      @@chrisbenna506 yuja Wang? You must be joking. She is just a speed freak, and even that she clearly cannot sustain due to the number of mistakes and missed notes. I never make a fuss about mistakes, but she clearly wants to show off her speed at the cost of dynamic range, musicality, tonal harmonics and generally clear playing. Hamelin is great, but Volodos is the best by far.

    A lot of these pieces are "taken out of context", of you will. Ppl r commenting how these are all just show off pieces when in actuality the uploader just showed the famously virtuosic sections. If we're gonna be real here, most of these pieces wouldn't even be in the top difficult piano pieces tbh

      anonymousQ45 you are right man, I'm a child... that's funny because in view of the comments on TH-cam, it seems they are a lot of kids obsessed with Cziffra...By the way I'm also obsessed with Michelangeli, Gould, Argerich, Richter, Sofronitski, Peterson, Tatum, Keith Jarrett, Evans etcIn fact you seem obsessed by virtuosity of pianists who like to show off rather than musicians who have something to say.

    • @mazeppa1231
      @mazeppa1231 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Abel Lifschutz Sorry, I seem to be bumping to you quite a lot today. :/ But it's ironic that you say that, whilst in the video, you see Volodos putting his own finale of Liszt's hungarian rhapsody no. 13. :/
      And besides, in the 1800's, it was expected that you do improvisations whilst performing certain pieces. Liszt did that all the time. Even Chopin changed his own endings in his nocturnes and nouvelle etudes. Alexander Dreyshock played Chopin's revolutionary etude in octave form. Liszt also played Chopin's etude op. 25 no. 2 in octave form. Cziffra was merely respecting that tradition, since most of the pieces he played derived from that era.
      So with all due respect, wouldn't it be great if some pianists like Cziffra and Volodos preserved that tradition and kept it alive despite having countless robotic pianists doing the same thing over and over again? No offense, but that's a very ignorant comment coming from you. :/

    Omgawd!!! I can't believe Grynuk's octaves ! The rest all of us amateurs can play just not as aesthetically, musically or tonally excellent as these artists. Tiempo is fabulous in Chopin prelude.Gibbons is always incredible in Alkan.Volodos has more than all of us put together . The true test is who can make 10 seconds of easy to play music a memory of a lifetime. volodis Schumann is n that category!!!

    I see everyone commenting on the absence of other great virtuosos like Cziffra, Argerich, etc. I think they're right, but there's one I never see mentioned: Richter. Have you checked his rendition of Chopin's etude in C # minor? It's ridiculous...

    • @thegreenpianist7683

      Yes Richter's performance of op10 no4 is ridiculous

    • @lambiable
      @lambiable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like very much Richter but I find his performance of op10 n4 too speed and not very musical, I prefer a lot the Aimi Kobayashi's interpretation of this etude
      (sorry for my english)

    • @lambiable
      @lambiable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know his performance, I like very much. I found it a little slow but very clear and musical.
      However I pesonally prefer Kobashi's performance for this etude, equally musical and controlled than Lisieki's performance but more passionate
      (je remets mon commentaire en français ce sera + clair si tu parles français) Je connaissais pas la performance de Jan Lisieki mais j'ai beaucoup aimé. Je la trouve un peu lente mais très claire et très musicale.
      Je préfère quand même l'interprétation de cette étude par Aimy Kobayashi, tout aussi musicale que celle de Lisieki mais + passionnée (ce qui correspond mieux au caractère fougueux de cette étude je trouve)

      toothless toe
      Not surprising to find you here :)
      I would recommend you give Cziffra another shot.
      To start, try the 5th transcendental etude by Liszt (fuex follets, however do you spell that?).
      While I have heard pianists that equal Cziffra or surpass him in technicality, his interpretation is the only one in which I could actually envision an enchanted scene unfold - this requires from the pianist careful attention to detail: dynamics, ballance and rubato are all utilized in a way that really evokes a picturesque scene fitting the title - You can really track the movement of fireflies and imagine a host of effects and scenery in this "story". Other pianists, of whom I consider Kissin to be the most articulate, might play it at a greater tempo and/or give a more clear tone to each note, but have failed to create a clear line of thought that I can follow - a "story" if you will.

    How do you play octaves that fast?! Your arm would be burning after you did all of that.

    De fato, a técnica é importantíssima. Entretanto, a música deve falar, acima de tudo, ao coração. O Grande Frederic Chopin já observava, em sua época, o exagero de certas apresentações, que enfatizavam mais as qualidades da pirotecnia do que a dinâmica da sensibilidade. Franz Liszt, certa vez, chegou a afirmar : " Até quando estarei condenado a esta atividade de picadeiro de circo, sem dar livre curso à sensibilidade ? ". Um tema para reflexão, também para os dias de hoje.

    Some of these excerpts make me want to put my hands in my pockets and never play again. I have a DMA in piano performance from a major conservatory, by the way. Virtuosity should never be exploited at the expense of the music, but to have the kind of technique that can do absolutely anything and perform the most difficult music without a struggle is a gift not given to everyone.

    This video proves to my satisfaction that virtuosiy can be overdone and does not produce memorable music.
    Just racing up and down the keyboard needs to be used sparingly not be the whole product.
    The memorable examples here for example are the less virtuosic ones
    Hungarian wotsit at the start and a bit of Chopin in the middle.
    Having said that it is amazing how high is the technical level of composition and playing that has been achieved.

    Nice attempt and idea - but a mixed bad of some outstanding and some ok performances in terms of virtuosity. Wunder and Ott are certainly not today's most dazzling pianists. Blechacz in the Chopin Scherzo? But sure, Volodos and Hamelin (though Kempf is more impressive in the Rachmaninoff 2nd Sonata).

    • @classicalalways
      @classicalalways 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I watched it and apparently you have not seen Volodos play Stars and Stripes Forever, Lugansky play the 12th Transcendental Etude (Ott is better looking, I get it - especially when she slows at the end to rest her fingers), or for that matter Weissenberg play Petrushka (but heaven forbid there be a historic performance that has withstood the test of time as one of the most dazzling videos ever made). And Zimerman's Chopin 2nd Ballade compared to Argerich's Scarlatti K141 that no one has ever equaled. For that matter, no Argerich, but yes Zimerman and Ott. I am sorry for being too pretentious, I just thought this was an attempt at the most virtuoso videos out there - and some are and som are not representative of that caliber of virtuosity.

      @classicalalways 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And if just Chopin and Liszt - Cziffra's Grand Galop Chromatique was not at Ott's level I gather, nor was Richter's Revolutionary Etude at the level of Zimerman's 2nd Ballade - of course in terms of virtuosity. Neither Cziffra nor Richter were known I guess as the type of vituosos that Ott and Zimerman are. If that is pretentious, I guess I am part of a large group. And I could go on - but substance today is not as important as aesthetics - color videos, good sound, and celebrity status.

      I think putting in the same sentence Ott and Zimerman is a bit odd. :) Being the latter not only an extraordinary virtuoso - just listen to his live rendition of Bacewicz's Sonata n. 2- but probably among the greatest musicians in the history of piano playing. *But* I understand what you are trying to say, I wouldn't put Zimerman (and Miss Ott too) in a compilation of "Virtuosity" either.

    I think the best is Arcady Volodos (because more over it's an improvisation), then Lisitsa, even if I like Zimerman when he plays Chopin.
    But the great one of virtuosity is Franz Liszt, of course. Like Pele in Football !!!
    But let's wait and see Volodos in 5 or 10 years. May be...
