Escaping Korea's Pacific Cult | 101 East

  • A man sits on a chair, surrounded by a group of men. One by one, they take turns to hit him.
This is how the Grace Road Church drives the evil from the bodies of its followers, according to former cult members.
101 East investigates this secretive Korean doomsday cult that has lured hundreds of followers to the Pacific island of Fiji.
Followers like Lee Yunzae and his wife and children.
He says cult members were beaten and worked for no pay in the church's businesses.
After a year, he escaped with all of his family except for his eldest son, who remains in Fiji.
"Because I took my kids to church, the fact that he's still in Fiji really hurts me. That's why I want my son to wake up to reality and get out of there," he says, as he embarks on a desperate mission to rescue his son.
This investigation shows how the group continues to operate, despite its founder being convicted of fraud, child abuse and assault.
In Fiji, Grace Road has fostered close ties with local politicians and won lucrative government contracts.
Fijians who worked for the church say they were treated like slaves and are fearful of Grace Road's powerful connections.
In a leaked video, its founder, Shin Ok-ju, has been filmed preaching about the country, saying: "We will rule, govern and conquer."
101 East reveals the inner workings of the South Korean cult that is tearing families apart.

The worse thing is, the Fijian public has known about this for years now but the government isn't doing much. As long as the government gets a huge slice of the pie, everything is looked at as 'fine'. That's just how it is here. It's sad to know that money is more important then human lives, especially here in our country

As a Korean, I am so deeply sorry for all Fijians, especially those who suffered the direct consequences of the Grace Road Church operating there, exploiting labours. This is beyond shocking. I vaguely heard about this cult that makes the followers violently hit each other and sends them to Fiji, but didn't think that they would have this much influence on the Fijian government and the society. The view of shops they operate disgusts me. Can you imagine walking into one of those shops unknowingly? Sickening. Absolutely horrific.

They kept their heads down all the time planting and picking vegetables. I knew during that time something was wrong. It is a shameful act by the Fiji Government. The cult is the vehicle to get finance (cult members) then they buy out government by funding builds and projects before getting into government - making Fijians slaves and servants to them. China is doing the same in Samoa. They use Chinese businesses (leasing Samoan land for 100 years) as the vehicle for financing the take over of Samoan government (by making government buildings and projects).

If the boy is over 18 or the age of majority in Fiji then not so easy but he may be under age so a good Fijian lawyer might well get a court order to have him forced back to his father when he likes it or not.

I lived in Korea and I noticed, that Korea in general has a strong sects like influence by diverse churches. Although christians my represent only 28% of the population, it is clear that they do everything to appear more and infiltrate many important institutions in politics, academics and especially media.
Even every help organisation for North Korean refugees are controlled by christian sects to make sure the new citicenz become cristians.
Also every foreign korean organisation in other countries who a offering Korean community services are all christian driven and try everything to you to get in. Once you are in, they do evrything to keep inside.
Also the youngest hate wave against muslim refugees on Jeju where strongly managed and organised by christian sects.
I'm really concerned that (south) Korea is going on a wrong way, influented by western hate.

I haven’t watched this yet but I’m just so shocked. Because the few videos that I have seen from them seem to be 100% biblically accurate! They know Jesus isn’t God, they understand that salvation is by works and faith/faithfulness, they understand that eternal life is part of the core of the faith they understand many things! That takes serious study, open mindedness, scholarship or perhaps even the spirit.
But then I hear that they think the Holy Spirit is a person that just got born a few decades ago (not to mention that masculine pronouns are used of the Spirit/helper in John Unless I’m mistaken)? And now apparently there is cult like things going on and abuse. Just wow
Edit: Okay just saw all the crazy violence, lying, slander, and even near kidnapping. Wow.

Grace Road members behave a lot like those in Scientology, those members who are higher up in the organization. This is sad and disgusting. God does NOT approve nor has He commissioned His people to behave this way.
