      It’s because Spanish and Portuguese are so similar, and Brazilians can comprehend Spanish more than vice versa

      The origin of these languages. Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Catalan, Galician, etc were born from Latin; that's why the native-speakers of those languages have a HUGE FACILITY to learn one of them. English is a germanic language (yes, the "old" German) like Dutch, the proper German, Swedish, Danish, etc and there's the same why about native-speakers of one Latin language learning another one. In short words, you as an English native-speaker (as far as I know) has a HUGE FACILITY to learn, in example, German. I hope it had helped you
