A brilliant production Don. I know that it must be scary for there to be obstructions on the lines. I was lucky in my time at driving that I only managed to hit the odd wood pigeon or two on the Conwy Valley line, but I know of other drivers that had far worse encounters. Great video once again Don, as a retired Signalling Technician I must point out that the AWS system only works one way from the track to the train. It doesn't have any control over the signals clearing. The signals will be approach lit by the operation of a track circuit occupied by the train.
I probably explained badly. What I was saying was that by design, the track circuits don’t let the signal step up until the AWS has registered a warning.
So I'm building a model railway in my converted car port / garage / shed. Scratch building tunnel portals I'd wanted to know what the brick arch way was called to ask other modellers questions later... Put this vid on the tv today for background viewing and whilst stopped at a station I looked up and you were detailing the individual parts of a bridge!! Truly brilliant attention to the subject in your window and absolutely informative to interested (but uneducated) followers like myself. Bravo Don sir! Keep them coming!
Also interesting Mike is that the brick or stone lining under the bridge is always diagonal which greatly increases strength. We take them for granted but they are spectacular really. Glad you found it useful.

Yes, Howden station is about a mile North of the town centre. A pity, but I suppose it makes sense to have the station close to the railway line! Another great video, big contrasts in the landscape as we cross the country.
A legacy of our desire to own a car. We lost so much when the public lost interest in the railway and we can rarely get it back. Your railway through the town centre was one of them.

The OLE in the first 12 minutes presumably dates from when the Woodhead route was in use and is similar in appearance to that on the approach to London Liverpool St before it was renewed. Is this the old non-self-tensioning type? It has a contact and a catenary wire but what's the 3rd wire for?
I spoke to the adults at Cross Gates and the lads at Garforth were enjoying their hobby just the same so why not 👍. Years ago when I was in the motor industry I visited a workshop of a notoriously difficult to deal with huge transport company in Sweden or Denmark. A young lad came with coffee and wanted to quiz me on various aspects of the subject (disc brakes on trucks). I spent quite a bit of time and sent him some technical information afterwards. I visited a few years later and instead of the dubious welcome most suppliers got, I was treated like a lord. That young man was the owners son and was running the place. You reap what you sow so they say. I’ll be long retired by the time one of those lads at Garforth is chairman of Network Rail but he might remember the old dodger driving for TPE 😉
Can't believe this line still isn't electrified. Can't remember with NWEP phase this was supposed to be. What i remember was the section around Mosley was a nightmare due to the cutting and proximity of the houses.
The work to electrify that stretch is underway and I will do a video soon. They will get by those houses with a long neutral section but to do it they have to move the station back towards Greenfield. That gives enough space for trains to accelerate and coast past the houses.
Bradford was one off many West Riding towns where travellers to London had to get a stagecoach to Leeds. Then they got a train to Selby. Then they got on a steamboat to London. Different towns were better connected to to Leeds or Manchester by an actual train, at different dates; but before Leeds was connected to London by rail, the sea was the quickest & safest way up to London from old Yorkshire.
Absolutely Glyn. We take it all for granted and can’t really appreciate just how much the railway changed the nation and history. I watched Gentlemen Jack (Anne Lister) which although a drama, reasonably portrays the difficulties of travelling around the country. She’s also just getting to the stage of realising the forthcoming railway might be a good investment despite her interests in the canals. She could do Halifax to York in a day but it must have been quite a task.
60mm is the cut off point but they may stop at less depending on the damage. I had to go fetch a train from Huddersfield not long ago at 30mph all the way to the depot.

You always proceed on the signal presented to you so as long as you are sure, even if it changes at the last second, they want you to act on it as it speeds up the railway. You might get one yellow stepping up to two. In that case you might proceed with less caution but your route knowledge tells you what is safe. Some signals are close together and some very far apart.

The problem is that the track is nowhere near good enough and needs loads of money spending on it before they can even contemplate putting wires up. There is miles of it effected by mining and that all needs sorting - it won’t be cheap. Keep your fingers crossed on that one ☝️

At our local station, trains would also run into the platform while the crossing was open, as you show at Brough. In our case, the crossing is much closer to the end of the platform and the signal (just a few metres). What additional safety measures are in place to prevent a train overrunning and potentially crossing an open level crossing?
The way we drive is different in such situations and of course the TPWS would trip if we got past the signal. I don’t expect that to close the gates but it would put the road traffic lights back to red.
Yet another great cab ride Don, and the Gilberdyke 'intelligencia' have clearly been at it on the other line too, judging by the evidence on the crossing. From around 1:44:40 it's possible to see the lights on the Class 155 that you pass almost 4 minutes later, and that would tie in with them having stopped after hitting something. Luckily no obvious damage done, but it just shows how often these incidents occur and the sad state of some members of society
It doesn’t actually. You can see the lights from miles away and it gives the impression that they are stationary but they’re heading towards you at some speed.
They came with a road tanker and refueled it just before we left. I think they tend to keep them topped up and obviously lugging stone out of quarries will use more than trunking down the WCML. They’ll do a couple of days mostly but they won’t risk them running out so top ups are frequent.
Another interesting video, I didn't know there were so many parts to a bridge! Most people would have uttered an expletive when they hit that debris. Did you mute the sound?!
Just before Stalybridge, you mentioned that the line is going to be electrified. Will the pre-existing gantries from the 1,500V DC days be reused at all, if they are found to be in good condition?
I passed by yesterday. They won’t use those old structures and the new ones are going in. Whether the old ones will survive remains to be seen but I doubt it personally.
Lovely video as always Don, but I assume Northern and TPE are short staffed? I'm disappointed that they have axed the Liverpool-Scarborough 68, making only 1 TPH from Liverpool to Newcastle (sometimes Edinburgh). Not to mention Northerns drastic cuts. I have heard that there will be a Lime St-Hull service soon though! Cheers....
I don’t get involved in politics on social media but yes, the railway is in a pitiful mess at the moment. Fingers crossed it all gets sorted out real soon. Correct about Liverpool to Hull and there will be Liverpool to Cleethorpes too 👍
Hull Station platforms appear to be numbered from 1 to 7 but from the video there appear to be 11 platforms 2:10:34. Am I missing something ? Many years since I have been to Hull Station.
From Brisbane, Down Under .... The rabbit is well practised but what about pedestrians? I am amazed at the number of public footpaths (PF) that cross this very busy line. Does this cause many incidents with pedestrians? Thanks for the attention to detail - very educational.
Cheers Dan. There are plans but that line needs a lot of money spending on the track before they can electrify it. They keep talking about it then pull the budget again. Hopefully it will escape this spending review on the 17th but it runs now with diesels so it might get culled again. Keep everything crossed 🤞 👍
Looks like there was also something placed on the other line... freeze it at (1:48:45) ... click on this time ... 1:48:44 ....to give you time to freeze the video... and you can see the object you are about to hit, and you can see two parts of a broken object on the other line. Dam kids I guess...?
There was. They’d put objects on both lines but we couldn’t see them until it was too late. It was reported to me as ballast but like you I checked when I got home.
Once again thanks. Don you know i am i transport so therefore i assume that both yourself and guard have to complete a walk around check and sign it off ? I ask because i was on an internal turbo prop flight recently and a crew change when the relief crew boarded the plan one of the flight crew did a walk around check. As we were waiting to board some "mouth" behind us said "what's he looking for the plane can't he see it"? Without being rude i simply turned round that he is checking the flaps,tyres,filler caps,cables etc aka is the plane fit to fly. A few smiles from passengers behind and no reply from Mr Mouth.
We don’t have to sign Harry but we are monitored via the data recorder so when they do a download they’ll look to see that certain checks have been done even if the train is late starting. As these checks are unannounced, the driver won’t risk setting off without doing them.
Did you read the note right at the beginning James? These adverts are very emotive but to start with, I don’t place them, TH-cam does. Because the films are long and most people tend to watch them half an hour at a time, TH-cam load the first half hour then they ease off. However, we are fund raising for the Samaritans and the permission to film is on that understanding. There’s more advertising on ITV and you pay for BBC or DVDs and nothing goes to charity.

When they built them they were going to be run as a single unit as we needed all 51 sets to run the service. There was an intention to have a fourth carriage but that never materialised so in other words they shouldn’t have needed a corridor connection.
There are various bleeps and buzzers. We get a ping for a green signal and a buzzer for warnings. Rapid bleeps are vigilance to check we are still awake!
Those Network rail rabbits are at it again.No PPE. typical. you tell em and tell em but they don't listen. I assume it was just tamping a bit of stone out of the way? I noticed the nice Newlay laid train and Ballast in Platform 5 and adjacent. 4 or 6. not familiar with Hull. It looks like a couple of platforms have been taken out of commission. But its an imposing station
Not sure that rabbit was on duty Andrew 😉. Until recently, platforms 4 & 5 were in a real state. The track was literally falling apart but now it’s all brand new and really nice. They’ve re gauged it so the clearances for the steps are right too.
It was reported to me as ballast but in reality it was what looked like short sections of metal pipe. Of course, I didn’t know that until I got home and reviewed the footage.
They are pressing on with millions of pounds worth of improvements all across the North. They are electrifying the pennine route I drive and have started electrification right up to Sheffield on the MML. There are lots of other improvements on other northern routes I’m more than grateful for.

Good question. It has a secondary dropper wire because it’s the original none standard contact wire. It’s more like a copper bar than a wire.

How long does the fuel last on the train? Does it need refulling during the day?
They came with a road tanker and refueled it just before we left. I think they tend to keep them topped up and obviously lugging stone out of quarries will use more than trunking down the WCML. They’ll do a couple of days mostly but they won’t risk them running out so top ups are frequent.

It’s still very much there Alec although it’ll change soon with TRU. I pass there virtually every time I’m in work and I never get bored with it.

Just before Stalybridge, you mentioned that the line is going to be electrified. Will the pre-existing gantries from the 1,500V DC days be reused at all, if they are found to be in good condition?
I passed by yesterday. They won’t use those old structures and the new ones are going in. Whether the old ones will survive remains to be seen but I doubt it personally.

Lovely video as always Don, but I assume Northern and TPE are short staffed? I'm disappointed that they have axed the Liverpool-Scarborough 68, making only 1 TPH from Liverpool to Newcastle (sometimes Edinburgh). Not to mention Northerns drastic cuts. I have heard that there will be a Lime St-Hull service soon though! Cheers....
I don’t get involved in politics on social media but yes, the railway is in a pitiful mess at the moment. Fingers crossed it all gets sorted out real soon. Correct about Liverpool to Hull and there will be Liverpool to Cleethorpes too 👍
Hull Station platforms appear to be numbered from 1 to 7 but from the video there appear to be 11 platforms 2:10:34. Am I missing something ? Many years since I have been to Hull Station.
Yes, seven platforms but there used to be a lot more. The sheds on the far left now house a bus interchange so it does look odd.
From Brisbane, Down Under .... The rabbit is well practised but what about pedestrians? I am amazed at the number of public footpaths (PF) that cross this very busy line. Does this cause many incidents with pedestrians? Thanks for the attention to detail - very educational.
Hi John, hope all is well over there. There are occasional accidents but it’s far worse in the US for instance where the railways are open.

Cheers Dan. There are plans but that line needs a lot of money spending on the track before they can electrify it. They keep talking about it then pull the budget again. Hopefully it will escape this spending review on the 17th but it runs now with diesels so it might get culled again. Keep everything crossed 🤞 👍

There was. They’d put objects on both lines but we couldn’t see them until it was too late. It was reported to me as ballast but like you I checked when I got home.
Once again thanks. Don you know i am i transport so therefore i assume that both yourself and guard have to complete a walk around check and sign it off ? I ask because i was on an internal turbo prop flight recently and a crew change when the relief crew boarded the plan one of the flight crew did a walk around check. As we were waiting to board some "mouth" behind us said "what's he looking for the plane can't he see it"? Without being rude i simply turned round that he is checking the flaps,tyres,filler caps,cables etc aka is the plane fit to fly. A few smiles from passengers behind and no reply from Mr Mouth.
We don’t have to sign Harry but we are monitored via the data recorder so when they do a download they’ll look to see that certain checks have been done even if the train is late starting. As these checks are unannounced, the driver won’t risk setting off without doing them.

Adverts are killing these excellent films.
Did you read the note right at the beginning James? These adverts are very emotive but to start with, I don’t place them, TH-cam does. Because the films are long and most people tend to watch them half an hour at a time, TH-cam load the first half hour then they ease off. However, we are fund raising for the Samaritans and the permission to film is on that understanding. There’s more advertising on ITV and you pay for BBC or DVDs and nothing goes to charity.

only trouble with 185s is they should have been built with corridor conections easier for staff to move about
When they built them they were going to be run as a single unit as we needed all 51 sets to run the service. There was an intention to have a fourth carriage but that never materialised so in other words they shouldn’t have needed a corridor connection.
Is the bleeping telling you there’s a signal coming up
There are various bleeps and buzzers. We get a ping for a green signal and a buzzer for warnings. Rapid bleeps are vigilance to check we are still awake!

We have to learn the route but there are usually stop car markers. You’ll see them in the videos.

Those Network rail rabbits are at it again.No PPE. typical. you tell em and tell em but they don't listen. I assume it was just tamping a bit of stone out of the way? I noticed the nice Newlay laid train and Ballast in Platform 5 and adjacent. 4 or 6. not familiar with Hull. It looks like a couple of platforms have been taken out of commission. But its an imposing station
Not sure that rabbit was on duty Andrew 😉. Until recently, platforms 4 & 5 were in a real state. The track was literally falling apart but now it’s all brand new and really nice. They’ve re gauged it so the clearances for the steps are right too.

It was reported to me as ballast but in reality it was what looked like short sections of metal pipe. Of course, I didn’t know that until I got home and reviewed the footage.

They are pressing on with millions of pounds worth of improvements all across the North. They are electrifying the pennine route I drive and have started electrification right up to Sheffield on the MML. There are lots of other improvements on other northern routes I’m more than grateful for.
If thew are overcaught putt them in Prison for a year or two.
