So I was wondering for graphic design, does the portfolio has to have really excellent artworks or...? How would you suggest we structure the portfolio? and how much are grades important for getting into such unis?
hi! thanks for reaching out. grades-wise, mine weren't the best and while i do think that for art/ design majors they don't matter as much, good grades do help you get your foot in the door/ help your chances, especially if it's a pretty competitive school. as for structure, each college will have slightly different portfolio requirements but for calarts specifically, the structure is whatever order makes the most sense to you; a lot of people say they either put their best work at the beginning or the end but it's totally up to you! lastly, i think "really excellent" is absolutely subjective. submit work you're the most proud of and that should be it. don't overthink it too much. hope this helped and good luck!

hi yes! so for that project i believe i handwrote it and scanned it into indesign and removed the white background. i'm not an expert on font-making though but i know there's definitely a lot of other good youtube videos that show you exactly how to do this! you can search "how to create your own font" and there should be quite a few good ones. hoped this helped!

thank you so much!! i actually did not design the font (it's bebas neue) but you're typically allowed to use fonts from other graphic programs if they're free for commercial use so make sure you keep a lookout for that!
this question might sound a bit dumb but im new to this entirely and kind of scrambling to put a portfolio together. The requirements were kinda vague so are like movie/tv show poster redesigns accepted or does that fall under plagiarism.

yes! in most applications they'll ask for a description of each piece you're submitting. also i'm not sure if this is the answer you're looking for but i submitted these in normal jpeg files. hope this helped!

not at all! i believe that calarts actually wants to see that you're skilled in BOTH traditional and digital work, so as long as you have a good mix of both you should be fine! i personally had more digital work to show than traditional art so that's why i ended up putting more of that in my portfolio. hope this helped

not at all! you definitely don't have to put exactly what i showed in the video haha but if the schools you're applying to have portfolio requirements make sure you meet them/ make work for them! as for prototyping, there are a lot of great videos on youtube that show you how to make mockups for your design and you won't have to actually have your design made in real life. just search "how to create mockups for your design" and there should be a lot of good ones. hope this helped

I know this is an older video so you may not see this comment, but I was just wondering about what programs you used for each of your designs and if that was something you included in your portfolio? I think one of my biggest concerns with constructing a portfolio at the moment is having my work not come across as professional because some pieces were not created in what people think of as "industry standard" programs, do you have any thought on this?

I’m interested in applying for graphic design majors but I’m scared because I do primarily traditional art. I can do digital, and I am working on improving it, but my portfolio would be atleast 50% traditional. From everything I’ve seen online, there seems to be little to no traditional art in applications. Is it okay to work primarily in traditional? Or should I focus only on digital?
