Kind of a bummer they cut Maelor from the show, it’s more gutwrenching that she picks him because Jaeharys is the heir and then Cheese fucks with Maelor about mommy wanting him dead before Blood lops off Jaehaerys’ head.
The idea that the surviving child knows their parent chose them to die over their sibling would really mess with their head. It was much darker and intense in the book.

Nobody expected the brutality to be shown, obviously. But what was expected, and what is fair to expect, is maintaining the elements of the scene that made it so gut wrenching.
A mother forced to choose one son over the other. A mother begging and pleading with everything she has for them to be spared, putting her own life on the line over theirs, only after every possible alternative is explored does she relent and choose which one has to go…only for them to disregard her choice completely and choose the other one…forcing her to go on living while the son she chose…continues living looking her in the eyes knowing she chose him to die instead.
All of that could have still been included without showing the brutality..instead we got a fast finger point and awkward shuffling out of the room.

The shock of Blood and Cheese wasn't from the boy's death, but rather from Helaena's agonising choice. In ACOK we see many children die horribly, so it's not unusual in the story, but what shocked me while reading F,&B was how could a mother choose between her 2 young children? I imagined more pleading, more fear, more everything.

How to fix this scene: Have Helena beg a lot more, but ultimately point at Jaeherya. But the element of Blood and Cheese choosing the opposite child remains, and they kill Jaeherys instead. And instead of her running out, Helena stands frozen as the camera focuses on Helena's face and her look of pure horror as we hear the sounds of Jaeherys being killed and his head hacked off. Then cut to Alicent and Criston in bed, and suddenly they're interrupted by the sound of Helena's horrifying scream. Then cut to them bursting into the room with several guards, only to find Helena still screaming while rocking back and forth with Jaeherya in her arms and drenched in blood. Then cut to Alicent's horrified face, followed the cut to black and credits.

The show really did not do a great job of portraying the brutality of the situation or the emotional depth. I remember watching the red wedding episode with a friend...after it ended we just stared at the screen in silence. Her sister started bawling lol. When I watched that episode last night, I didn't get that feeling at all. Hell, I didn't even realize this was supposed to be a big event. But if Alicent were tied up, an innocent servant and guards killed, and Helaena were forced to choose between her awake and aware sons, I guarantee my jaw would've been on the floor. Especially as someone who isn't as into HOD as I was GOT. That would've really showed everyone that this show isn't f*cking around. And they don't even have to include any of the really bad stuff/gore toward the children. Yeah. I didn't like the actress's rendition of a terrified mother who has to choose which child dies.
I don't know if it's her or the writers or both, but the scene made me laugh. When she steadfastly pointed to the boy it was almost like she was saying "here, take this one, he still wets his bed"
I mean, there was no Sophie's Choice feel to it, it felt like "take this one and be done with it, I want to grab some sleep before sunrise".
In the books she doesn't run with the other children, she embraces her dead one.
The scene was poorly done. Didn't feel for the mother, she didn't scream (which in that situation is uncontrollable), she didn't plead for the child's life or try to bribe them.

IMO, as a show viewer, never having read the book. I still found the scene horrifying and disturbing.
Though I get why the book readers would find it less shocking and criticize the changes. I think Haelena's reaction in the show was very well executed, to the actress credit, I could feel the shock, terror and extreme anxiety bottling up inside her without the need for screaming or immediate breakdown. In real life, people react this way to traumatic events and It's clear she will end up forever traumatized.
On the other hand, I guess the writers should have kept Alicent gagged and tied up in the room watching to make it more brutal, and the assassins switching to killing the other kid, would have make the scene more twisted and the trauma more justified.

Something that has to be mentioned is that doing it like it was described in the books could be very scaring for a child actor. I mean those kids were very young and if they included Maelor, that kid would be even younger. So being this age and having a grown man who already looks and talks threatining enough, hold a sharp object at your throat and then hear the screams of the woman infront of you who literally beggs them not to kill you can be beyond traumatic. And then imagine they would have included the severed head. The Red Wedding was brutal but all of these actors were grown up and could distinguish between scene and reality but a child that young...

They could have done the rape threats, Alicent in the room being held hostage, Helaenas handmaid killed -you don't need the kids on screen for that at all.
The only thing they could have not included is them telling Maegor: you're mom wants you dead, but even then they could have just creativly shot it so that the kid isn't actually in the scene to hear it.

When she was asked which kid was the boy, I was expecting an agonizing "Sophie's Choice" moment for her as a mother, but I guess the actress playing Helaena is no Meryl Streep ;-). We actually don't know what her acting range is since she's been an underused cast member so far. Other than the devastatingly well crafted scene of Aemma's death by Caesarean-birth in last season's very first episode -- a scene that's still as memorable as it is difficult for me to rewatch -- the showrunners just aren't great with the more gut wrenching moments. It reminds me of last season when Rhaenys and her dragon burst through the floor and killed a bunch of common folks -- it was intended to be a shocking moment, but just felt like an insult to the viewers' intelligence, which is always a pet peeve of mine.
And don't get me started on Allicent and Ser Cristen hooking up. It was implied last season that he carries a torch for Allicent, but I wish it was left ambiguous. The entire reason for Cole's hatred of Rhaenyra was that she failed to realize how seriously he took his oaths as a King's Guard and in his eyes, treated him as just her "_hore". Yet he's perfectly okay with being a side piece for the dowager queen and mother of the king he's sworn to protect? Make it make sense.
I like the idea of Allicent's new found freedom to put her own desires first, while also being hypocritical given how pious she's supposed to be. But there wasn't anyone else scandalous enough for her to hook up with ... like one, or perhaps both, of the Lannister twins? 😉

For all those who said HBO didn’t want to show a child get his head cut off in House of the Dragon and say all the other children on the GOT sufferings were off screen but we still knew or heard what happened to them … let’s back up to the season that Joffrey had all Robert Baratheon’s bastard children killed… especially the little baby ripped from a mother’s arms crying and the king’s guard slit his throat and then have to watch king guard carry the dead baby by the foot. Maybe HBO wised up on HOTD but people forget they approved all sorts of children’s death and suffering. Don’t believe me look it up on TH-cam and find the horrible video… 😢

If they dont want the book’s version of what blood threatens jaehaerys’ twin with, then they could just substitute it with threatening to kill both sons if haelaena does not decide. Then to spare maelor’s life. Because telling maelor about haelaenas preference is 50% of the significance of the event. But i guess the child actor’s parents dont give the permission for their son to experience trauma even though it is acting

Small children have laws regarding that, especially because they are too young to understand the difference between acting and the real world. BUT you can just creativly cut things so the kid doesn't hear it. That's always an option. Small children in general are only in few shots because they have only very short work hours and that's why they tend to get cut out of as many shots as possible, why not make use of that.

people keep saying that the importance of the scene is that maelor is chosen to die as if it was a important thing to the characters when it really isn't. Helena commits sucide after the red keep is caught, and the next time we see Maelor, we see him trying to get away with a kingsguard and get killed anywya. There is NO discussion about the kid's mental state or whether he no longer liked his mother, it was just GRMM being edgy by having the evil assassins be evil assassins.

@@stevenhedge2850 i forget why he tries to leave? Is it he is restless due to trauma and runs into trouble instead of staying withing the safety of red keep? And why did helaena gave up living? Is it because of guilt? Because if yes, then it does matter what BC did to maelor, to wit, it destroyed both candidates to aegon ii’s thrones and the progenitor, greatly diminishing the chance of aegon ii’s line continuing

@@SomeUserk nope no trauma at least not from blood and cheese. he left because the blacks took over king's landing and Larys sent the kids away with the kingsguard to try to reach to saftey. The kinguard with Maelor gets found out by commoners, and they kill him and Maelor. Helenea commits suicide after the red keep is taken, but we are never told why she did it, though there are whispers that the blacks had her killed, whispers probably caused by Larys strong to cause trouble. For all we know, Larys strong had her killed to cause trouble. meaning both were just victims of circumstance than actaul characters

@@stevenhedge2850 well either way sowing discord in a family is a good strat to undermine it. And the show’s halaena just pointing at firstborn son without much struggle is susceptible to criticism that it makes no sense, is too easy, or that daemon’s vengeance has plot armor. The book’s version of how halaena tries to preserve the firstborn for the future of her house makes more sense

I think with the ommission of the third child this was well done...the absolute terror is felt and the echos of it can be felt...choosing to delete characters has been a big got problem from the beginning so knowing that and seeing it come to life still hit home in a terrifying way showing that gore may not be necessary to truly shock and hold our memory hostage

"The Boy". So was he a decoy or her actual son? I get it.. Dance of the Dragons is told by a third person source, but the liberties that the writers take haven't made anything better as of yet. I'm able to overlook their take on events only due to how interesting the story is.

I am reading a lot of the comments and I'm shocked that everyone is forgetting one fact about the show. The show is the true telling of the story and the book is based on hear-say which in fact George stated as such before season 1 aired. Everything in the show is supposed to be different on how events went down in the books. Plus, if you think about it more deeply the tragedy of Blood & Cheese was more impactful in the show than it was in the book. It also makes more sense in the show than in the books.
