Okay, ASU. This is what I was talking about. I love TTB as they were one of the first college lines I ever saw. My issue is that it seems as though they are among the last to update their material. As a result, I've considered them "meh." Not bad. Just "meh." Snares- 8. Not bad. All of the basics of a college line are there, so there's nothing negative to say. However, that's it. I can't think of anything noteworthy. Tenors- 9.0 VERY good. One of my favorite fenor lines. I just wish I could get a little more power. Some of the best visuals in the SWAC. Quints- 8.5 Nice way to add color to the snare parts. Basses- 8.0 Not enough for an 8.5 but not bad. Just very standard. Nice power. Now I'd like more intricate parts. Cymbals- 8.0- I'm torn because I like the visuals but I heard issue with the pocket. I believe in HBCU lines the cymbals have an important role in keeping the pocket. B Balance- 8.0 Pretty good. Again. I'd like more tenors but other than that not bad. Difficulty of material- 6.0 Here's where it gets dicey. And this is where I think the line is hurt. I'm hearing the same things that the line played in the 90s and things have evolved since then. Keep the history but you've got to have things for the new school. 55.5/70 FAMU- Snares- 8.5 Still some dirt but definitely variety that sets themselves above ASU's snares. I hate to say it because I love TTB...But Z 28 got them today. They're still old school with their approach but they have updated their material enough to shine above them. Tenors- 9.0 I give them a 9 for pocket. Quads- 8.0 Tbh Z's quads have been very underwhelming to me. I feel about them the same way I feel about ASU's snares: important but still kind of....there. Cymbals- 9.0 Within this battle FAMU's Cymbals shine. My only criticisms are 1.) Stay in your lane. That's why I like them. They don't try to be a line that they're not. So during M&S don't try to glide like other SWAC schools. Just stick to what you normally do. And 2.) The mistake at the end of Groove Theory. Basses- 9.5 In this battle, they totally shined. My only issue is the lack of attention to detail and this is honestly a gripe I have with the section. This is an opportunity to pull away and make NO doubt that you were the better section, but certain things like the drum flip during M&S wasn't very good. If everyone did it the same way it would have been great. Because they SOUNDED great. Nice tuning and the tonal-scotch combination set them apart. Balance- 9.5 This has always been a strength of this line to me and it really made itself distinguished in this battle. Difficulty of Material'- 8.0 As it relates to this battle it was "standard." 62/70 Final Score: ASU- 55.5/70 (79) FAMU- 62/70 (89) Winner: FAMU GREAT battle, but TTB I believe really can stand to do some renovation with their material. (Not style. Their style is totally fine.) FAMU pulled away with this one.
Maybe you should give it a second view. We only played two old school cadences because famu played 2 old ones. Everything else was new , created in the last 5 to seven years. Snares were clean and material was up to date. Thanks for your analysis though. All love
