Maybe others already pointed out, that most of the new chinese boutique lens brands (ex: 7artisans, TTartisan, etc) are actually working with the same company to produce their lenses (IIRC it's maybe shanghai optics ltd or called JD optics,my memory is a bit faded on this one) and this lens was maybe an oem design by the manufacturer and both brands picked it up
On the topic of rear attached filters, my Opteka 500 Mirror takes rear attached filters and came with 3 different small 30.5mm filters. A pack of 3 where included with the lens - skylight, nd-2x and nd-4x. The front of the mirror-lens being two wide to attach a filter. Keep posting your reviews as they are informative and occasionally entertaining.
Yeah, it's not a new idea that came with Chinese lenses. Old Russian fisheye lens Zenitar 16mm F2.8 also used to come with rear filters (but colour filters originally).
It's exciting seeing all these new wild lenses keep popping up. I guess it's cheap enough to produce lenses these days that smaller companies can make some crazy glass. I have an old 70s Nikkor 15mm lens that uses rear filters because the front element is gigantic. I only have a yellow filter though, which is moot for shooting digital photos.
I can give you more insight on this lens: The Filter thread is made of plastic, not too bad too screw on. Sharpness is not on the Level what Chris showed on the 7 Artisans. Maybe i got a bad copy. Sharpness falls off quickly from the center. In Crop mode on A7RIII (13.5mm) the edges are barely acceptable. I would say the sharpness does well until a 16mm field of view but anything wider than that, feels like a toy lens quality.
I was under the impression that Brightin Star was the ODM providing Pergear lenses, odd. I'd like to see someone write up which of the chinese lens brands are selling designs to each other!
I’m very curious myself about which might be directly affiliated, and which, if any, are going to the factory that made the designs for one and said “make a version for us too” like I’ve heard happen in other industries (though not sure if it’d happen here, as I have no idea if any consumer lens companies even contract or all assemble in house). Throw in a corporate flowchart or stereotypical conspiracy theory pinboard, for extra pizzazz
as for pricing, what are your sources? I see 407$ on their website (at least since yesterday when I looked it up) and yes, ND filter is included, which should make it 70$ cheaper than 7artisans Edit after watching 7Artisan review: I would also love to see comparison with fullframe Laowa 9mm f5.6 lens if you would be able to do that as those are probably quite direct competitors and it would be helpful to see whether additional 200$ gives you some significantly better performance
When I learned the language several decades ago, the comma was not a matter of correctness but one that changed the meaning of that sentence. If you are addressing 'everyone' and suggesting they keep shooting, the comma is needed. If you are not specifying who you are addressing but telling them that the object of their photography is 'everyone', there should be no comma. As usual, verbally, the comma is represented by a short half pause. In the last 70 years or so, English has been made simpler in several respects partly to make it easier to learn to an international audience. I, for one, still embrace the English subjunctive but kids today are taught that the 'Fiddler on the Roof' was illiterate (if I were a rich man....).
@@dougsmit1 sad to say but it’s as My Fair Lady’s “Henry Higgins” lamented that the English don’t teach people to speak English. (“There are even places where English completely disappears. Why I’m America they haven’t used it in years!” How right he was. Je suis americain. Ahem.) In this case I was indeed poking a little fun in the direction of our ever-charming Welsh host.
I bought the 7artisan one and was just blown away.... 9mm should be well into fish eye territory... but the distortion is relatively minimal (yes there's still plenty of distortion but that's nowhere near 9mm) Don't know if it's more expensive in the US but i bought mine for €325 straight from 7artisan when it came out
...and not available to those who shoot Canons. Laowa claims that their lens was not up to their standards in RF mount which makes me wonder if the other brands would possibly have a similar problem on RF (possibly due to AA filters???). Reviewers who spend more time dressing up their presentation rarely cover such matters.
there are few compelling reason to go Brighting Star. One is price of a lens (407$ vs 599$ thats not insignificant), other is ability to use filters and even 10stops ND included in package (with laowa you need filter holder which is another 150$ for 100mm filter or 35$ for 100x150mm filter frame holder)
@@anupew3276 I would never go that low in optical image quality like the Brighting Star, I do not even thing I will go as low as te Laowa. I never use video, and I eve use any kind of filters.
Lol this lens (and the 7Artisans one, too) is a bald theft of Laowa's world record 9mm f5.6 RL (the "C-Dreamer") lens. Now, I love Chinese optics. I love when a manufacturer does their own 'version' of another manufacturers popular lens -- I don't even mind when a manufacturer licenses a lens from a rival lens manufacturer (like the Zeiss 15mm 3.5 AEG being co-opted by Leica and the like) However, it's hard to see anything this brings to the table, besides being made shittier, and looking worse.
Why a theft, because of the same (in name only) FL? This lens is cca 10mm in comparison, that is about 1mm narrower (which makes a big difference if you compare them side by side). Of course it's good that there are alternative options. Do you know how many 50mm lenses there are? And, unlike in this case, 99% of them used to have more or less the same optical design in the past (like almost all vintage 50mm F1.4 etc.). Laowa may have motivated them to produce this lens, but there's always a first... Be happy it's also not the last and only option, that's good for your wallet, as well as for the future designs.
not a theft, completely different optical design (11 elements 8 groups vs 14 elements 10 groups in Laowa), different minimal focus distance, (20cm vs 12cm on Laowa). What they bring to the table is simpler design with significant price difference (currently Brighting star is 407$, ND filter included, Laowa is 599$, officially discounted from 799$ and even filter holder is optional of additional 149$)
@@emrefaydali Personally I would go Brightin Star over Laowa. I am not a professional and with my style I would realistically use it maybe twice a year so even if difference in optical performance is significant and worth the price difference for people that use wide angle lenses and have customers to satisfy, its not for me and my style. As for that difference, I havent seen any direct comparison between those two, so hard to tell how much different they perform.
you cannot get 34mm filters anywhere if wanted a 3 or 6 stop shame you would need to find another hack to use nds if you want to use anything other than the supplied filter.
I love how you said you didn't want to know.

I like the printing on this one. It makes it look like a cine lens.
Nice filter feature.

I'm waiting for your review of the brightin star 35mm 0.95
Recently I found this lens in their official website but I was waiting for reviews. The ND filter option is interesting

Maybe a samyang/rokinon/bower/walimex situation?
Honestly, no idea!
i would like to see a comparison between this and 7artisans and 10mm Laowa

Let me clarify. Commas are important albeit we only use them in written form. So your last comment is, "keep shooting, everyone", correct?
Yes..

Hiya, from The Bahamas. Do you think that it is sharper than the Sigm 8-16mm that you gave a reve review to, back in the day? 😊
Yup. Although they're different in that that Sigma lens only offers a cropped APS-C image circle
I like the exterior look of the brighten star better.
Lol seeing how you struggled to screw in the rear filter while praising that feature was hilarious
The ND filter feature is fantastic, but doesn't look easy to screw without smearing the filter with finger prints. Maybe if we had a tool to do it?
Wear a vinyl medical glove, or screw it in, then clean it with lens paper and solution.
where i can buy this lens
Which Camera Raw profile do you use for lens adjustments

And wider

What is the additional stop between 5.6 and 8.0? 6.3 or 7.1?
just one stop between 5.6 and 8.0, there are thirds of stop at 6.3 and 7.1
I have the little Brightin Star / Pergear 10mm MFT F5.6 semi-fisheye. A fun little MF lens.
I may just spend a bit more only for that yellow colour 😅 I really like black and yellow combination
