    In this series of videos I cover jazz piano voicings. I'll go through a number of different voicings which will make any jazz song sound strong and professional.
    This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Quartal Chord Voicings. This is simply a chord built in 4ths rather than 3rds. Building chords in thirds is considered old-fashioned and simplistic. While building in 4ths is considered much more sophisticated and ‘modern’.
    However, Chord built in 4ths are much more ambiguous. They give a very suspended feel - like playing sus chords - and don't sound like they need to resolve.
    Quartal Chords can be a number of different chords, depending on context and the surrounding chords.
    Even though we are build chords in 4ths we can still analyse them like regular chords.
    Standard Quartal Voicing use 5 notes - but this can be dropped to 4 or 3 or increased to 6 - and are generally played in the middle register of the piano.
    In this lesson I go through the 'generic quartal chord voicings' and explain how to find your own quartal chord.

    If im playing 2-5-1 quartal chords in the key of F# do i need to consider the "generic quartal chords" for good sound, what if those are not considered; the augmented forth and so on, would it still be wrong?

      That's very interesting question! I don't think it will work with this kind of harmony! I think you will have to change the voicing structure for that to have effect.

    Does it make sense to use quartal voicings in classic swing music, or do you think they sound out of place? Do they fit in better in modern styles of jazz in your opinion? (Or anyone else's for that matter). P.S. Love the channel. Thanks for so much great free content.

    • @WalkThatBass
      @WalkThatBass  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I generally reserve quartal voicings for more modern jazz and jazz blues. It may sound a bit out of place in a Dixieland band. Doesn't mean you can't use it. It's for you to decide how close you want to stick to the genre. Thanks for the comment :)

    Is it possible to use quartal harmony in II V I for minor key's.????

    • @WalkThatBass
      @WalkThatBass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, definitely.
      A Half Diminished chord is the same as a Dominant chord a Major Third lower.
      For example:
      Dm11b5b13 (D F Ab C E G Bb) = Bb13 (Bb D F Ab C E G)
      So it has the same quartal voicing.
      Dm7b5 = Ab D G C F
      G7b9 = Ab D G B F
      CmMaj7 = G C F B Eb

    Hi in the example of Fly Me To The Moon quartal chord started on the 5th(E) of am7 how do you know where in the scale of that chord to start building the quartal or is there a rule please?

    • @WalkThatBass
      @WalkThatBass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi Susie. A quartal chord should be between 3 and 6 notes long.
      Let's say our chord is Am7, so then the avoid note of that chord is F.
      Let's say that the melody note over that Am7 chord is C.
      So essentially, you just build your quartal chord down from the C (going down in 4ths obviously) and make sure you do not play the F.
      So building the chord backwards we have:
      C, G, D - we can stop there if you like, so we have a 3 note quartal chords. or we can keep going
      C, G, D, A - 4 note quartal chord
      C, G, D, A, E - 5 note quartal chord
      C, G, D, A, E, B - 6 note quartal chord
      All of these are fine.
      But you couldn't have a 7 note quartal chord in this case because that would include the F (the avoid note) (and also you would run out of fingers)
      C, G, D, A, E, B, F (avoid note).
      So quartal chords are pretty flexible. They can be anywhere between 3 and 6 notes. It's up to you how big you make then depending on what kind of sound you want. You just have to make sure the melody note is on top and you don't play an avoid note.

    Thanks for all these amazing tutorials, Ive probable made more comments like this on other videos but i will keep on making them to add to your growth.
    I'm a bit on the nerdy side and wanted to understand more about why the different quartal chords are possible so I took your "picture" and made this:
    photos.app.goo.gl/AJQAAjYGvvzUQNUM7
    It's your sheet but with more info. Hopefully somewhat correct. But it helped me to see it visually!
    L1-L2 = Left hand - R1-R2-R3 - = Right hand
    Black and grey numbers are scale degrees (I believe thats right way of saying it?) according to the major scale. If there's a chord under, thats a possible chord, if its a red number, thats why it isnt a possible chord (That red number is from the view of that chord). So if it is a B9 in red, than that quartal voicing would contain that chords b9 which is why it isnt possible.
    Maybe someone could take a look and see if most of the things are right? There are some things im confused about. Maybe i need to rewatch this video one more time. Thanks!

    Great stuff. Thanks! I'm just a neanderthal guitar player, but why in the first quartal chord (E, A, D, G, C) can it not be named a type of G chord (Gsus69)? I'm sure there's a reason for that to be eliminated, but I need it explained...

    • @clevelandplonsey566
      @clevelandplonsey566 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As you add more notes to a chord, more names become possible. That could be a Gsus4 add 6 add 9. Or even a G13 no B no F (that would probably be stupid unless it’s resolving to C in a non elegant way.) You’re not wrong to think Gsus but if I was gonna try to name it in the context of the video I’d call it some quartal chord. If the C is going to resolve down to a B then I would call that a Gsus4 chord.

  • @clevelandplonsey566
    @clevelandplonsey566 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since no chord in the C major scale is an avoid note for a quartal F major chord, and since the C major scale is enharmonically equivalent to the F Lydian mode I suppose for whatever quartal major chord X you can stack up fourths starting on any scale degree you want of X Lydian. DMaj or the fully extended DMaj 13 (#11) could be spelled “quartally” as D G# C# F# B or C# F# B E A or E A D G# C# F# etc starting from any scale degree in D Lydian. Right?

    • @SpaghettiToaster
      @SpaghettiToaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you stack perfect fourths only, you get a locrian scale. To get a lydian scale, you need to include at least one tritone.

    • @clevelandplonsey566
      @clevelandplonsey566 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpaghettiToaster yeah I said fourths not perfect fourths- C to F# in C Lydian is an aug fourth but still a fourth. For a cool Dorian quartal voicing I like 1 dim4 natural 6 9 12 dim15 - an example of dim4s... although the only reason you’d spell the chord like that is to underscore that it is a quartal voicing

    • @SpaghettiToaster
      @SpaghettiToaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@clevelandplonsey566 You can in fact construct all the modes of the major scale from quartal stacks, depending on where you place the tritones.

    • @clevelandplonsey566
      @clevelandplonsey566 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpaghettiToaster heh yeah I know. It’s been awhile since I left that first comment and I think I’ve got a good grasp of music theory now

    • @clevelandplonsey566

      @@SpaghettiToaster maybe a better question I have though is: how can I/ can I use quartal chords “functionally” (using like the western tonal harmony meaning of “chord functionality”)

    • @dudorotomy
      @dudorotomy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems like it would depend on context. I think his point is that the rule of staying with fourths remains unbroken if you define aberrations as diminished fourths or augmented fourths. The "thirdness" of the interval is pretty covered up to my ear...

    • @SpaghettiToaster
      @SpaghettiToaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dudorotomy Quartal chords by definition do not include diminished fourths, for the very reason that they are enharmonic to major thirds and will always be perceived as such by anyone used to tertian harmony (=everyone).

    Why not show the basic 4 note, Quartal Chords using the notes of the C scale (C,D,E,... etc.) as the root (bottom note) for the sake of simplicity ? The explanation in this video is a bit fast and somewhat arcane.
