At least Grunge was able to carry the torch for awhile along with other Metals bands still kickin (Metalica Anthrax, Megadeath etc). Dont get me wrong I love 80s metal but the Hair metal-sub genre had to die at some point. There are only so many times rock bands can write so many blatant songs about being manly and kicking ass while wearing crazy outfits. Not to mention by the early 90s, hair metal was starting becoming on par with how see pop music today, just a bunch of sell out clogs in the music industry.
