    Obviously, the people who spoke negatively of these monk has no clue what "Martial Arts" means. Let me enlighten you if you are ignorant and don't understand what the video is about. These are VERY disciplined Martial Artists, who spent their entire life studying the art and the way of life as a Monk. Not anybody can walk in the Temple and be accepted. The video is for demonstrating and fun for people to watch. But, the techniques are real. They have used the Art of Shaolin to defend the Temple and helped the needed thousands of years ago. If they demonstrate all the serious techniques, it wouldn't be as fun and enjoyable for people watching. So they mix it with gymnastic and high flying to make the demo fun to watch. But, if you know anything about Martial Arts, their techniques are flawless and unbelievable. These guys can do some internal damage to human organs if they strike you. I've seen their REAL demo in real life in China. They can kill a full grown Bull with a 1-inch punch to the head. Amazing...I've seen a monk headbutt a Bull and knock the Bull out. Didn't kill it, but it went down. Again, this demo I saw was in China, in 1996. They can't do it here in the USA because they don't want Animal Rights people complaining but it's ok in China and anywhere else. The monks are TRUE Martial Artists. Not only they study the Art but required to live by it. It's the way of life for them. Not like Martial Artists today. They study for an hour or two then goes home. These guys eat, sleep, pray, and lived by the Art of conduct. They are the MOST discipline human beings I see in my 45 years lifetime.

      yep...that is what the myth says, yeah.
      but the truth is, what you see is not shaolin, nor martial arts..it is acrobatics.
      take a look at wushu competitons and you will more similiarities with western gymnastics than in any martial arts...shaolin today is nothing but wushu.
      the chinese goverment destroyed shaolin and all its practioners some sixty years ago..and then restored the monastery, installed a wushu grandmaster, made it into a tourist centre and got good, solid economical benefits.
      they call themselfs shaolin, but what they do is not connected to the shaolin of the old, of the myths or of the martial arts...it is wushu, it is gymnastics..today, it is all it is.

      Timothy Price aye...cant stand the hype.
      Ooh..they jump high and do amazing splits, they must be awesome warriors!
      European ballet dancers do the same..can they fight? Propably better than most...but a boxer would crush both shaolin and ballet dancer.

    • @PatrickBateman1987

      shaolin monks are non-violent.

    • @petrihaikio7002
      @petrihaikio7002 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Timothy Price define violence.
      is boxing violence since it includes full contact punching and wins by knocking out people?
      Is Jiu Jitsu violence as it is about twisting peoples wrists and joints to force a submission through pain?
      Maybe the Shaolin monks do not practise this form of violence, i can accept that...but, if a boxer would not fight other boxers, if a wrestler did not wrestle other wrestlers, how good fighters would they be when they would be attacked on the streets?
      how good?...very, very hard to tell, but we can be very certain that they would be far worse fighters than those who compete full contact against eachother.
      Shaolin, just as almost all forms of Kung fu completely lack sparring and realistic fighting against resisting opponents...are they good fighters?, maybe, maybe not...but those jumping splits and tiger stances just fail to impress me in any other ways than as pure gymnastics.

      yep. that's why olympic grade wrestling take-downs isn't going to work on shaolin monks. for one thing, wrestlers aren't going to be comfortable "fighting" on concrete grounds. second, shaolin monks are too fast, and can go low...so low in fact a wrestling won't know how perform their to takedowns...plus let's not talk about the shaolin monk's attack.

    • @deeheych1101

      LOL and thats about as relevant as saying "Flight attendants aren't as good at flying as fighter pilots"... Grappling isnt actual fighting you are a moron.
      In addition because all nations participate in the Olympics, you are totally in left field with your comment and for someone to suggested that Asians are physically superior is laughable.
      put anyone through the same training and they will be able to accomplish the same thing, well anybody but you probably lol

    • @DDooMRooMM
      @DDooMRooMM 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it's Asians that are physically superior but definitely monks are. At least superior to me. And I don't think it has anything to do with race or nationality as much is has to do with these guys have been training their entire lives. At least that's my input. Anyone can get there. Just takes the right amount of work to get to it.

      +The Regular Man Actually most Americans rarely talk about people from other countries, and would not know enough to make negative comments about them. By and large, most of the negative comments and stereotyping is made by people from other countries and directed at Americans. These are usually not criticisms on American foreign policy, but culturally oriented. I've heard from many people who take trips overseas who have recounted that people in others countries often have no shame in saying negative things about American culture (whether true or otherwise) to their face, and this is behavior that most Americans would never subject a foreign visitor to. We would consider such behavior rude.

    • @SepherStar
      @SepherStar 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The Regular Man I hear that Russians currently think Americans are the spawn of Satan and retailers are putting American flag door mats outside of their shops for people to wipe their feet on. Again, most Americans have no idea that Russians have this animosity towards them. And what's more concerning is the reasons most Russians give for their animosity...which range from silly (one guy questioned hated American because we legalized gay marriage, even though we were not the first country to do so), to the out right paranoid (some Russians seem to think the US is out to get Russia and wants to bring Russia down, and so blame Americans for all of Russia's economic woes). It's insane being Russia is really not a focus of the United States at this moment, and Russia has had economic woes for centuries....just like every other country, America included. If you want my opinion, I think Russians just perceive themselves as the underdog who constantly has try to make itself as good as it perceives America perceives itself. But in doing this, they are underestimating Russia and over estimating America. I think Russia needs to be more secure with itself and recognize that no one thinks it isn't a world power.

      Hoverbot1TV I have trained at Shaolin and Tago.. I know what is real and what is proformance art. Like I said the kids train harder than MMA. they are skilled. but they are taught NO Traditional offensive Skills. Unless you train as a Body guard at Tago. and some do practice Sanda, some of the Demo Monks like to fight so they do it behind the Training center on their own. You need to understand what your learning. Most of the Kids have great intentions. I'm only saying if your looking for the True Shaolin System, you will not learn it at Shaolin Temple. Unless a master likes you and teaches you something he picked up. or was passed down.

    For those who don't "see martial arts" here.
    Remember that martial arts are NOT about fighting. Especially not kung fu.
    It's not a coincidence that martial arts have their origins within monasteries. It is a way to learn to control your body completely and become one with yourself.
    A relative simple way to find peace and stop thinking about past or future as it concentrates on the present, where we actually live.
    And the point is, that when you have absolute control over your body and movement, it is just the logical consequence that you're a better "fighter".
    Yet still the origin of these "combat skills" have nothing to do with combat, but with inner peace, wich is extremely ironic.
    Yet people without control over emotions like anger are worse fighters than just calm people.
    This though has nothing to do with martial arts themselves or religion. It's just that anger and rage shoot adrenaline into your body wich disables you ability to be reasonable and it makes you overestimate yourself.
    People who think martial arts is about fast fighting and only about this, have not understood that the fighting skill is not the main interest of a martial "artist".

    I remember reading an article by a shaolin master that, a lot of these acrobatics you see aren't really a traditional shaolin Kung Fu, its a modernised version, kind of sports form. I think he said something along the lines of, they had to do that because communist party didn't want people to learn traditional Kung Fu because techniques are actually very dangerous and didn't wanted it to be used against the party.

    the point it. kung fu is art. i dont think street fighter can even touch well trained monk. but would monk ever use his deadly moves? no ofcourse not. martial art. its art. and fighting only when there is no other option. they found piece within their mind. they are not driven by money, anger, hatred like those you watch on tv. ufc etc. no need to proteins and steroids and building yourself to look like pile of meat. instead they push limits of their body further than anyone. show some respect for those who achieved self control both body and mind that most of us would never be able to

      It's the way we spend our day. That's the only difference between shaolin and "average" people: it's how we spend our day. The "average" person has so much potential! In the few minutes that people spend standing around in line waiting for something, they could be balancing on one leg, doing squats, etc. There are so many options! :)

They teach discipline, respect, accountability, sacrifice, hard work ethic, humbleness, and building relationships by teaching and learning from each other. UFC fighters would DESTROY these guys, as MMA's main focus is to be the best fighter instead of focusing directly on the principles and values of the art.

    While everyone performed have done a wonderful display of Shaolin kung fu, one particular talent displayed is pure Indian originated Yoga postures which I have witnessed in my teens in India and in particular Tamilnadu. At that time, some 25 years back, 5 out 1 village in India had a yoga practitioner, doing these postures. It is curious and we could very well say , Shaolin got this particular Yoga postures and Varma (108 vital poiints in body) technique from India.

    • @FreshAsianSwagg
      @FreshAsianSwagg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That isnt the point of this video. The point is, they can go through so much pain and beating themselves up that in an actual fight while you are throwing punches and trying to cause thus pain, they cannot accept it nor feel the pain. Their body rejects it. You cannot harm them in a fight. So even if they cant fight, after 3 hours of you swinging and them not being able to feel your swing, you will lose. They will win, as they wont get tired aswell. It's an art that has been lost for years, dwindling down your enemy, chasing them through every narrow creek, and etc. This was even used in The Art Of War back when you needed to know the art. These days this has been lost has it isnt needed, specially the art of war. With all these ranged ballistic weapons, you dont need to learn the art.

  • @marl310381

    I have been practising Shaolin Gong Fu (Kung Fu) for over 13 years and have had the great experience to train at Shaolin for one year. I'd like to share some points that could provide a better context about Shaolin Gong Gu and this video. First of all, this is a PERFORMANCE of the Shaolin Temple performance team conformed mainly by monk's disciples. The purpose of this performance is to show something attractive to the visitors. The person who has spent some time in China knows that any Chinese has some of sales-man in the genes. If you want to have a wider understanding of why Shaolin Temple has a performance team I suggest you to research about Shaolin Temple history and Chinese Cultural Revolution, this will give you a more objective judgment.
    Second, Gong Fu is not just break dance, remember this is a performance. Gong Fu is a martial art, in other words an art of war. The characters Gong means work/task and Fu well done, thus can be translated as "work well done". There are many small movements of several parts of the body that is not possible to see in this video, even though when you see a live performance there will be many imperceptible small things for most of the people, like in any other art.

      Real Shaolin Kung Fu can kill, with bones that are harder than the Muay Thai fighters in addition to their speed makes them walking deadly weapons. They aren't allowed to fight for sport nor would they, this is just a performance they do to welcome tourists. I've stayed with Shaolin monks and this is their way of showing what they can do with their body without fighting, it's for entertainment nothing more. They are only allowed to fight in self defense but I have to say sparring with one shows what they're really capable of.

    • @msiley
      @msiley 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      1. this is more like modern wushu not shaolin kung fu. Actual northern shaolin kung fu is not very flashy and
      would be kinda boring to most audiences. I've studied both.
      2. jumping around with flashy movements and fighting are 2 different things.
      I trained in traditional and modern wushu for about 13 years I've been to China 2x and have trained there. Most people can't fight. I remember asking a high level instructor (like national wushu champion in some event) about the application of some movement and he had no idea. He just made something up on the spot that made no sense.
      Then I learned Muay Thai and BJJ and it was a game changer for me. In most chinese martial arts schools you spend 95% of your time learning movements and doing forms/kata
      and 5% or less on application and sparring. It's just the opposite
      with MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ, etc. You apply things constantly and spar against an unwilling opponent.
      I'm not saying this stuff couldn't work... San shou is the application of chinese martial arts to some extent.
      But like I said most of the time you aren't learning to defend yourself or fight. And this whole idea of
      "the techniques are too deadly for the ring" is nonsense. All those monks you see flipping around on this
      video would be crushed by the average BJJ blue belt. If you can't adjust your techniques for sparring
      then you've never learned to use them under pressure. Which is pretty much the same as never really learning them.

    The stupidity in these comments baffles me. Most people compare kung fu monks with ufc fighters. Kung fu is not a fighting method per se, is actually skill in a specific fighting method or martial art (ex: shaolin kung fu, wing chun etc). So the more skill you have, the more advanced in kung fu you become in that specific method. To compare a monk to a ufc fighter would be dumb because monks are so skilled that an UFC fighter won't be able to even touch them on offensive. On defensive, that's another story. Monks are so fast on offensive that an UFC fighter won't be able to defend himself. Not even a very skilled martial artist can touch a monk on offensive.

    • @Bruckner
      @Bruckner 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You didn't get the point I was trying to make. Comparing a pizza boy from Philly to a monk who trained all his like to achieve kung fu in martial arts is delusional.

      Most monks arent monks at all, just part of a wushu team (normally with their dojo/gym down the road from the temple) who pretend to look like monks. Probably because they know a lot of people respect Buddhist monks for the reputation they have as priests who train in martial arts while secluded from the rest of the world.
      I think they do these acrobatics mostly to entertain. If they get tips/donations then thatd be another reason for them to do it, as itd lessen the amount of time they spend at a regular job (since it replaces that with more exercise).

I find it funny though that his fans don't realize all of those Chuck Norris jokes are MAKING FUN of him, not boasting about him, and think people legitimately take him seriously. He even makes fun of himself half the time, from knowing he is overhyped. But, yeah, he is nowhere near a "real master." I guess you probably think Steven Segal is hardcore too.

    Think about it if a MMA guy came to China and started a serious fight with a shaolin martial artist, the shaolin student would just take a sword out and chop him up... Because thats what they train to do!
    Even better they also train to strike areas like the throat, which sports based martial arts aren't allowed to use so they aren't open to the more raw style of life or death martial arts. thats why you need morals and a clear (non violent) mind when it comes to traditional martial arts.

    • @AnnaTheFallMaiden
      @AnnaTheFallMaiden 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      the 'moral' you speak of is also existent in western martial arts, where they show themselves as rules. you need moral to follow the rules

    • @smokeclouds8
      @smokeclouds8 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose your right to some degree but the morals in western martial arts are simplistic compared to the depth of moral fiber developed over the years in the eastern martial arts.
      For example in westernMA you wouldn't continue to attack a unconscious opponent where as in EasternMA you wouldn't continue to attack a defenseless opponent.

    • @boxingjacks
      @boxingjacks 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      smokeclouds8 but you "would just take a sword out and chop him up..."
      If you knew anything of eastern philosophy you would not think in such petty dualism.
      What you see in this video is not Shaolin. It is a mix of vagabond kung fu and modern acrobatic wushu.

    • @smokeclouds8
      @smokeclouds8 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK? how would you like me to say that, HE would gracefully thrust his sword into his abdomen? no in reality when someone uses a sword on an opponent it will Chop, or Slice or Stab the opponent...
      let me ask you this master of eastern philosophy, you think when a REAL Shaolin monk had to defend himself, it was all romantic just like the movies. where they would bow, then they would go back and forth for 20mins? nope, I'm sorry my friend. shit got real in those fights.
      and yes I Know these are Disney monks, you don't need to be a master of eastern philosophy to know that....
      Do you have any other problems with my comment, or are you going to put your philosophy books away?

    • @AnnaTheFallMaiden
      @AnnaTheFallMaiden 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** you do know that the shaolin arts is probably of the deadliest fighting styles out there. Just because they don't do what you consider cool or awesome doesn't make it silly. There are arts that will destroy your body even in modern society outside of shaolin culture. The way the do their iron body techniques are incredible. It may be put towards a performance but that doesn't make the art fake.

    • @jordancrawford271

      ***** Dude i was just stating that though the performance is a performance it doesnt state the art isn't real. your taking this a bit far by saying a bunch of stuff that i didnt say. I was stating their iron body technique, i know safety is first and all but seriously, i think now is a time to drop the discussion. yes bullets will kill anybody, their is no defense against it. but there are a billion different ways to kill someone in the name of self-defense and there has to be substantial evidence that it was in the name of self-defense. I simply satated my opinion in the name of a fact and yet you took it way out of context. Good job on that one boy.
