Rahdo I continue to enjoy every single review/preview you release. Your passion for board gaming translates perfectly. I have made several purchases for my own collection based on the way you 'sold' it to me. T.I.M.E Stories looks absolutely stunning, and it belongs in any story telling enthusiasts board game collection. I felt this way about The 7th Continent as well. Congratulations on doing the marketing departments job for them ;)
Fantastic breakdown of the rules and gameplay. I'm the kind of person who doesn't really fully immerse myself in the rulebook, and pick up more on how to do it through practical applications of what I read and these three videos have broken down the basics of the gameplay to the point where I think I can open up the box I purchased today and play it with my friends without having much, if any, trouble. So bravo, man. Thanks a million.
Awesome job. And thanks again! :)
Refreshing to see you pissed off about a game. Need more of this!
I just recently picked this game up.
I don't know if I have a newer edition (probably), but it has an additional 2 player variant in the rule book.
In the variant, you treat it like a 3 player game, but one 'pawn' is shared by both players with the time captain splitting ties in what that 'pawn' does.
I haven't played the Marcy Case, only the Asylum.
I played it with 2 people each controlling two 'pawns' and we had a blast!
We were hungry for content and having 2 'pawns' apiece really scratched our exploratory itch.
It sounds like there is more of a human element in the Marcy Case, so when we get it, I will definitely try the 2 players with 3 'pawns' variant first.
Rahdo, thank you for your views on two player -- that is ABSOLUTELY necessary for people who primarily play with their spouse.... Perhaps you could say at the beginning of the review that you both loved and disliked elements of it so that people continue to watch the comments :)
First off, I feel like this was one of your best final thoughts. It was passionate, insightful and articulate.
The one criticism I have is that I feel you missed the mark on your comparisons. Many of us watching your reviews do understand that it isn't fair to compare it to a normal board game. However, there is now a "Campaign style" genre within board games. I think it would be important to know how TIME Stories compares to the top tier games in the genre: Pandemic Legacy, Gloomhaven, Mice & Mystics, Imperial Assualt.
Ok, for the record I live in Argentina. That means I needed a spanish version of the game to make it work at all. You know, language misinterpretations could ruin the whole thing if happened, and I could only hammer my toes in reply as it would be no one's fault but mine to galactically fail an experience like this just to save a few? bucks. To make a long story short, the spanish version of the game ended costing me 176 Euros after taxes here in Buenos Aires. 208 dollars, imagine that. That's why I postponed it for so long. And that was until I finaly took courage enough to see your "guaranteed sell" review of this interactive story device. That was it. Favourite links clicked, credit card data, one second of hesitating remorse and "CHECK OUT". In two days I'm playing it for the first time. With 3 of my best friends. I know it will be a BLAST. Cause I've learnt Rahdo knows his stuff...
On word... just one word... BEST-GAMING-EXPERIENCE-EVER!!!!
Hey Rahdo - This is the first time that I've experienced your reviews - and TBH I did skip the spoilers and went straight through to the Final Thoughts. You passion for the game certainly comes through and as a (video) game developer and passionate board game player I'm thoroughly convinced as to the quality of the game. Your VHS analogy appears fair, well thought out and argued and if I may add one more point that I think you did allude too with your Aliens reference - the joy that you would get personally watching someone else experience the game. Add to my list and now off to see about Scythe!
Best final thoughts ever you had me captivated, I think, as someone has already mentioned, it was the passion. One question, whilst I understand your VHS/movie analogy and watching again with friends etc, when it comes to this game wouldn't knowing the solution/answer to a scenario completely ruin any chance of discovery, decision making or surprise?...I take from your review that the meat of this game is in the story telling that develops through the players, but can that still be there if even one of you know the answer to the riddle?
+zwicky93 sure, in exactly the same way as nothing the end of aliens ruins my discover & surprise as well. but i can still enjoy it, by enjoying the responses of others. i would be more "along for the ride" doing my part, rolling dice and defeating challenges, but i don't think i'd take an active role in deciding what are we go to next, for instance. i'd let them decide. when we get to the area, there's every chance that there will have been some cards that i never got a chance to see because i never read them in the past. i could definitely volunteer to check those out, but even if i'd seen everything, i think i'd still enjoy taking a card again and reminding myself what it said, so i can relay that informtion to everyone else (i.e. tell a story).
plus, if enough time passes, there's a LOT of details i'm not going to remember. we haven't played for 4 days, and for the life of me, i don't remember where we got the (spoiler) to open the (spoiler) in the (spoiler). i remember what's in it, but not how to open it. so i expect in 6 months, i'll remember the main plot points, but none of the particulars of how to go about resolving those points. just like you might have a book you really enjoy reading once every few years, i cn see one wanting to come back and expeirence Marcy Case again... :)
***** I take your point, as with so many things it's the journey that is the fun part, so I can appreciate where the replay value would be, it may be a different experience but still an enjoyable one. I've lost count of how many times I've watched the extended directors cut of Aliens and enjoyed it every time :)
As always a great review thank you...and as I said in my previous comment the best Final Thoughts ever....great job
+rahdo i have a question regarding replay value. i play board games mostly with my sister and maybe once per moth with a group of friends. do you think it s interesting to replay the base game story for example multiple times with the same ppl? like my sister for instance
+PriestBonner hmm... i can imagine i might be able to enjoy it maybe 2 times after i've finished it myself, to kind of "tag along" with another group if they're really enjoying it and I'm enjoying them enjoying it :)
You don't really have to play one of the characters yourself either. If you are showing it to 3-4 others, just play sort of a GM role. Read the setup cards for them, maybe do some voices for Laura, Sam, etc. Get them immersed. Help out with any mechanical questions. Then just watch it all unfold :)
As someone who mainly plays 2 player games, thank you for this honest final thought. The game has gone from one of the hottest games I was looking forward to, to one I'm not as interested in. I think I'll stick with Tragedy Looper. (Actually I'll probably give it a go at Spiel, then decide).
Thanks so much for that, I was on the fence whether to pick this up in Essen or not. Great to hear you enjoyed the storytelling aspect. Any chance you could give us more info on the 2 player variant you concocted. Thanks again.
+Niall McGrath i just made a thread for it here: www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1446154/two-player-variant :)
Great final thoughts! Appreciate this, very insightful.
Best final thoughts ever.. I literally have not played the game.. But ur 2player game experience made me laugh so hard. I feel your rage and i completely believe thats what the designers were thinking. Just shows a lack of considerations for the smaller crowd.
Great! You bring it on the point! (2 Players/3 Players/4 Players)
Though this is a year old, thanks for the great runthrough and final thoughts! I am pretty much sold on the game, but I do have one question: I know The Marcy Case is meant as an expansion, but do you think it can be its own standalone game? From what I understand, you would just need the board (to place the cards), dices, and tokens from the based game. I feel like those are easily replaceable with parts from other games and/or using generic tokens. If you did end up getting the other expansions as well, could you also comment on those.
you're right, if you wanted to duplicate the custom dice and tokens, you could play without buying the base game. but remember, the base game comes with a full adventure itself ("the asylum") which many fans of the game consider to be superior to Marcy Case, especially since it was designed to be the introduction to the game system...
@Rahdo Imo, if they make it into a 2 player game, they should just give everyone extra time instead of making it into 4 pieces. Or give each player 1 extra movement per area. Out of curiosity, what was your variant?
+Straddllw www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1446154/two-player-variant :)
Thanks for this video. It became a must buy for me after hearing your thoughts.
Thanks again! 2!
Richard, please don't apologize for your frustrations: love seeing your passion come through in these final thoughts. Presents a nice contrast to your more naturally positive/charitable assessments of games. Real shame on the 2P version, as my girlfriend and I were looking forward to this. Couple it with only 5-10 hours and I feel this system may have been given a disservice by the marketing. Shame, really. Oh, well, maybe I'll find a chance to play it and check it out in the future anyway. :)
Oh and its a matter of taste, I was a lot more interested in the Asylum horror theme (and to a lesser extent, the Macey case theme) than I am of fantasy and Egyptian theme. So, the Asylum really hooked me in. I picked to cannibal for my first playthrough because OMG IT'S A FRICKEN CANNIBAL THAT LOOKS SUPER CREEPY!! I love horror games. I just hope there's some gruesome mummy horror in the Egyptian one.
This feels like the game that Pathfinder Adventure Card Game wanted to be.
Amazing Review, now i´m totally interested.
Thanks for the review!
Can you please make a recommendation or a list of cooperative family games
well, i've done 2 "top10 gateway/family" videos in the past, and between them, there's 7 co-op games i called out :)

:)
@@rahdo thank you!!! For the quick reply and the link. Maybe just keep it in the back of your mind for the future as you update some lists, to make one for cooperative games that are good with family, especially games that can teach a good value or develop personality through coop mechanics. I love what you do and you are absolutely talented, thank you again
Love the galaxy quest reference
My favorite game since I bought (and all of the two expansions)!
Hey Rahdo! First of all - great review. Me and some friends have both the Asylum och Marcy and we LOVE them. I am interested in getting a copy of the Sherlock Holmes Consulting Agency (Less dice rolling, but more deduction etc). How would you compare these two games?
Keep up the good work with board game reviews. I always check your thoughts on a game before getting a copy. Many thanks from Sweden! //Kenny
i've done spoiler-free runthroughs for both, so you can compared how they play via that :)
Is said variant below from game geek the one you played and does it work well .great vids by way
Do you have a list of 2 player variants recommended for each expansion and the core story?
I had Tragedy Looper on my wishlist but even though TL beats this on replayability i will get Time Stories instead cause it has a lot more in the story department and thats what i want from this type of game.
I realize this review is not new anymore, but I think you touch on some great points. My wife and I really enjoyed this game too, but it seems for very different reasons (she's not into either of those two themes either). We added more time, like you did, so we could play as two characters. But that was more for logistical reasons than rpg. [spoiler alert] You're playing as vessels anyway, so you're not actually "that character" so we didn't feel the need for that sort of immersion, I guess. [/end spoiler]. And we just flipped the cards and looked at them together, not telling the story to each other, but reading it at the same time. So a pretty different approach. :) But we still had tons of fun. For us it was the experience of figuring out a neat, visually stunning puzzle together.
Thumbs up for doing a great video and review. And another thumbs up for liking Aliens. One of the greatest movies of all time.
Wow - Angry Rahdo (not to be confused with Happy Rahdo, Sleepy Rahdo and Sneezy Rahdo :) ) - that's new. Completely understand why - RPGs have the same problem when the fragile bubble of immersion is popped.
Great video, man. Really well said. About to play for the first time tomorrow. Can't wait.
hey daniel, after playing it once, do you feel like you would enjoy playing it again soon (as opposed to after 5yrs)?
I ended up not liking it all that much. It was OK, and I had a fun time. We did not finish the scenario in one setting, and I don't have any desire to return to it. It's one of those games in which a video game does everything this game does, but better, because the video game handles all the fiddly bits for you behind the scenes. Might as well just gather around the TV or monitor and play an adventure game together with friends, taking turns passing the controller, and solving puzzles as a group.
I don't play video games, but I'm glad to hear there is at least one other person in the world who is not completely enamored by this game. I was engaged for the first 2 times running through the scenario, but when we were faced with going through everything a third time, one guy suggested we not do that and find some way to cut the game short. We should have listened to him b/c the third round DRAGGED on and on, and we kept playing until we had solved the puzzle. The anticlimactic ending was disappointing for me, and I got SO tired of the repetition of fighting horrific creatures (played the asylum base game). I honestly don't understand why people rate this game so highly.
Right. It seems like a game that is most fun when you play less of it. To me, that's not a good game!
Right. It seems like a game that is most fun when you play less of it. To me, that's not a good game!
Good final thoughts :) also the anology. Looking at the Cover of the marcy case, I would have thought you will come up with a Walkman anology :D waiting for the German Version to become available again After Essen
So much Rahdo Rage!
Thanks for the review! Very helpful.
Great review Richard. I have the game but haven't played it yet...in regards to your issues with the 2 player, do you think utilizing the 2nd character can be likened to an NPC like in role playing games? I am so excited to get this on the board, your enthusiasm raises that another level!
+Joel Dalangin if you'd like, but that' snot how it felt to us while playing...
Hi rahdo. If you compare this game lets say with agricola, trajan, keyflower, Which is similar or with which game can you compare?:) it is thought i know but if you can :)
I play most of time with two, maybe sometimes in three, how many time is long this game? Is it hard game like agricola for example or else...?! Thank you
Galaxy Quest! YES!
Rahdo, I got one question: if you already know the story, and play it with others, how can you still make decisions if: (fictional example) you already know that looking in the car trunk is a waste of time?
+hekje12345 sure you can still make decisions, but i would recommend that if you already 'know the answer', you should let the newbies discover them for themselves :)
@rahdo was revisiting some of your older videos and looked at your BGG account. TIME stories isn't there rahdo > all (the original aka this video version nor are the expansions). What's the deal? Is this still in your collection?
well we finished all of the storylines, and since no more were coming, i donated it to the dice tower west library :)
I've had this on preorder for awhile but was worried about being able to play or to want to play through the only scenario in the box, thanks for clearing that worry. Of the two other expansions they have announced A Prophecy Of Dragons and Under The Mask which has you more excited?
+Jacob Parish dragons probably. i believe artist is vincent dutrait, and he is AWESOME (I love that they're getting different artists for different expansions)
+rahdo Fresh look for a fresh game. Unless the release schedule on their site is wrong it appears we'll see the Dragon box in Nov-Dec and the Egyptian on in January 2016, I'm wondering if they will be keeping a monthly/bi-monthly release schedule for the foreseeable future. Also as for the horror/zombie settings for these first few games I would say they planned for an October release and wanted to capitalize on the Halloween factor.
They choose Asylum for the base set is because, i guess, they think mysterious mansion is the most popular trope in such genre of board game. But they don't realize that their arts are too good at capturing that creepy atmosphere lol
Do you have any idea if the Marcy Case will be available at Essen? I haven't been able to confirm that.
+jaxommm i would assume so, since they had one to send me. it's already available in french, so hopefully english will be at the show too :)
+jaxommm i guess so. it was released in germany along with the base game.
I agree, I really, really dislike it when a game's certain player count has you control multiple characters at once. It just takes me out of it, and it seems to be a genuine problem here. Thanks for the review, I will certainly check this one out at Essen.
I think it's counter productive to have one player have information and NOT share with others, where's cooperation in that? it's like Dead of winter when you rephrase the choice to other players without giving all the information
the intent is that you do share everything, just in your own words
I'm so glad! You were kinda 'meh' about it on your podcast. This looks SO cool! How are the rules? Easy to read?
+Chantal Noordeloos literally the next day the game showed up in the mail, and we were very surprised. rules themselves are very well done :)
Definitely annoying re 2 player issue. Ordered this then cancelled once I realised about having to run 2 characters each. Lordy. Rain check until they sort this. Great review Richard.
Hi Rahdo, the link to your recommended 2p variant isn't working - do you know if the location has changed?
Thanks
there's some sort of weirdness going on with youtube. it's truncating the links if viewed on some platforms like ipads. if you check it on a regular computer browser, you should find it working fine :)
rahdo thank you for your reply. It was from a desktop pc. Not to worry I'll search through the forums. PS thank you for introducing me to so many amazing games.
well that's even stranger. here's the full link, taken from the shownotes above. i assume when you're clicking on the link, it's stopping at 1446 or something?
boardgamegeek.com/thread/1446154/two-player-variant
rahdo that works. Thank you!
TIME Stories, 7th Continent, or Tragedy Looper?
+zeroisnine If there is some need to pick one and exclude the other two .. due to finances or hypotheticals or whatever ... the answer will vary for each person. We all have different tastes.
+zeroisnine well, i've done runthroughs for all three, so you can decide for yourself hopefully! :)
U do the best reviews so how did u tweak it to only be 2 players....they have this at my game store
there's a link in the shownotes for this video :)
Rahdo, have you ranked this in your collection yet?
+Glen Just Ahhh, found it. 8.027. #133. Above Alchemists and below Saint Petersburg. ; )
Do you keep all 8.0+ games in your collection? Any games that you rank below 8.0 that stay in your collection? Just curious.
+Glen Most everything at 7.5 and above is a keeper, below i'm happy to keep but wouldn't mind terribly if they went :)
Looks awesome but it probably won't be as original to us because the storytelling mechanism sounds very similar to the method we already use when playing other adventure board games (not reading the story blurb on the card to the group, but telling it as if it really happened to you in your own words).
+Jon Reed then you guys are ahead of the curve, and we're all catching up with you! :)
+rahdo Ha! Not everyone enjoys being storytellers, though. We usually try to incorporate some sort of light storytelling with every game: similar, I've noticed, to what you and Jen do. It's cool that this game encourages and makes it a mechanism. Maybe T.I.M.E. will fundamentally change how gamers will play their existing adventure games! Thanks for another awesome runthrough, Richard.
Where can I preorder? I'm sold😀
+Joe Valle it's actually for sale in europe now, though i think only the french version. i'm sure after essen it'll be more widely available
***** thanks, really solid review!
damn u for making sense and making me buy more games! C u at Essen!
Anyone use a decent 2P variant for the Asylum??
+Reid Bowie www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1448444/two-player-variant-asylum-3rd-update :)
+rahdo are there any 2 player variants for other expansions
+Phil Barber yup, you can go ot boardgamegeek.com and check the variants forum for each and find that people are finding ways to make them all work well with 2p
Cheers mind you getting ahead of myself still to play first one yet I've 15 games sat on shelf waiting to learn rules just which one first
Rahdo, what would you get...this, or the 7th Continent?
+Q yluras if you want stronger storytelling, TS. if you want stronger gameplay, 7C :)
Thanks for your reply! If we add the fact that I will play mostly 2 player games...then I'll go with 7C!
I just watched the review from the "Shut up and Sit down" boys and they say stories don't go far and the replay ability is shallow. Ie, it's a waste of 5 hours.
Spoilers!!! Shutter island is a horror movie??? :P You killed it for me !!!!! (kidding). Seriously though, this or Tragedy Looper?
+imthewhiterabbit Tragedy Looper is a completely different style of game, its more like clue mixed with a one vs. many deduction game. When I got it I thought it was going to be a storytelling experience, but it really wasn't, in my opinion. It all depends on what you are looking for I guess.
+imthewhiterabbit well i've done runthroughs for both, so you can check them out for yourself, but they're *radically* different experiences. TS is stronger on storytelling, TL is stronger on gameplay
no way! you don´t want move from malta!
Dare I mention what ur thoughts are for solo play!? ;o]
+Joe Gans i think i did talk about solo in that vid, no?
+rahdo I maybe didn't catch it! Best not to revisit ur thoughts on solo\two players in case u blow a gasket!!!
You say this is a horror game/not a family game...if it was a movie would you rate this a pg-13? Or an r rated movie?
+David Koehnlein i would say that cable tv shows would be more applicable. the level of 'intensity' and 'disturbing images' would be equivalent to the walking dead, or american horror story
+rahdo ok I'll take that into consideration...thanks! :)
I know the replay value is zero on the game but isnt it even worse than that because by the time you teach yourself to play the game you seen and spoiled the only Quest it comes with?
+TheFewzz there's no need to teach yourself how to play with trial runs through the game, because the gameplay is so crazy simple :)
Wow. They didn't have to make it two players at all. That's not how they intended the game to be played. The fact that they even bothered a little bit to make a 2-player variant is going above and beyond. But I guess some people feel too entitled. It's like getting a free meal and complaining that it's not cooked the way you like it. That makes me angrier that this guy being angry that the 2-player wasn't up to his standards.
wow indeed! i assume you're aware of the irony? that you're getting a free -meal- video and complaining that it's not -cooked- filmed the way you like it! i guess we're all a bit entitled! pots and kettles and all that.
though one big difference between you and me... i spent a LOT of time talking about all the positives, but you've got nothing but negativity. but that's just another day on the internet i suppose.
@@rahdo My apologies for not writing a full review of the video. I don't find the TH-cam comments section to be a great place to write reviews, so I used them merely to write... um, comments.
I'm happy that you picked up on the irony of my joke, though. But another big difference I suspect exists between the two of us is that I don't think you were joking about your anger and negativity. But my apologies again if I misunderstood and that was actually satire (to be fair, it's a lot harder to tell someone's intended tone in text). Maybe we're both really fun-loving guys!
oh sure, i was definitely upset by the lack of care that was put into 2p of a game that wasn't free to people, but was labelled and sold as a 2p game, no doubt. but i wasn't trolling them, i was offering constructive criticism (if a bit sharp) indicating how things could have been done better. it is a review after all.
@@rahdo It was just the level of apparent anger that came across as entitled to me. Especially since you knew that the creators intended for it to be a 3-4 player game, and 2p was just added at the last minute to throw a bone to those who have fewer gaming friends.
I didn't expect anyone to see my comment on a video that's almost 8-years old, let alone the creator, so I'm grateful for the engagement!
I'm itsy bitsy disappointed by the run through. IMO you should explain the "shallow" gameplay, warn about the spoilers and joust go through it. How long the video would be if you cut all the spoiler alerts?:) The game is not really my cup of tea but the art - super lovely. Especially the box are are so... out of the box. And with all the aliens mentions I have my hopes high for Legendary Encounters: ALIEN run through:)
+TheFlymar i think that's pretty much what i did, but wanted to give those who don't like spoilers the most stuff to see as possible :)
You are overreacting. I hosted this game. for people who don't speak English. So we flipped every card and discussed everything openly. Still a great experience.
I will also never understand you, Rahdo. Why play only with your wife and limit your options so severely when you can simply find a third player. Your reviews and gaming experience suffer immensely because of that.
the closest boardgamers available to me are over 2 hours away, as i live on a tiny island (gozo) and would have to ferry back and forth to the mainland (malta) and from literally one side of the country to the other to get to them to play games with them.
not gonna happen. plus, i'm *more* than happy just playing games with my wife... there are far too many games for me to cover already with my 2p limit, so if i didn't havet, id hvae even more games that i don't have proper time to cover.
Hi rahdo. If you compare this game lets say with agricola, trajan, keyflower, Which is similar or with which game can you compare?:) it is thought i know but if you can :)
I play most of time with two, maybe sometimes in three, how many time is long this game? Is it hard game like agricola for example or else...?! Thank you
+SuperTupko this really isn't anything like any of those games. it's less a game and more an interactive storytelling exercise, tbh :)
