Having lived on a boat for 10 years, you have to be ready for anything, I would include a long range capable rifle with as large a caliber that I can get my hands on, along with short range like his pump action shotgun etc. Overall muto bene good outcome. criminals are looking for a victim not a fight, generally.

i am ch. officer on merchant ship and most of my navigation was in that waters - real pirate boats of that area are low profile speed boats armed with two sometimes three 200 HP engines, very much faster than boat approached the yacht - they are shielded with few layers of iron plate armor on the bow with machine gun slots to protect their crew, they are also with no exception armed with a heavy machine gun and every crew member with kalashnikov machine gun machetes and often handguns - from much far than the distance of about 100 m from where man shot the warning shots pirates would already shut warning bursts to stop the yacht - this kind of slow vacation boats armed with one shotgun and box of cartridges for them is a sitting duck and have no chance against them - relation of this boat against real pirate boat of that area is of a fat rat against a hungry tiger - boat approached that yacht probably was a fishing boat trying to sell few fishes or just was interesting to approach the yacht to see her from nearer - if that was a pirate boat they would for sure answer the fire most probably kill everyone ransack the boat and sunk it - anyway what kind of pirats run away when stupid Italian tourist shoot few rounds from a toy shoot gun

In a lot of situations, it doesn't really have to be. Most of these bandits are just thieves and nobody, AK or not, wants to get shot at with a rifle. Maybe if they were desperate enough.

More than likely they were fisherman wanting to sell or trade their fish for supplies, which is more common happenings than pirates.

That was probably the only on-board weapon he had. My guess is he had limited experience if any. Possibly whatever country he sailed from, that's all he could legally have. Gotta give him credit for standing up to them. Probably the only reason they didn't zap him with AK fire is because hostages are of no use dead. Though that doesn't mean that they wouldn't just kill them and pillage and sink the vessel.
