Teams like Slovan and Sparta can play each other. In the previous format there's 0% chance for them to meet and play in the CL Proper. They always would have been Pot 4. This bring back memories from before the 90s, when the CL was a simple elimination tournament with no seeded teams and the champions of Czechia and Slovakia (bad example, they were a single country, but you know what i mean) can actually play each other. Or the champions of countries like Norway, Sweden or Denmark? Or champions of Romania and Bulgaria? Or Austria and Hungary? Or, hell, even surprise teams like Girona and Brest can now meet. This is what made CL the IT tournament back in the day. The epic duels between teams like Steaua, CSKA or Red Star can happen again.
It would be fun (cough: "profitable", UEFA) to let teams apply for these derby type pairings within reason. I suspect the big clubs might get upset about having worse odds in fixture difficulty when they have better odds to draw English, Spanish, or German mid-table teams making it to 3rd or 4th
The difference between the CL back in the day and this new format is that a game between Steaua and CSKA would have definitely meant something. It was a straight knockout, the winner progressing and the loser going no further. This format they can play each other at the start and still not have any idea how their round is going to go, or play each other at the end when their fates have already been sealed. These duels won't be so epic when, for example, both teams already know they are out before they've even kicked off.
If can happen again and I agree. Overall it is a good change. Unfortunately most central and Eastern European teams don't have the funds to properly compete anymore. Or rather, their funds have stagnated while the funds of western teams have exploded. It would be nice to see teams like Steaua and Red Star make runs again though
@@Im_helpless actually now that I've seen your previous comments on this channel, I realised you're here to get that manly anger out. So I dunno, maybe attempt to get a life
I like it. Celtic didn't get drawn in a group from hell for a change. Got Leipzig at home from pot one. Aston Villa from pot 4 the only unlucky algorithm. It's much the same as the new 12 team CFP. Ninth to 12th will be bricking themselves in late November
For me i found it a lot more interesting with this current format with big teams can actually verse each other and still have an impact if they get automaitcally into the playoffs or into the early knockout stage. The whole scenario though of more games is the real killer here though. More matches, players are more tired and has less quality.
Honestly I really like it. Every game means something now, you can’t just drop down to the Europa league and get a second chance, and you cant just play your 3rd string team against weaker sides, because you’re competing against everyone. Also the fact 18 games are happening in 1 single day on the final day, adds a lot to the competition and makes you actually feel like you’re playing for something, instead of just waiting to get by. You can’t just win the first 3 games and play your B team for the rest of the competition because every point is crucial. My only issue is that teams are potentially playing 17 games.
On the reverse I think a big team could be more likely to play a weakened squad in this format. You're more likely to risk a weaker squad if you have another 7 games to make up for a bad result instead of 5. Or, and I think more importantly, you know you can get seeded for the RO16 just for finishing in the top 8, instead of actually having to win the group.
The best thing about this format is that every week there’s at least a game between two big teams, while the old format, you were stuck w whatever teams were grouped with each other. Some groups are more exciting than others. This current format makes every tie important since you only meet each team once before the KO stage.
Dawg I was surprised that a Scottish side actually tried in Europe because like the Scots never seem to try with the exception of Rangers like a couple of Europa Leagues. Like Scottish sides are to Europe as Sheffield United or Norwich City or Burnley are to the Premiership. But in saying that hopefully you try against Champions League calibre sides and hopefully we see sides like Celtic and Aston Villa and Brest and Sparta Prague in the knockout stage because we need new blood. Like it’d be a bloody waste if it ends up having a final four of basic bitches like Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich and Manchester City like Basic Bitch O’clock y’know what I mean. I do like the fact that I slate y’all when my Scottish side is Annan Athletic.
The concept of final match day drama is great when permutations are clear. Crowds go mental when another team scores cos they know it’s kept them up/won them something. In all likelihood we’re gonna have so many teams vying for the final spots that if all 18 matches are played simultaneously I can imagine it’s gonna be a bit too chaotic and players won’t even be allowed to celebrate if they win/lose/draw until well after full time.
@@isaacjones5687 hmm disagree I think I can't see how I'll be enjoying it if I don't have a clue what's going on. We'll see though I suppose, hope I'm wrong!
they should add a column in the table with the sum of the pots of the remaining opponents. so you can see whether teams already played the strong teams or not.....
Oh yeah, this! Another thing to makes following the table (and predict the table after next set of games) even harder. It's actually pointless to look at the table right now.
Wikipedia sort of has this with the results highlighted in the cell of the opponents name. Man City and Inter are the only pot 1 teams to play each other and played to a draw, highlighting each-other's cell with yellow.
I think im in the minority that likes it. I know the complaint is some games may be less exciting in the league phase but the knockout phase has always been the actually exciting part of the UCL anyway. Also the fact that Pot 1 teams HAVE to play 2 other Pot 1 teams is exciting as well
It's still a knockout competition at the end of the day tbh. Which is entertaining to watch but also not as good at deciding "the best team". Like the last time Chelsea won it, they were the fourth best team in England, but they're the best team in Europe? Doesn't really figure.
@@Billiamwoods Chelsea won against Atleti, Real & City and beat the team that beat Liverpool on there way to that UCL. You don't do that if you're not in the conversation of best team in Europe. We have always crowned the UCl winner as the champion and best team in Europe. Can't move the goalposts because of league performance. That chelsea team was built for knockout competitions which is why the were always in a domestic cup final.
My problem with the format is that it gives luck way more importance than it should have. If I have a hard schedule, I get Real Madrid and other harder teams, it seems unfair to compare me with teams who didn't have to play against them. Or why should I only play home or away against a team. Maybe I could beat Real at home. The ranking is no longer an apples to apples comparison. And let's be real, UEFA rankings aren't the best in evaluating the relative strength of a team. It's too much a matter of luck. Then let's not forget that the season schedule is now absolutely loaded. I miss the times where there was something like 2-3 months between seasons. A season felt like a big deal. Now, it's just non stop and it might be killing the players (even literally).
@@Billiamwoods Yes it is good at deciding the best team, the best teams should win knockout phases and handling the pressure that even a simple mistake can have you out of the competition. Also you compete against the best teams in Europe, so yeah the team that wins the champions league is the best team in Europe that season.
Another big pro is that teams from smaller competitive leagues get more of a chance to show themselfs. Teams from like the netherlands, belgium and poland are almost always in pot 3/4 giving them a hard draw in the old format. This way those teams can really show how good they are bc everybody is equal now in terms of the draw
If that was played like in the Conference League (6 games instead of 8) I would say it's the best change ever, now it's good but increased amount of games is mehh
The new format means that the Pot 3 and 4 teams actually have a chance of progressing and the Last 16 isn't basically already decided when the Groups were drawn. No one ever paid attention to group matches before. Kind of wish they just did it like the Youth Champions League, where it is only 6 games and 3 pots
You can't genuinely mean those words. PSV, Lazio, Real Sociedad and Copenhagen all advanced to the last 16. 3 pot 1 teams didn't make it through. And in the Champions League before that it was 5 (Inter Milan, Dortmund, Napoli, Benfica and Club Brugge). Pot 3 and 4 have weaker teams, they aren't going to magically qualify at some very high rate with any format that involves playing football. Group stages are great, with every result having a clear impact. When Man U lost to Copenhagen, it was a 6 point swing from a direct rival. Now it'd be far less meaningful because both teams could go through/go out. And the fact that there are only two results per game means you can clearly see what you need. The league format doesn't favour smaller teams. With more variety in games and more games, you can't exploit a struggling team and need to be more consistent.
@@mnm1273The truth right here. One or two bad results before could screw the bigger teams. Now they basically don't matter. What we'll see from now on are generally that the bigger teams will make it through every single time. With basically no upsets, ever.
Im kind of in the middle here. There definitely have been very interesting groups in the past. PSG, Dortmund, Milan, Newcastle for example was very tense but there were also groups like City, Leipzig, Red Star, Young Boys. Lets be honest: The first two spots were decided before the first kick off. In the new league phase we will no longer see the tension of four comparable teams in one compact group but we will also no longer see teams just chilling their way through the first half of the tournament, since even the best teams cannot be certain to reach the top 8 plus there is also the exact placement in the tournament tree to play for, whereas previously all group winners were treated equally. As for the surprises: Both sides are true, it matters what you focus on: There are 8 more spots in the knockout phase, which means that yes top teams are virtually guaranteed to reach it but the chance for underdogs also increases and once they are in the knock outs they „only“ have to beat a top team over two legs, previously they had to best them over six group matches. I will have to see it playing out. For now I am underwhelmed. UEFA made a big deal about every game mattering and I know that is true but the league is so massive that it feels to me as if every game was played in a void, however that will most likely change once the standings get more sorted. Imo there are advantages as well as disadvantages to the new format.
Other than extra matches for the players I think it's a much better format for everyone else. For "neutral" spectators more matches between big teams. For small clubs chances to actually get some points and money now that they also play pot4 teams, same with midlevel clubs. Maybe it's a bit more questionable for the top clubs as their schedule technically got a lot harder, but they should still be racking up some easy points against the bottom 2/3 of the league so a couple of bad results aren't the end of the world for them. Things will stay more open and fluid right until the last match concludes, in previous format you often had games that didn't decide anything. Plus I really hated how 3rd placed teams used to get knocked into a lower competition where they were often immediately favorites to win the whole thing, so getting rid of that is great imo.
My first impressions is that the league will be better than the groups. It gives big and small teams a more balanced phase as you can no longer have groups of death. For a club competition i think this is an improvement but i hope this is not used for international tournaments. The groups format over a short period is superior to the league format. The league format will work well for schedule that is 4 months long.
In the Conference League the league phase has only six matches. I think it should have been the same for the Champions and Europa League. Every advantage the new system has, and I think there are several things to be legitimately excited about, still applies with six matches per team. The only thing that would be affected is the money making and that is all that matters unfortunately. Still, I like the system but hate the two extra matches for no other reason than money
I've been playing as Preston in FM24 and just got to the CL for the first time, 2 games left to go, i'm somehow top (Lost 1, Drew 1) and i've already qualified. I guess all the teenagers get to play in the CL for two matches which feels weird. Then again, it was the same as the two lower leagues.
I'll admit I'm intrigued to see how this goes, but we're looking at the best case scenario here where we expect everything to go according to plan. Should there be some background drama like a players' strike happening or Man City getting found guilty and relegated or something like that, who knows what might happen then. I genuinely hope we get this season to work out well.
As fior tracking the final day - multi-league broadcast; quite popular with premier league or polish league; for CL every gameweek there is sth like that as well already, so at least in front of the TV it should be quite readable
So far the new system is surprisingly ok. You get a set of games to play, everything is counted up in one big league instead of 8 small groups. I like to imagine it kinda as a regular league that gets stopped after matchweek 8. Sure, getting a grasp on who's playing who is more tricky but since everybody is using apps for that anyway it shouldn't be too difficult. I don't like there being more games but so far the concept at hand seems fine (though it would be something you could do with fewer teams just as well). I think it hides a lot of neat little changes that have been glossed over in the (justified) hate against more matches. Unfortunately we'll only see with time which of these changes are actually worth anything and which are just novelty.
@@krzysztofpaweczyk1515 Well there are multiple. Sofascore, Flashscore, Onefootball and the like. You can usually select a team or a competition to follow (or multiple) and the app then tells you when the next match is, the results of previous matches, standings etc. You even get stats for matches and players on some apps and matchratings for how well those players did (but the matchratings are more like a rough estimate. I would take those with a grain of salt)
I think the way to improve this and make it more fun would be if the league works on Swiss system like in chess. Only first round is drawn with seeded and unseeded teams and every other round is drawn round by round pairing the teams with same if possible (or the most similar) amount of points. That way there will be less complaints about easier or tougher draw and storylines would be better as in last rounds teams that are fighting for those places would go head to head
I agree with doing chess type redraw to condense ~9-24th down to a final 16, ideally from 6 games rather than 8 of them. It would remove the need for a 2 leg play-off and as you say, even out complaints about the draw. The proper Swiss system doesn't help with sorting the logistics of balancing 3 over lapping European tournaments using the same days with up to 3 teams from the same city. Drawing several games at once gives more flexibility to balance the fixtures (cough tv money cough). It is annoying that this "Swiss system" for football isn't using the best feature of the Swiss system in that it dynamically cuts down a large tournament into a traditional bracket
Yeah scheduling would be more difficult if it used real Swiss system. And for that we have to remind ourselves that UEFA did this mainly for money and won't really change it if it would bring any complications or risk of losing money because of unexpected scheduling. Anyway I don't think it would be something that can't be fixed
Having seen this champions league format for the past few decades, it is a lot of fun and preferable. When I go to other continental competitions and it is just a small group of four, it feels so lonely and less interesting by comparison.
I'll wait and see how this format plays out, but I'm still confused to why they mucked up a format that worked for this thing? (I mean I know why, more games, more money), but it's not as fair a comparison Vs. before. Saying that, I was unsure about the new Euros format & now I love seeing sides that'd normally never get out the groups have their chance, so I look forward to this showing me the errors of my ways in a few months XD
One big positive imo is the fact that rng will be less relevant. There is luck involved when picking the 8 opponents in the league stage, but this format should avoid the "super groups" (i.e. inter, barça, tottenham, and shaktar donetsk) and the groups that nobody cares about with a single proper "big team" and a bunch of smaller ones, where the big team does not need to care about the last 2 games. Those 2 extremes always happened with the old format and it really got stale for me.
Respectfully, I don't think AC Milan should realistically aim for top 8 at the stage the club is at... Top 24 for sure, but nowadays top 8 is just to much to ask for them.
They did it for two reasons ultimately though. Money absolutely - yes. But it was to stave off the potentiality of a super league cropping up again any time in the near future. This is effectively a super league - all be it with a lot of teams that are going to suffer massive scuddings.
I don't hate the new format layout. What I don't like the extra 2 group stage games, why couldn't they keep it as 6. The extra knockout is interesting but again its another 2 games, but it wouldn't be as bad an idea if it didn't have the extra Group stage games.
I think the new format is way better, some actual jeopardy. Its true that storylines will be harder to track but my god in 6/8 groups in the old system the storyline would be more boring than old mcdonald and his farm.
First off, God damn Sparta, why do you have to do this well when it could have been us (FCSB) instead? We played them in the qualifiers and almost came back from 3-0 down after halftime in the second leg to end it 3-2 in a match were we were getting yellows despite being fouled all over the place (for “diving”/complaining, one of them could have even been a penalty but I guess VAR said it s outside the box or something), them not getting yellows for timewasting the whole second half but our GK getting two across the tie (one in the first leg for “timewasting” at 0-0 in the 42nd minute, the other in the second for mildly complaining about a foul not being given (man got literally stomped on after releasing the ball) late on while running back towards his goal) but it is what it is, still nice to see Eastern European teams doing well and we do have the EL to play for. As for the new format, it really is a lot of a mixed bag. Pot advantage is gone. Big teams play each other more (same for small ones) so it makes for better TV and they can trip each other up, yay! But shouldn’t you be rewarded for being a higher pot? Also, more matches do tend to favour bigger teams in general plus the players being mad about it (but let’s be real, they d still be playing friendlies in Antractica or something if all these competitions weren’t expanded lol), boo. There are 4 extra teams. Two of them come from qualifier, yaaay! 2 come from the top 4 leagues, booo (though they are interesting teams this year). As you said, it also ruins prediction videos and following the competition in the early stages as it is simply too much to keep track of which is another negative factor in favour of backloading the drama at the end but even that just ends up being too much imo. 18 GAMES AT THE SAME TIME (yes, they will be all at the same time). With everything on the line and many spots decided by GD as you said as there are just too few games to properly split teams apart. That s literally taking double the teams in the Bundesliga and ending the season on matchday 8. How do you follow that? Even with a live table in from of you FM-style it s tough to follow nevermind refreshing Reddit for news irl. And there is also one other change, apparently the knockout rounds will be decided by league placement mostly with only a small draw still left to decide if the 9th place team plays the 23rd or 24th team which is weird and can be argued either way. And then there is the scheduling. CL being played on Thursdays this week ruining “We play Wednesdays and Tuesdays, you play Thursdays” fan banter, boo. But each competition getting one exclusive week also means that smaller teams get more attention that week by being the only European games on, yaaay! But then that means that EL and ECL fans have to wait longer to see their teams in action, boo. And just why does the ECL alone get only 6 games while everyone else gets 8 in the exact same format? Overall, I am leaning more towards hating the changes but we will see how it truly plays out irl. BRING ON THE EUROPA LEAGUE SO I CAN SEE MY TEAM PERFORM THOUGH!
It's going to be absolutely hilarious if a team whos last game is mathematically meaningless, realizes they can potentially skunk a rivals placement (knocks them down to 2nd group, or from 2nd group seeded, to unseeded. Or right down to 3rd group) by losing, or losing big. It's more likely than not, that goal difference is how last in group 2, vs top in group 3 is determined, for example. if atletico Madrid is locked into group 2, would they start a milkman in goal if Salzburg winning hurts girona... or celtic beating villa big, moving arsenal from a seeding in gr.2, to unseeded gr.2. I definitely hope so!! The chaos would be absolutely hilarious. I wouldn't have been so excited for this, if they hadn't got so high on their own supply of "this makes every match matter". If a team has a pot 4 team scheduled in the last 2 fixtures, there's a real good chance they're playing a team already completely eliminated. A team that's surely focused on domestic competitions instead, to get back to Europe next year. I was certain they would schedule intra-pot games in the final 2 weeks, to park already eliminated teams away from critical games, and presumably match up teams fighting within a few places of eachother in the table. But they didn't even bother to do that. Just begging for a team to lose out of spite.
Anyone who thinks this format isn't gonna be chaos in the final couple fixtures, fire up your football manager save, go look at the simulated CL table from fixture 7, and fixture 8, and ask yourself "could any team locked into their group after fixture 6, or 7, create chaos by losing big". 2/3 seasons in the save I looked at, was a big 10/4. Arsenal losing big to Marseille knocked Tottenham into group 2 in one of them 😂 I mean it didn't happen in that sim because football manager still cannot simulate the kind of toxic atmosphere rivalries like spurs/gunners have. But would arsenal start saka in goal if it screwed spurs? God I hope so.
When I first saw this format in Football Manager, I hated it......but having simulated MANY seasons with MANY different teams from MANY different countries......yeah it's not awful! Takes a bit of getting used to, but it's not awful!
Round-robin group stages for club competitions have been asinine since it's existence. Plus, Euro League as a safety net always felt like the bully arriving at the playground to ruin the fun for everybody involved. Two excellent riddances.
It always annoyed me that the Champion's League wasn't contested in a proper league and just by the champions of the nation's top league... At least they've sorta done one of those, I guess.
I honestly hate the new format, not because of the format itself, but because of the increased games for the players. Players and Managers have been saying for a few years now that they're playing too many games and it's leading to increased injuries and burnout in players ... so what have FIFA and UEFA gone and done? INCREASED the amount of games in a season! Nations League is completely unnecessary and 10 extra games for whoever reaches the Final, World Cup gets extended for 1 extra game, Champions League gets 4 extra games taking it to 17 games for reach the Final ... that is on top of, for England for example, 38 League games, plus potentially 1 Charity Shield game, 5 EFL Cup games if you're already in European competition and 6 FA Cup games. So, say someone like Rodri, if Man City and Spain managed to reach every Final for City that's a potential 77 games, and we're not including things like the Club World Cup which would be an extra 2 games if they reached the Final, taking it to 79 games, and then add on International games for the Nations League, European Championship or World Cup qualifying (plus pointless friendlies) and you can completely get why players are getting pissed off with it. UEFA (and domestic leagues) could help to alleviate the pressure by scrapping the Squad Registration limits though, allowing more rotation, giving players more chance to rest, but then, from the other side of things, it's up to the Managers and Club Owners to be responsible too!! They too have a Duty of Care and should be rotating their players more. A 25 man squad, if you have 2 players registered for each position, allows you for 2 complete starting line ups, plus 3 extras, so there is also a big issue with Managers and Owners
Allowing for deeper benches really gives additional advantage to the oil money teams which are already favored. I expect this to force (certainly pot 3 & 4) teams to chose between UCL and domestic league/cup matches, which will introduce some variety, but ultimately I don't expect a pot 4 team to ever reach the semi-finals, there is just not enough top level players.
Bruh, I was so mad while watching Red Star vs Benfica. We were much better but Benfica got 2 cheap goals. First a lucky bounce into a defense fuck up and second a free kick (that was really fucking good) that the keeper didn't jump at all.
I think the new system is massiv better. Groups was boring I literally did skip 90% of groups games. This is way more entertaining. Also the games are already higher quality. You could have been vs Zagreb in the old system too, but you had none pot1vs pot1 games. Now every team has two. Sry I like this much more
Has UEFA ever released information on how all these extra billions they're making are being used.....? Are they solving all the world's problems, or the big wigs just getting half a dozen villas, yachts, etc per year?
Fun thing is... they don't have to explain themselves to us. It's not like they're elected politicians to answer to the public. They're more like CEOs who do whatever they want and only answer to a small group of people.
I like the new format in general, but having the prospect of 4 more games in a season if you finish 9-24 is insane. That doesn't sound like much, but if you play in England it means you can conceivably have to split your time between four different competitions in December-February
@Billiamwoods some teams will try and get dumped out of the league cup by playing reserve or bench players they might have to do what LFC did split there squads in half. Domestic cup and Uefa ,PL squad
@anirudhmenon9099 most group games were crap in the previous format. Bayern would've won 9-2 against whoever they played regardless of whether it was in this league format or the previous 8 groups of 4 format. We need to finish the whole cycle before we can determine whether it's a success or not.
the new format makes me less interested in watching the games live. Its too many games. I'm gonna stick to highlights unless theres some jeopardy involved.
Pot1 teams facing each other is not that interesting once you realize they can advance with 3-4 wins. If you're a pot1 team you beat pot3 and pot4 teams and give zero shits about what happens in the rest. They won't give their all. This is the Champions League, the best of the best. You want to see amazing teams playing fantastic football, not half arsed teams strolling around. Quality over quantity for me 🤷♂️
Top 5 vs 6-8th can be the difference between playing Madrid/Man City in the semi's or the quarters. Those are the stakes in addition to the traditional performance incentives for Wins, Draws, and now, league placement. Chump change for most of the big teams, sans the "super league" hold outs these days
I hate it personally. Needlessly adds new games which is eventually gonna force domestic leagues to shrink and cups to become even less important to these superclubs. It’s pure fucking greed. This combined with the new club World Cup is ridiculous.
There are proa and cons for me. A big Pro is that now every one has the same Chance of getting hard or "easy" oppnnents, which seems fair to me. Downside: there are to many games for the teams that have to Play in the Play Offs. The 8 games u Play before that are ok in my opinion, but 4 more games for the Play off teams is way to much.
If this is successful then maybe the Premiership can do this as well but like home and away, have these millionaires work for their money. This is why I don’t care about overworking top flight soccer players, these assholes get paid like £28 billion a week. Work for it.
1 issue I see already is Barcelona lost yesterday, they won’t make it to top 8 but will easily get in the 26 or whatever it is, I don’t need to follow them now in the group stage. If a big team loses in a group of four there is a much greater possibility that they won’t make to knockouts. Barcelona still have 7 games to turn it around and 2 matches against pot 4 teams (weakest teams) when upsets happened before it really affected the group and standings, it doesn’t really matter now.
Not really. In the old format Barcelona would play a pot 2, 3 and 4 team twice, in a sense this is the same except they play 6 different teams PLUS they play two pot 1 teams PLUS it’s a league format so other sorting mechanisms can come into play. I’m not saying the big teams are going to struggle to get through but there’s clearly more jeopardy here.
Just to explain - yes, the final day of the CL group stage (29 January) is indeed 18 games happening simultaneously. What a day
Bundesliga has that for IIRC its last two match days too.
Without fail the most exciting days of the year.
@@LiftandCoa That’s how it used to be. Unfortunately that has been changed for a few years to only apply to the last match day.

The whole scenario though of more games is the real killer here though. More matches, players are more tired and has less quality.
Using the conference league system with still only 6 games with 6 pots of 6 for the Champions League would have been a great compromise.
So far I don't hate the format. Time will tell.
Can't wait for a head-to-head controversy at the end
The best thing about this format is that every week there’s at least a game between two big teams, while the old format, you were stuck w whatever teams were grouped with each other. Some groups are more exciting than others.
This current format makes every tie important since you only meet each team once before the KO stage.
Skibidi Zealand trying to break into a new age group with new lingo
Today I feel like a zoomer
As a Celtic fan, the new format is fantastic...stop the count!
Yeah right? No need to keep going, let the players rest.
As a Slovan fan, I think you still have a lot to prove against other teams :D
Aston Villa - Young Boys in the UCL, you gotta love it
The concept of final match day drama is great when permutations are clear.
That happened last year in the last years formats but instead of the couple positions changing every position can change in a 4 team group,
I think this format will be perfect for the UEFA International qualifiers.
I'm not sure the last day being chaotic is a positive. It's going to be so hard to keep up
Thats what makes it special.
Why? Just look at the fixtures.
Wikipedia sort of has this with the results highlighted in the cell of the opponents name. Man City and Inter are the only pot 1 teams to play each other and played to a draw, highlighting each-other's cell with yellow.
I don’t mind it tbh
It puts the “league” in champions league
Also you compete against the best teams in Europe, so yeah the team that wins the champions league is the best team in Europe that season.
this system calls for A LOT more consistency from teams
Another big pro is that teams from smaller competitive leagues get more of a chance to show themselfs. Teams from like the netherlands, belgium and poland are almost always in pot 3/4 giving them a hard draw in the old format. This way those teams can really show how good they are bc everybody is equal now in terms of the draw
Its giving those five minutes where spain and germany were going out in the group stage
We did
Im kind of in the middle here.
@@DetBareMikkelNope. Smaller teams will get more games with teams at their level
Fun Fact: Bayern has not lost a group stage match since 2017. Wonder if they can keep it up for 8 games.
Barca and Leipzig are the only Pot 1 teams to lose this match week, that's one less giant for Monaco and Atletico
Freu mich schon auf den letzten Tag, das wird das absolute Chaos 🤣
My first impressions is that the league will be better than the groups. It gives big and small teams a more balanced phase as you can no longer have groups of death. For a club competition i think this is an improvement but i hope this is not used for international tournaments. The groups format over a short period is superior to the league format. The league format will work well for schedule that is 4 months long.
Nice kit, Zealand
On every day that Zealand doesn't run, another spot is added to the Champions League.
I think I'm slowly starting to like the new format.
I've been playing as Preston in FM24 and just got to the CL for the first time, 2 games left to go, i'm somehow top (Lost 1, Drew 1) and i've already qualified. I guess all the teenagers get to play in the CL for two matches which feels weird.
Then again, it was the same as the two lower leagues.
i actually like the format.
Z you better start running because im coming for you lil bro 🗿
As fior tracking the final day - multi-league broadcast; quite popular with premier league or polish league; for CL every gameweek there is sth like that as well already, so at least in front of the TV it should be quite readable
A German (or maybe Austrian?) broadcaster is already doing this with the 4 or so simultaneous games that happened during this week
New format is very confusing , but very beneficial for smalller clubs and avoids games where teams park the bus as much
So far the new system is surprisingly ok.
Apps? What apps? Like, names please. :)
You didn't need to do a hypothetical on bayern's draw... they did draw barca and psg... 2 tasty matches.
Awesome shirt Z!

Zippedy Zeaaaaaaaland is baaaack at it again 😏
Respectfully, I don't think AC Milan should realistically aim for top 8 at the stage the club is at... Top 24 for sure, but nowadays top 8 is just to much to ask for them.
They did it for two reasons ultimately though. Money absolutely - yes. But it was to stave off the potentiality of a super league cropping up again any time in the near future. This is effectively a super league - all be it with a lot of teams that are going to suffer massive scuddings.
Last day of the group is the day after my birthday

I don't hate the new format layout. What I don't like the extra 2 group stage games, why couldn't they keep it as 6. The extra knockout is interesting but again its another 2 games, but it wouldn't be as bad an idea if it didn't have the extra Group stage games.
This is what I call the NBA/EuroLeague on grass
I think the new format is way better, some actual jeopardy. Its true that storylines will be harder to track but my god in 6/8 groups in the old system the storyline would be more boring than old mcdonald and his farm.

UEFA want 24/7/365 livestreaming of matches.
Sure, let's do that, with A.I. generated matches.
Overblown. Over complicated. Overkill!
Only if you're overly moronic.
How is it over complicated? Complicated maybe if this is your first time ever hearing about it.
@@isaacjones5687 I just prefer straight knockout really. I preferred it when it was the European Cup.

Unpopular opinion this new format is better I will die on this hill
Tell the players to take lower wages
Bruh, I was so mad while watching Red Star vs Benfica. We were much better but Benfica got 2 cheap goals. First a lucky bounce into a defense fuck up and second a free kick (that was really fucking good) that the keeper didn't jump at all.
On the other hand, I was watching Dinamo ZG and am thinking now about selling my tickets for home games 😅. At least you played a competitive match.
I don't think the keeper jumping would've made much of a difference... but yeah Red Star put up a fight I didn't expect either.
In the old CL format Brest could have never played Graz , instead they would get pummeled by Bayern !
I think the new system is massiv better. Groups was boring I literally did skip 90% of groups games. This is way more entertaining. Also the games are already higher quality. You could have been vs Zagreb in the old system too, but you had none pot1vs pot1 games. Now every team has two.
Sry I like this much more
Or are you referring to Pol Pot or pot luck lunch or something.
Yes they have. Google search 20240322_circular_2024_13_en.pdf if you are really interested.
The more games the lesser the quality of each game is. I dont understand why people cant grasp that
I like the new format in general, but having the prospect of 4 more games in a season if you finish 9-24 is insane. That doesn't sound like much, but if you play in England it means you can conceivably have to split your time between four different competitions in December-February
who decides on that?
maybe you don't understand, because you can't phatom a different opinion :)

the new format makes me less interested in watching the games live.
Why use pots if its a league anyway. Just keep the rules where you cant play a team from your federation/country
I really think it's way better than the other format. That said, a lot of injuries are coming, boys.
Its 2 more games not 4

I found it… boring. None of the teams did well really. The added quantity of games is literally diluting the quality of them, and I don’t like it.
Not as fun as listening to zealands excuses for not running
Have you been smoking pot. Did you enjoy Amsterdam a bit too much.
