- Got in a nice speed queen dryer and I was wrong again it wasn’t the usual broke wire going to the element. It has a bad timer that is discontinued and NLA. But we check it all and disassemble it. Thanks for watching and diy at your own risk. #diy #appliances #speedqueen

Bummer, had the aame thing happen to me on a speed queen i replaced the heating element, belt, and wheels on. At least i can return the parts on amazon and buy a new dryer.
@@abmasta7777 yeah apparently the parts are becoming NLA (no longer available) faster now days. That’s not cool speed queen. Thanks for watching.
I have a speed queen dryer that does not heat intermittently. There are times when it starts up and the heat works and other times where it starts and there is no heat. In these cases, I will shut it off and then turn the timer dial a few times and the heat will start working after I restart it. At other times this doesn't work right away but eventually shutting it off, turning dial, starting again will cause the heat to come on again. I would think that if it was the heating element or fuse that the heat would never come on. Does this suggest that the timer could be the cause?
@@claudiofratarcangeli4111 yes intermittent problems can point to the timer. But always look for that loose connection on the wires at the element. And also on the back where the cord bolts on and also loose connections in the receptacle on the wall too. Eliminate all other possibilities first. 👍
@@LAapplianceguy The thick red wire connecting the timer to the fabric selector has significant corrosion on the timer end. There is also corrosion on the connector where wire attaches to timer. I have been able to find the entire wire assembly online for about $170. Do you know if it is possible to buy an individual wire?
@@claudiofratarcangeli4111 I would reterminate the end of the wire or fix the wire end and see if that fixes the problem. But if the terminal is hot or corroded it could possibly be the same inside of the switch. But yes definitely fix the terminals first. Atleast that’s what o would do before ordering a whole harness. 👍
To anyone else with this exact dryer finding out the 511150 timer on their beloved older Speed Queen is discontinued and having no luck finding a replacement- I was in the same boat last week. I recently got a 505474P timer kit for a Maytag and it has almost the same set of contacts. I installed it in my Speed Queen and it works well, however the sectors on the dial are different and you lose the 'extend tumble' feature. Maybe other timers in that generation of Maytags will work better in this dryer. I guess we'll see.
@@311wasaninsidejob FANTASTIC! I will have to try this next time I get a chance. Thank you for that tip! 👍
How are you testing any of that stuff plugged in it's going to read through and test good you need to unplug whatever component your testing
@@BigRooster616 true I usually remove Atleast one wire. Sometimes I am slacking. Thanks for keeping me on my toes
Hi boss can you show us how to desassemble speed queen timer switch, thanks s lot it is a big help for me..
@@leodelapena8019 next time I get one in I’ll give it a shot! Thanks 👍
I have the same problem. Timer (part #505797) is discontinued. This is just planned obsolescence - a business decision by Speed Queen. Just remember, you paid a premium for these shady tactics.
@@JustinBelanger-vm2rt right I don’t like that. Speed queen parts used to be available for 30years. Why are they becoming discontinued so fast all the sudden!
I have a dryer with this timer as well unfortunately. The wire between L1 on the fabric selector and H on the timer is broken and melted at the H end. There is no continuity between L2 and H terminals on the timer, so I assume that part of the timer is broken. So is the quick and dirty connection to get heat connecting the L2 from the terminal block to the L1 on the fabric selector? I am thinking of putting in a switch between those 2 so at least I could get heat/no heat.
@@booboodaddy that is a pretty good idea. It’s worth a shot right!
Same problem with burned H end. And same frustration at parts being discontinued.
Did you have luck with a work-around?
Looks like there are some conversion kits sold to update the timer but not specifically for this model. Someone could rewire this I’m sure but I don’t want to burn the house down.
@ yeah I don’t like messing to much with heating components like that. I haven’t found a work around yet but I bet there is a way to get around this.
@@jaygrow2207 I ended up making a new wire to reconnect L1 to H. I think my evaluation of a dead timer was premature and my continuity test between the points on the timer wasn't valid. After plugging in the new wire everything is back again. I spoke with some smarter electronics hackers and they thought it would not be too difficult to recreate a timer with digital relays and a chip for $100 in parts. I also contacted the guy on ebay that rebuilds whirlpool timers but he was not interested in working on my speed queen timer.
@@booboodaddythanks! Unfortunately I ended up selling for parts and buying a new one. I’m sure someone with an elec background could rewire or rebuild the switch but not in the timeline I’d need a new dryer in. Good luck
So the dryer is junk because of a discontinued timer piece?
@@jasonmoore7301 sadly yes none of our distributors had one. I am not sure how to rebuild these timers. One day I’ll try and break one of these styles down and see if I can fix it. But I just parted it out in the end
@@LAapplianceguy Thanks for the video and reply! Had to replace my 10 year old dryer for this exact reason. The place I got it from, which is a speed queen dealer, was completely shocked upon finding out about the issue.
@@jasonmoore7301 no problem. Yes I was pretty shocked too. Speed queens have their own little problems but not usually timers. Hey anything can happen though. 👍
We have a dryer that has this issue and is only eight years old. These are supposed to last 25 years as they aren’t the modern junk ones. It would suck if we have to buy a new dryer because they don’t make a timer. Absolutely pathetic😡Even Whirlpool still makes parts for their direct drive machines.
@@applianceman6009 right! I have been hearing about parts becoming NLA quickly for the new speed queens like this. Kinda odd if you ask me. Thanks for sharing. And thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. 👍
I took the top off, and one of the timer wires was burned near the terminal, and that contact was also burned. The dryer was intermittently heating and isn’t at all now. Is the timer shot, or can I file the contacts down on the timer and trim the wire?
@ well it’s likely the contact inside the timer is burned a little too. But I would clean the terminal on the timer up and reterminate the wire for a good solid connection and see if that helps any. It’s worth a shot. Hope that helps.
What would cause the timer contact to burn? It happened after eight years. It was the contact where the red wire is, and that probably is the heating element wire. I also got no continuity in the ceramic resistor on the timer when testing with my meter.
@ hot contact or connection. Yeah the thicker gauge wires is the element circuit.
