. It has not produced many blooms, though.
Interesting to see suckers growing outward at the ground. My tree's suckers grew almost straight up. Maybe a softball sized gap between the three I kept up to about 5 feet, then they fan out.
Thank you for the video. Question please... is there a maximum height for the pomegranate tree? I haven't trimmed mine ever. It produces fruit but is 10-12+ high. Thank you in advance...
Thank you for the video!🤩 Can I cut a dry branch during summer or I should wait and do this with the whole pruning activity in spring? Where exactly to cut it to not hurt the tree? 🌳
Thank you so much for this video. What variety of pom tree is yours? My pom is similar to yours but when I looked online, the other pom trees had 1 thick trunk which branched off into thinner branches.
Fwiw... i was able to start new saplings from wood cuttings last time I pruned. Air layering, from what I've read, has a higher success rate, but you don't want to do too many in one season. Growing the roots via air layering expends the host trees' resources.
Hello and thanks for your video, Let's assume our goal is the change the tree structure from the actual structure to a tall spindle structure. Will it be ok for this tree to take all the lims and keep one central leader ? will it give any fruits the first year ? Regards
Great video. Question: if the tree is over 10 foot tall (I am a new owner) I can trim the lower stuff per video, but what about higher stuff? I'm in a warmer climate, it will dip to night time low 40s/upper 30s and maybe lower once but shoot back up to lows of 50. I assume I just try to prune as soon after the lower temp?
Very helpful. I have a few questions though. The tree that you pruned, has it stated growing fruit? How old is it? Which state are your trees in? Do they need pruning every year? I am trying to grow two tree right now in Virginia. One is almost two years old and I haven’t pruned it yet. It’s doing well so far. Thanks
I have a pomegranate tree that's about 2 and a half feet tall. It's still very green, i need advice on how to take care of it through winter and in general.
I have grown my pomegranate from seed. It's about waist high. When should I start pruning it? I don't want to cut on it too early but I would also like it to grow properly to be able to provide fruit in the future.
We usually harvest in September. Last years crop ended up being refrigerated and ignored until thi April. The skin was shriveled up & dry, i was sad because of the missed deliciousness. On a whim, i cut one open. The fruit was perfect inside and sweeter than at harvest time. Unbelievable.
We are in Orange County CA. We acquired a property that has five very overgrown pomegranate trees that have not been touched in at least ten years! They've come back to life now that we have been watering them. No fertilizer. They have lightly colored fruit on the trees and the arils are pink. They are very sweet. Seems like a big job though. They are very tall. At least one and a half times the one you pruned. Any particular suggestions? I read they fruit on new growth. Would that alter how you prune them? Thank you. Great video! You make it look fun and easy. I suspect it may not actually be that way for me. I'll know in February!
It is June 1st and the growth is green and leafy, is it ok for me to start some of the Pruning now.. 6ft tall and they look like bushes not a trees. 30% ok for now? thank you.
I have a question for you. My 30 yr pomegranate tree has a big crop one year and then rests the following year with only about 20 fruits. I live in Santa Barbara, ca. Is this normal for this type of tree? I bought the house with the tree so I don’t know the variety. The productive years yield massive crops. I leave the unharvested fruits on tree as the birds enjoy the sweet fruit and one year a hummingbird made its nest in the gutted hard shell of the fruit. I was thrilled to have the old fruit repurposed for housing. My garden is a bit messy for the animals and birds.
I have got about five mature pomegranate trees in my front yard. They re so bushiness. The branches going in all directions. I pruned them two years ago and the next year I didn't get any fruits. So here is my questions: Is it ok to cut the tips of all branches around to prevent them from taking over? Also is it ok to to cut the crown of trees? they all becoming real too much tall.
Hi. I'm in South Africa. Now is late autumn just few days before winter. Zone 9b goes sometime to -4C but very few days. Day time temperatures in 20s. My pomegranate is full of flowers and young fruits. That tree start late flowering and then in the middle of summer in to the winter he start flowering like crazy. tree is in his 4th year. What should I do to force tree to start flowering in spring?
My plant is too young and there is new growth all over and none of them are growing thick and tree is falling to one side. Should I still try to trim a lot of it ?
I did not know you could use vinegar to sterilise garden secateurs, etc. I am so nervous about cutting on a tree/shrub for fear of doing irreprable harm. I once trimmed some Winter Green Boxwoods in the 1980s. I thought I was doing everything right, but it stunted their growth. They never grew up again. I traumatised both the boxwoods and myself!
How thorny is the Red Pomegranate? Is it safe to plant in a schoolyard? I am in Florida. We have afternoon showers all summer and winter is dry except for cold fronts bring rain. Any advice appreciated as I have been gifted a Pomegranate tree sapling and want it to be successful. Thanks.
I just moved into a new house and I think a tree in my yard is a pomegranate tree. I thought it was dead but woke up today to leaves! Is it too late to start pruning it?! Writing this on March 20th. It looks like it hasn’t been pruned in years!

Thanks so much. Just bought a house that has one large tree an 8 miniature pomegranate trees. Yummy
Wonderful!
Thanks for showing the proper way to prune the pom tree. I have a 2-year-old tree and can't wait for it to bear fruits.
I've never pruned a pomegranate tree. This was very helpful and I'll try it.
EXcellent tutorial video. Love the look of your garden. It is so lovely and peaceful. Thank you very much.
Easily the best site on pruning Pomegranate tree.🙏
Thank you so much for a great video. Got 3yr old Pom tree & all 30 flowers are down. So distraught, but now well equipped on how to handle pruning & pollinat🎉ing the flowers to harvest fruits, fingers crossed. 🙏🙏 👏 👏.
Best video I’ve seen on pruning pomegranate trees.
Great instruction. I just pruned mine a couple weeks ago.

First time watching you. Youre the only one that has very helpful information that i came across. Just hit subscribe. Great work and Thank you! 👍🏽
Love the pruning time. Great tips friend 😊

I have a wonderful pomegranate here in florida and I noticed a lot of crowding in the middle so when it is time I will do this. Thank you
Cheers!
Super clear video - thanks!
Thanks for teaching how to do pruning 😊
Another great and helpful video without the nonsense blah-blahs common in other vlogs. Thank you.
Спасибо.

Thankyou for sharing these helpful tips on pruning pomegranate. I'm.going to do this on my tree. Do I need to wait until its dormant I'm winter?

Thank you for the helpful video! I wish I looked this up before my tree started having leaves. What should I do with a few branches that are drooping?
I live in NW Arizona and have 4 trees/bushes I started from seed 4 years ago.
Great instructional video. I recently planted my 1 yr old tree in the ground in July this year , should I skip this yr on pruning?
Thanks for the nice tips you have given.
Absolutely beautiful 🌱
Good stuff as always. Thanks again!

Can I use those branch cutoffs to propagate new seedlings? What method of propagation to use: grafting or air layering ?

You can prune out the suckers anytime. Top prune when the tree is dormant just above an outward facing node for optimum tree health.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for stopping by : )
Very helpful. I have a few questions though. The tree that you pruned, has it stated growing fruit? How old is it? Which state are your trees in? Do they need pruning every year? I am trying to grow two tree right now in Virginia. One is almost two years old and I haven’t pruned it yet. It’s doing well so far. Thanks
He said in rhe video that there was fruit laying on the ground last year because of the very low branches he decided to cut out.
So essentially you want to leave the center hollow? I just bought my first pomegranate and want to make sure I do the right thing for the tree
Wearing safety clear glasses can be included also to use during pruning process.
I have a pomegranate tree that's about 2 and a half feet tall. It's still very green, i need advice on how to take care of it through winter and in general.

dont water it in winter at all

i will teach you prunning if you are wanted
I wished I watched this video before I completely pruned my tree, it looks so naked now. Will it recover?
Would I basically prune a peach tree the same way?
Hi from Austria! I habe a small tree that spends the Winter in my garage. How cold can it be to kepp the tree in the garden?
