I was driving a bus in London in 1990, it was the number 24. I was on my last run to Hampstead Heath late one night.. I had maybe 5 passengers on board. I stopped at Tottenham court road tube station just past the junction of Oxford Street.. There were about 20 black guys standing waiting for the bus, they got on for Camden Town, and they started to sing as I was pulling away from the stop, as Graceland was one of my favourite ever albums I recognised the voices immediately.. It was the African guys from the Paul Simon tour.. No mobile phones in those days, just the best memory of the best bus journey I ever did... I will never forget it.

In 1993 I was traveling through east Africa in a truck with a bunch of backpackers. Late afternoon set up camp in the middle of nowhere, no one in sight for miles, and when the sun went down we put this tape on (we only had a dozen or so tapes on the truck, Graceland was one of them). Within minutes about 7 or 8 kids from 6-15 yrs old appeared from seemingly nowhere, and we all danced around the fire. One of the great memories of my life.

I cut school in early 1987 to get in line outside of Radio City Music Hall to get tickets to the Graceland tour. I was number 300-something, but when I got to the ticket window, because I was only looking to buy one ticket, I got a seat in the fourth row, dead center. Simon, Ladysmith, Hugh Masekela and Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba rocked my 17 year old world. I was also high at the time, which just heightened the entire experience. I also saw them in December of 1987 at Madison Square Garden at a benefit show, so I really saw the Graceland Tour twice. It was magnificent.

I had a dream about my mom last night (she passed in '13) and she was giving away her possessions and moving. She had painted poems and large green leaves all over the walls of her apartment. I understood in the dream that she was moving to South Africa. When I awoke, trying to make sense of what I dreamed, I heard this song in my mind. She loved this song and loved this album. Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a male choral group from South Africa that sings in the vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbube. They rose to worldwide prominence as a result of singing with Paul Simon on his album, Graceland, and have won multiple awards, including four Grammy Awards. They were formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960 and later became one of South Africa's most prolific recording artists, with their releases receiving gold and platinum disc honors. The group has now become a mobile academy, teaching people about South Africa and its culture.

Many African musicians ended up with international careers, because of what Paul did. Not just the Ladysmith group. It also brought more attention to the fact that Solomon Linda wrote Mbube(The Lion Sleeps Tonight)and NOT a Broadway show tune writer hired on to provide an orchestrated version of the song.

My favorite memory was visiting Florida for the first time at 8 in the fall with milder temps. I was listenting to this albulm non stop as my parents drove around. Every beautiful woman I could see I was sining “Diamonds on the soles of her shoes”. What a time and what a wonderful albulm to have grown up listening to. I thank my parents eclectic taste!

It was at the Royal Albert Hall and the cheapest tickets were £200!!! Clearly the London elite do not consider them underrated at all!!! They are more costly than the Rihanna's and Beyonce's...with a small exclusive audience.

Bob Marley barely made it into the 1980s, so a collaboration with Paul Simon after the latter had discovered African music would have been virtually impossible. I'm a fan of both by the way. I bought one of the first copies released in the Netherlands of the Graceland album and all tracks move me to the bone, well lately in tears. It is not for any negative relation with the songs, it is just that the music moves me to such heights into an unconscious piece inside of me which simply cannot express it in words and then releases tears. And it gets astronomical heights when I see Paul Simon performing live with these fantastic South African musicians. Thank you, all musicians who contributed to the Graceland album, you unveiled a treasure to the whole world.

Thabo Sethipa Joseph Shabalala is indeed the founder and musical director of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, but he is the former onstage leader. He basically retired from performing in 2014 at the age of 73. The bulk of the performers currently are his sons Msizi (age 53), Thulani (49), Sibongisemi (45) and Thamsanqa (41). Thulani is now the lead singer, although Joseph (given name Bekizizwe - Joseph is one of five middle names) still is active in the creative aspects of their act - which is now entering it's 54th year).

Just passing through to pay tribute to Joseph Shabalala. My dad brought home Graceland when I was 8 or 9 and I've loved LBM ever since. My kids love this song for the whimsical melody and the booming backing vocals, but most of all for the dancing. I had wanted to name my daughter after one of their songs, but alas was outvoted.
Hopefully tonight you are sharing music with your wife and brothers.
