I'm 63. The voice of a generation. His music has always been with me. Thank you, Paul
64 right there with you.
Not really the voice of a generation. I'm 62. Still, it was good although he looked like he was about to fall asleep. Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard would have been better.
Yes, thank you
62, and I agree. I don't know if I would call him the voice of the generation, because we were lucky enough to have so many great voices, but he was among the best. My mom was a little unsure about them hearing my favorite song, "The Boxer". She didn't really think it was appropriate for me, who discovered the song at 10 to hear this:
"Asking only workman's wages, I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on 7th Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there,"
56 and right there with you
One man, one guitar, one voice. Paul Simon has such a strong presence all by himself on that stage. Wow.
And put the crowd to sleep
@@Allmenshouldrespectallwomen Your name and comment are how an amateur makes an attempt to anger people; you're not good enough to be a troll.
You know it man!
@@Allmenshouldrespectallwomendisrespectful comment for a classic.
@@joannbeiser4907 There is a difference between being disrespectfull for all the music Paul has given us, and acknowledging that the man is 82 years old and can nolonger sing the way he used to.
I'm happy for the guy that he can still play guitar and do his thing, and several of his songs will always instantly bring me back to my youth, but notice how this is pretty much the only comment that says this is a good performance? The rest allmost exclusively say how it reminds them of when Paul was younger.
We can sit here and pretend that we have this song on repeat, but we don't. Paul is getting too old for this, somebody should tell him that.
Paul Simon doesn’t just sing a song you all know, he reinvents it.
His timing is unique
No autotune, no over the top choreography, just a man, a mic, and his squeaky guitar. Amazing.
He's doing just fine for 83
Yup. I miss the non-dancers lol
@@Brian-uy2tj. Paul turns 83 on October 13th🥰. He was born in ‘41❤

How does he do it
Nearly fifty years on, and he can still bring something fresh and new to the tune. 👏👏👏
He brought this new poignancy to it! Outstanding.
The mighty Paul Simon is a Wisdom Keeper for the planet. He transcends time, place, medium... When he performs, his soul is wide open.
The very definition of a master musician. Paul Simon, superb writer, singer, performer. I am a better human being for having heard his performances over the last 60+ years. Thank you, sir. I wish you long life to help us all survive the difficulties we face. A well chosen serenade for Steven and his beloved Evie on his 60th birthday. :)
💗 what a nice birthday present for Stephen.
That's how you tell a story people. Just a voice, a guitar, and no distractions. Not even a drum, so the tempo can flow and progress as Paul feels it., creating his own drama as the audience is rapt in attention.. His age and wisdom all on display in its fantastic glory.
Such an iconic man and song! Thank you Paul!
While he can't play as cleanly as he once did, nor does he sound like he did decades ago, this was the best performance of this song that I've ever seen. Brilliant guitar arrangement, touching vocal. He didn't just perform that song, he embodied it. I was profoundly moved.
Wow. The stunning level of narcissism it must take to keep performing 25 years after you sounded decent. I'll never understand it: give it up already geezers! You sound like crap! Well adjusted and normal performers (like Rush) know when to quit! This was just sad. I wouldn't see this if you paid me. A lot.
Pure humanity
@@benjaminholt6640this takes way more mastery than playing it cleanly
Paul wrote some of the most beautiful music of his generation and beyond. He is doing just fine at 83. Thank you Stephen for having him on your show, it was a real treat.
Man... my dog wouldn't even sing at my last birthday. This guy gets Paul Simon!
Sad + beautiful.
Spruced it up a bit as if to say I ain't done yet. Love you Paul!
One of his most soulful songs performed with wisdom, confidence and maturity. He’s my father’s age and I am 63. I got emotional watching this.
This song hits harder and harder as I get older (45 now). Lovely performance. So blessed to have Simon as the musical soundtrack to our lives.
Classic. So glad to see him out there.
MANY years ago I was 14 year old runaway that snuck into a concert of Simon and Garfunkel in Eugene Oregon. Loved them then. Still loving him now Thank You for all of the great music🙏🏻🙏🏿🙏🙏🏽❤️
"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music."
Aldous Huxley
This was so special, remembering the story Stephen shared about hearing this with his mother in the car when he was ~10 years old ❤️ Happiest birthday Stephen Colbert!!
What an absolute legend.
It's been my dream for a long time to have Paul Simon come to my birthday party. Stephen has all the luck!
Iconic. Wonderful performance. You could hear a pin drop.
Man so masterful on the acoustic guitar. No one come close to his finger style.
Great Paul Simon! I'm lucky to have seen him in a concert.
The years have certainly slip slided away. Grateful to have grown up with Simon's music in the background since it was him and Garfunkel.
It's never been in the background for me. Great music always takes center stage.
Superb and very poignant. Thank you Paul.
Paul Simon's music enchanted me since I was 13 years old. I have many of his solo albums.
Diamonds on the souls of her shoes is my favourite song of all time. What a poet, what an icon...
Oh man I saw the Graceland tour 2x every song etched in my memory. Paul Simon, no words. Great comment.
Treasured threads in the tapestry of lives.
And "Homeless"
Too many great ones for me to have a sure favorite, but if I had to pick, I would likely choose "The Boxer". but two other underrated oldies also are "Richard Cory" and "Hazy Shade of Winter".
A great album!
Bravo, Mr Simon. Sheesh I wish my fingers still worked that well. One of my favorite songs of yours. I'm singing along.
The absolute master
The man is a gift to humanity.
One of the greats. An underrated musician and genius wordsmith. Timeless.
The true definition of an icon and a national treasure.
Paul Simon turns his classic into an Epic . Truly amazing performance.
One in a billion this man is.
I LOVE how he recognizes that his voice isn’t the same as when he was young, doesn’t try to recreate that young cover, but uses it to introduce even more soul. It reminds me of Johnny Cash’s later work, some of which is heavily used in tv and movie scenes to emphasize the heavy. I hope we continue to hear this Paul Simon version.
He and Cash both made some of their very best work at the end of life as well. There are artists who have one or two incredible peaks in their career and then sort of fade creatively, and then there are those like Simon or Cash who just seem to have an endless supply of creativity. They just do what they’re born to do 👍
Paul is like a conduit of music from some other realm.
In his mature years, he sings it so differently than back in the early years. He has certainly been an artist of merit.
His voice is still beautiful for his age. Amazing!!!!👏
What an absolute treat! The line that says "a bad day's when l lie in bed and think of things that might have been..." has always seemed such a perfect description of what it can be like if you suffer from depression. THANK YOU! ❤
I love him so much. An American Icon and Treasure for all of history.
At 83, I discover that his voice drops me back to those years-you know, the ones we supposedly don’t really remember because we were stoned, but in fact live deeper within than most of us anticipated. Thank you, Paul.
And he's 83, too. Be well. May Paul Simon and yourself live on.
The man, the legend! So many iconic songs with Garfunkel and solo! Always loved ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’
If I had a theme song, it would definitely be 'Still Crazy After All These Years'.
My dad went to high school with Simon & Garfunkel in the late 50’s… the stories are wild 😮
Paul Simon has my heart forever
He’s still fantastic!
Paul Simon is the GOAT when it comes to music.
J'adore, guitare 1voix cela suffit. Un grand artiste. Aujourd'hui il n'y en a plus 😍👍👏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ bravo Paul
The Greatest American Musician of all Time.
I'm almost 60. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. It has a gospel quality to it NO gospel song has. It probably is one of the best songs ever. He is probably one of the top 5 songwriters and voices of any generation. Kudos!
I've always thought Paul Simon songs have a spiritual overtone...
It's a great song. Mom loved it but she always thought about it as sliding on the ice.
I’m half your age and feel the same!
We all got this wonderful gift for Stephen’s birthday. Thank you thank you thank you!! ❤
Paul Simon is brave to come out and sing with just an acoustic guitar. So authentic after all the glitz and voice falsifying machinations that musicians surround themselves with now. Thank you!
I'm pretty sure, going by the crowd's reaction, that they were fully aware of what they were witnessing.
Thank you Paul! Thank you Stephen Colbert! Real music, real tune, written and performed by a real person... still, you just can't beat it!
Outstanding 5+ minutes of network TV! What an incredible and simple performance.
I am enjoying reading the comments and reading people’s appreciation and memories. We will never have such an abundance of prophetic and insightful singer songwriters like we had in the 60’s.
I've heard him sing this many times. This was the most beautiful and poignant. ❤
He is truly one of the greatest of all time.
He's one of a very small group (including Dylan and Joni Mitchell) of top-level song writers/story tellers. One of my very first record albums bought in the '60s was "The Sounds of Silence."
I was one of the half million fans at the 1981 Central Park concert. Best time ever.
So many people will never appreciate this amazing artist. This does do many things to my heart.
it’s been a gift to grow up and be influenced by many great musicians emerging from the 60s- Paul has always been a muse of our times❤
Just Paul Simon and his guitar. Nothing else. Just pure talent and genius. Love it.
Inspiration. Poet. Master storyteller. Exceptional musician. Pure legend.
Paul Simon remains a music legend. Great ending to one of the very best The Late Shows in recent memory 🩷☮️
I' 62. My dear departed mothers favorite song. Thanks for the wonderful memory.
The GOAT
Angel of music! (and thank you Art for the lovely harmonies) but we know who was the foundation ❤
He is just great 😅
At 82 he's still got it! Amazing Creative...
Happy Birthday Mr. Colbert… what a birthday gift you shared with all of us…. THANK-YOU!
When he had Paul Simon on as a guest recently and interviewed him, Stephen talked about hearing this song as a kid, and the impact it made to hear his mom's reaction to the lyrics. 💕💝
'Rhymin Simon' was one of the best albums ever recorded. Every track is seared into my brain.
Planted in your brain? Does it still remain?
Agreed
When music makes you cry ❤
the greatest recording artist of all time
Happy birthday Stephen 🎉🎊🎁
How beautiful, and how different with the perspective of age. He is a treasure.
Thank you Mr. Simon (for many things).
Paul Simon, I love you and your artistry so much.
You made an indelible impression on my younger self.
These days I find myself playing & singing your songs more and more with my old ‘55 Martin gut string.
Thank you.
Sheer Musical Genius!
It is so beautiful to hear what can be done with only the human voice and a single accompanying instrument. So beautiful. Thank you, Paul Simon!
still have the greatest hits album from '72- thank you Paul
Great choice of song. I remember Stephen telling the story of how his Mum reacted when she heard this song on the car radio when it was new, a meaningful choice for him. ❤
I will echo all that has been commented.....and just add.....musical genius......thanks Paul
I am 78, and Paul Simon has been my favorite artist since the very first time I heard Scarborough Fair!
Saw Simon & Garfunkel live in Osaka years ago, 3rd row center. Such a great concert and such great memories.
Stephen must have loved this! Last time Paul was on, Stephen told him a story about his mother. She had gone into a store while he listened to the car radio, and she got in just as Paul was singing,
"I know a woman - became a wife,
These are the very words she uses to describe her life,
She said a good day, ain't got no rain,
A bad day's when I lie in bed and think of things that might have been."
And Stephen's mother just said - "That's so true." In that moment he saw how profoundly that simple verse touched her, and saw a side of her he had never thought about. You could tell it affected him.
Just…exceptional
Awesome 😎👍
Simply one of the greatest songwriters and performers ever. I think it must be about 55 years now I been a huge admirer and fan. Lucky to have seen him with Art at Wembley Stadium many years ago. In my humble opinion he’s up there with George Gershwin and Ivor Novello. (And the Beatles and The Floyd obviously, given my age!)
That is bloody amazing. What a way to play the guitar!
Getting through the early days of life - a Paul Simon song was special on the radio because you knew the song was going to a good song .
Whoa. Was just listening to this driving through Yellowstone two days ago and had to hear it again. Who knew.
That beautiful voice with those unequal lyrics. So good to see him💜. What a gift.
One of my first memories of music was hearing 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. I was five years old. I couldn’t get enough of it, to the point that if it came on the radio I screamed until my mother turned it up and I refused to leave the room or car until it was over. I didn’t know in 1975 that I would be a lifelong Paul Simon fan, but here we are, nearly 50 years later.
He's like a fine wine or cheese-better and better as he ages❤ Happy 60th Stephen!!🥰
An American treasure.
Paul Simon - national treasure. Thanks for the great music.
Amazing, this song written so long ago, sounds more perfectly itself the older Mr. Simon gets. What a gift his music is.
Love this song. Love Paul Simon's work. Still have my Bridge Over troubled waters album I got in 1970. He's a treasure. Cool that he came back and did this song for Stephen.
