This is because Korean doesn't use gendered pronouns, it comes through in some of the honorifics instead both for the speaker and the subject (informal honorifics like "eonni" for girls to older girls, "oppa" for girls to older boys, "hyeong" for boys to older boys, "nuna" for boys to older girls; but then the informal honorific "a/ya" for younger people and formal honorifics "ssi" and "nim" are gender neutral).

The translator(s) correctly translated 'unnie" as feminine because, as you pointed out, in Korean it's used by girls to address an older girl. What should be taken into account when translating Korean into English, though, is that non-gender specific words like 'dongsaeng' /become/ gendered when translated into English. It's not only jarring to read masculine pronouns for people who don't use them, it can be considered rude to leave it as a mistranslation when it is easily fixable.
