    This is a video in the How To Calibrate Your Gas Monitor series by Ideal Calibrations. All you need is trusted calibration gas (of course we recommend Ideal Gases brand), a cal cup, a regulator, the adaption fitting, and tubing.
    If you have a problem during your calibration, give us a call or send it in for repair here:

    MSA Altair 4 Calibration Guide:
    Want to calibrate the MSA Altair 4 or MSA Altair 4x? Here's how:
    1. Turn the MSA Altair 4 on in normal reading mode. Do this by pressing and holding the center button.
    2. Once the MSA Altair 4 is in normal reading mode, you need to send it into calibration mode. Do this by pressing and holding right beeps at you and the screen asks you to zero the monitor.
    3. Now that the screen is asking for confirmation, press the center button once to confirm. This will send the monitor into zeroing mode. Now is a good time to set the monitor down, and grab your calibration gas, regulator, and calibration adapter.
    4. Open the valve on your regulator. This is a very important step so you do not ruin your calibration gas cylinder. Now screw it in to your calibration gas cylinder. Close the regulator once you hear gas spewing out of it. This is the signal to know your regulator is good to close. Continue screwing in the regulator until it stops. Do not overturn it.
    5. Attach the tubing to the hose barb on your regulator. Make sure the tubing is also connected to your calibration adapter.
    6. Wait for the screen to come up asking for you to apply calibration gas. Once this screen comes up, press the center button again to confirm. Screw the calibration adapter in to your gas detector. Once it is screwed on, turn on your gas.
    7. Make sure your calibration gas values on the screen match what is on your calibration gas cylinder!
    8. Once the calibration procedure is completed, turn your gas off and remove the calibration adapter from the MSA Altair 4. The screen will go back to normal reading mode within a few seconds.
    9. Congratulations! You have officially calibrated your MSA Altair 4 gas monitor. Make sure to record these readings in your calibration log!
    Calibration Gas for the MSA Altair 4 Gas Detector is:
    20ppm Hydrogen Sulfide
    60ppm Carbon Monoxide
    58% LEL Pentane (1.45% Volume Methane as a Simulant)
    15.0% Oxygen
    Nitrogen Balance

    Buy the Regulator here:

    UPDATE:
    If you get a bad O2 sensor, or the unit won't zero, you have two options:
    1. You can either send it in to us and we'll fix it for you (estimate $241 + ship) by going to idealcalibrati... and filling out the form.
    2. You can order a generic brand oxygen sensor from us (same type MSA uses in this unit) for $120 + ship by going here: www.idealcalibr...

    Thanks for this, I have to calibrate my four every month and watch this every time. Yours is the easiest to follow along with. well done James.

      Thanks Senor Alec! Appreciate the kudos from you. I'd like to say it took a long time and lots of professional equipment, but I think for this one we duct taped a self phone to the top of the repair bench. Glad it helps!

      @@Idealcalibrations For your next video, do a step-by-step description of everything you see when you turn it on. Pause the video at each new screen and give a brief overview of what we're seeing. Just a suggestion. I mentioned your videos to a guy on my ship and he said they showed your videos in his Competent Person class.

      I like that idea, I'll give it a shot. Maybe I could do a video that shows one or two different brands instead of pausing it for each monitor on startup. Once you know what one of them is telling you, it's easy to know another brand 99% of the time. Thanks for the feedback! We just had this come up recently in a training, and I hadn't realized that most people just ignore the screens because they don't know what they mean.
      Give your guy a shout for me! Always cool to hear the videos help people out. We share the feedback with the other people at the shop too.

      @@james2039 Thanks. we're in the shipyard now, so i am using mine daily. Made me realize how complex these are, and how little i know about them. And it's something i SHOULD know, when sending someone into an empty ballast tank.
      As for brands, MSA is the only ones i've ever seen in 20+ years of working on ships, LOL. It never occurred to me there were other brands!

    I watch this video a few times a year to help remember the procedure for this meter. We use it as a backup so it’s not done as frequently as the main guys so I get a little fuzzy on it. Very easy to follow video. Thank you.

    great video.. i have a question.. how much the gas bottle last?? i mean... if the bottle contains 29 Litres of gas, how much gas is spent in every calibration?.... If I use the detector just 1 or 2 times per month, for example in confined and underground areas... how frecuently calibration is required?
    thanks beforehand....

    I just want to confirm before i spend the money that if it fails calibration test because of the top left number then I need to buy that sensor? Or is there something I should try before I do buy it?

    • @Idealcalibrations
      @Idealcalibrations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael, I would say most likely. Make sure to check the calgas and that it's set for 58% LEL Pentane and also that your monitor is set for 58% LEL and reading in Pentane units. Sometimes people screw with the settings and that can mess you up. If all that's checked off I'd say yeah, time for a new sensor. We have them in stock if you need one.

    Possible issues:
    1. Your calibration gas is expired and the H2S has faded.
    2. Someone screwed around with the calgas settings in the setup menu.
    3. One of your sensors is dead.
    Which sensor is showing up as failing? You can email me from the contact page of our website, I'll help you troubleshoot it.

    After I span Cal, should the last calibration date change as well in the unit?

    • @Idealcalibrations

      Yes it should, if its wrong. most likely need to check the calendar on the unit, we see those off fairly frequently.

    Would it hurt to use a 0.5 Liter/Min regulator instead of the 0.25 Liter / min?

    • @Idealcalibrations
      @Idealcalibrations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You really should use a 0.25lpm (the tubing thickness MSA uses isn't really built for 0.5lpm, delivers the gas too quickly and that can cause a pressure buildup on the sensors which will change values), but if you're in an absolute pinch the 0.5lpm is better than not bumping the monitor.

    What is "Span Calibration?" It says that after the Fresh Air Setup

    • @Idealcalibrations
      @Idealcalibrations  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +HOPE Days Span calibration is calibrating the sensors with gas as shown in the video. Zero tells the monitor "this is what good air is like" and span calibration basically tells the monitor "this is what bad air at "x" level is"
      Do you need help walking through the process? We could set up a call for you on Monday to help you if you like. Our number is 734-956-0539.

    hi, I have a question for you, i hope you can help me
    I have an altair 4x and when I sent it to calibrate it showed up an error, the Ex sensor wasnt working so we bought a new one and the people who calibrated the device told me that if they calibrate the device again another sensor could fail. The question is... is it true?
    Thanks in advance

    • @Idealcalibrations
      @Idealcalibrations  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gabriel,
      Sorry for the delay. Calibrating the device takes very very little of the sensor life away, and it should be done regularly. Don't let anyone ever scare you into not calibrating your MSA Altair 4. If you need help installing the sensor or anything and want me to walk you through on a video chat let me know and I'll give you a hand. How old was your 4X? That LEL sensor may have been covered under warranty.

    How long does a bottle of calibration gas typically last?

    • @james2039
      @james2039 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically I figure one full calibration is about 1 liter of gas, so if you get a 34L, it's about 30 calibrations, 58L about 50.
