      @@elijahherstal776that's utterly ridiculous and false. The game is fun and playable out of the box, people churned out plenty of homebrews after playing only a few games, before having enough traits, equipment and higher levels (meaning more and tougher monsters).

    I originally thought weird that they are re-using these random miniatures for heroes in Darktide. They are all part of a larger set, so they need to make a separate new sprue mold for them. And if they are going with the expense of a new mold, they might as well do new miniatures. Model design costs pittance in comparison with HIPS mold tooling.
    But today they announced the release of this and apparently it's gonna be available to order from GW direct, and will ship worldwide, which is a first for these 'bookshelf games'. So part of me is now wondering: maybe they are deliberately sabotaging the models in this so that they can gauge interest in releasing these games in wider distribution. This might be a test run to see if it's profitsble to have these available outside the US and Germany, and having unique miniature sculpts would mess with the data and number crunching - they wouldn't know how many units they sold because of unique sculpts for 40k collector, and how many sold on the merits of the actual game.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  หลายเดือนก่อน

      They announced this game a week ago. At that time they hadn't established how they intended to distribute it. They have since established it will be available direct and from selected retailers. "Selected retailers" suggests they are going down the Barnes and Noble route as normal, but this time they are also going to make them available for sale direct from GW, which is probably a response to the many complaints that the bookshelf games are usually region locked. It's still uncertain if the game is going to be available from other stores and online retailers like a normal release, so it's possible any sales figures are still going to be very skewed. So, I'm not sure.
      Maybe you are right, but I still think it may just be the case they wanted to reuse miniatures, didn't have any individual figures they could use, and decided grabbing four and retooling them for a new sprue was still cheaper than also designing four new miniatures before doing that tooling.

    Definitely! it s a bummer they didn t include the heroes in the cover. As a darktide fan and boardgame geek (but not fan of warhammer miniature game), it s a pity. But maybe if they make it world wide available something worth to try.

    I understand why these are done as a team vs a simple AI, but just for once I wish GW would pit into their boardgames a way for a player tontake full control of the enemy forces. That I think would add a lot to any game play.
    Either way, I can see myself picking this up if the price isn’t too ludicrous.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  หลายเดือนก่อน

      GW really still specialise in the two-player head-to-head games that make up their core lines, so when they do these little side games I think they try to capture a different market. A few of their other games still have enemies controlled by a human player though. They did it with Shadows Over Hammerhal, and Blackstone Fortress had an option for the enemies to be controlled by a player. Games like Space Hulk, Lost Patrol and Crypt Hunters have enemies controlled a player, but once again those slide back into the two-player format.

      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may be right. I think they have managed to show the same board layout, painted and unpainted in multiple shots now, and I find it hard to determine anything much about the gameplay from it. I am expecting some kind of Kill Team (Fire Team) and Blackstone Fortress mashup. Depending on the rules it may be a fun little game, but there is the risk it ends up being like that Space Marine board game they chucked out a few months back.

    When it comes to the solo/coop side of things GW just doesn't want to know, even when it's a minimum of effort to put things right. Dark Tide looks like Quest meets Kill Team, using two underworlds boards? Apparently it will be direct from GW, so hopefully it will be reasonably priced and available.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately, it does sound like buying direct will be the only option for people outside of the usual areas where these games are available, and being available direct means you are going to be lumbered paying full RRP from GW. Even as a seasoned board and tabletop game player, I love these smaller, bookshelf, gateway games. I am looking forward to this one as Kill Team interests me but primarily for a more rpg solo narrative perspective that doesn’t officially exist (although the fan made Acolyte is very nice). I plan to use these miniatures in the aforementioned game as well as any potential to expand this game like I have for Space Marine Adventures Doomsday Countdown which I am nearly finished with the 2nd expansion (BBG) but my solo, army-of-one, exploration variant of Space Hulk keeps jumping to the top of my list as it is a much larger project. I do agree most of these small games lack scope for expansions, I have found that some are ripe for expansions that GW will never provide and if they do it will not be as good as some of the fan expansions that are available.

      There is an article written by a journalist that this game isn’t for “us.” It’s for the video game players who aren’t familiar with the tabletop hobby at all. That is why all the minis are just retread plastic and nothing new. It’s getting tiresome hearing we are no longer welcome into the hobby that is for everyone, per their own words.

      That doesn't make any sense to me. I haven't seen that article so don't want to comment on the position they are taking too much, but that sounds like a weak defence of the game's format. While these games are aimed more at onboarding new gamers, rather than appealing to established players, the videogame is popular with both demos and should offer something for everyone. The Chaos Sorcerer would need to be replaced with a new boss level miniature to defeat. This could certainly have been an option for GW that would have allowed multiple levels to defeat as well as some character progression through the use of more powerful equipment that could be found during the search for each teleportarium.
      I’ve wanted to reskin Assassinorum into an Old World game for quite awhile, replacing the Imperial Agents with Dwarves and the Chaos faction with Skaven that over ran a Dwarven mine to secure the warp stone unearthed by the dwarves. Some day, maybe.

      I don't disagree that GW look like they cut a corner here with the miniatures. However, 3D printing is really its own hobby. It's not something everyone can do or wants to do. If you live in an apartment with children and pets its not particularly feasible or safe to run a 3D printer, and it isn't something you just plug in and instantly get good results from. It takes some practice and experience. I live in a decent-sized house and work from home mainly making content about board games, and even I don't have the time and space to run a printer. So, while it will be the solution for some people, I don't think it's as simple as saying "print it yourself."

      I think it’s important people realise there’s more to it than plugging it in and magically getting better miniatures than toy companies make. As for me, even if I had a dedicated space that was ventilated and safely away from my children and pets it’s not something I’m interested in so I don’t need to talk myself out of anything. People who follow my restoration stuff, which is where I would see printing being the most useful for me, know that as much as possible I like to use official components. Preservation in those instances is generally more important to me, although it’s not always possible. Still, as I have said on the channel before, it’s great we live in a world that has all these different options.
